- davidjunit, on 12/29/2008, -0/+30If DNF is ever released they should have some phony award on the box, something like, "PC Gamer's Top Vaporware 10 Years In A Row!"
- morningmatters, on 12/29/2008, -6/+23Here is the list:
10. Sony PlayStation Home
9. Myka
8. Hero's Journey
7. ZAP-X
6. Microvision Pico projector
5. Garmin nüvifone
4. Starcraft II
3. Android phones other than the T-Mobile G1
2. IE 8
1. Duke Nukum
This is a pretty weak list IMO. About half of the items list are actually "vaporware" which won't be out soon. - FirstDigg, on 12/29/2008, -7/+23From wikipedia: "Vaporware is a term used to describe a software or hardware product that is announced by a developer well in advance of release, but which then fails to emerge after having well exceeded the period of development time that was initially claimed or would normally be expected for the development cycle of a similar product. "
From story:
"StarCraft II has been in development since 2003, was teased and demoed throughout 2007, promised in 2008, and now it's been pushed back until at least 2009."
Seems like it fits the definition to me.. though 'well exceeded' is a little gray. True, not as bad as something in development for twelve years, which is why its not #1 :) - Murdats, on 12/29/2008, -5/+19nono, any semi-tablet form device is now an iphone knock off.
if it has a screen on the front then its an iphone knock off.
hell if it fits in your pocket and has a screen its an iphone knock off. - emudeath, on 12/29/2008, -2/+15They never said that it would be released in 2008, most sites put that up as an estimate.
- Darkyuubi, on 12/29/2008, -13/+24Why is....starcraft 2 on that list? And 4th place for god sakes.
The things is coming out ok? Its coming out this year. Give it a rest already. There is a difference between SC2 and Duke.... - thelastcivilian, on 12/29/2008, -0/+10The point is, they were all promised long ago. So until we actually see them... They wouldn't be the first projects to be scrapped after a long disappointing development phase.
- inactive, on 12/29/2008, -1/+10its coming out this year?
you mean within the next 2 days ? - GhostFreeman, on 12/29/2008, -0/+7Oh its coming out -- in three seperate games thanks to Bobby Kotpiece.
- jeremymccurdy, on 12/29/2008, -0/+7If Duke Nukem ever gets released, vaporware lists will actually have unpredictable winners.
- JoeCool1986, on 12/29/2008, -0/+6yeah, I bought my VooDoo 2 in preparation for Duke Nukem Forever. I think I made a mistake.
- petebot, on 12/29/2008, -0/+6No Alan Wake?
- roddack, on 12/29/2008, -1/+7you know blizzard never promised it would come out in 08 just most gaming sites announced 08 as the most likely year of release.
- GeekWithIssues, on 12/29/2008, -0/+6It is coming out in the next 365 days...but it is not coming out in 2008. I believe that's where the Wired crew was going this this one.
And besides, we've been promised stuff like this from Blizzard before. Remember Ghost?
Personally, I'll believe it when I hold it in my sweaty little hand. - strictnein, on 12/29/2008, -0/+6I wish I had a girlfriend, although I don't know if my wife would approve.
- kingofinternet, on 12/29/2008, -9/+15the g1 is much more than an "iphone knock off."
- inactive, on 12/29/2008, -0/+6Hail to the king, baby!
- gfnw, on 12/30/2008, -0/+5Blizzard never promised anything. The release date for all Blizzard games is always "when it's done".
- roebeet, on 12/29/2008, -0/+5Dugg for Duke Nukem Forever making the list, again!
- Jektal, on 12/29/2008, -4/+9If they're going to throw things like SC2 and Home on the list they should have Gran Turismo 5 too.
You'd think after admitting they were WRONG on a number of last year's entries that they'd try a bit harder this year to get actual Vaporware products, not just items which are lackluster (Home) or reasonably delayed (SC2). - Dentid4Hed, on 12/30/2008, -0/+5Seriously, Duke? Seriously. By now, if that game doesn't have time-traveling, chainsaw wielding strippers that come out of your monitor to give you all sorts of real-life pleasure while fighting zombies and ***** money, no one will want to play it.
DNKROZ - Elranzer, on 12/29/2008, -3/+8The iPhone "app ecosystem" only appeared because jailbreaking the iPhone 1.0 was so popular. If Apple had their way, the iPhone would (still) only run Apple apps and nothing else.
- MahirH, on 12/29/2008, -1/+6Blizzard never promises release dates. Ever. "It will be released when it's done."
- dtfinch, on 12/29/2008, -0/+4The 2003 lifetime achievement award kept it off the list in 2004, but DNF was back by popular demand in 2005.
- bookon, on 12/30/2008, -0/+4Can't Duke Nukem' be retired to a Vaporware Hall of Fame and JUST IGNORED until it comes out?
- okravetz, on 12/29/2008, -0/+4What exactly about that award is phony?
- thealsir, on 12/29/2008, -1/+5The meatspace version of vaporware: An actual girlfriend :(
- aserer511, on 12/29/2008, -0/+4i got the phantom for chanukah, it's great! it runs Duke Nukem Forever like a gem
- inactive, on 12/29/2008, -0/+4*****, if some amateurs started their own open source duke nukem game with a modern engine, it would reach completion before 3dlabs releases anything.
- ripter, on 12/29/2008, -0/+4I thought Duke Nukem Forever already won the lifetime vaporware award, why is it still on the list?
- Verble, on 12/29/2008, -1/+5Comparing SC:2 to Ghost is like comparing DNF to... well any game that's actually come out.
- MtheoryX, on 12/30/2008, -0/+3dugg for "knocked-up in shop class"
- peaceninja, on 12/29/2008, -4/+7maybe if other companies were a bit quicker, then we would be calling the iPhone a "G1 knock off". Give credit when credit is due.
- demoneye, on 12/29/2008, -0/+3Starcraft 2 is different. Even if they've pushed the release dates back, they're still actively working on it and making sure we know that it will be released.
I played the build they had at PAX and I refuse to call that ***** Vaporware. it's coming along great. - inactive, on 12/29/2008, -1/+4read the freaking article
- Ratatosk, on 12/30/2008, -0/+3nobody other than HTC has promised an android hanset this year... what's vapourware about it?
- Remelox, on 12/29/2008, -0/+3I don't really see this as a vaporware list but a delay list with a couple exceptions. There are plenty of hypred products that were cancelled this year. They should have used more of those and less that are known to be in production.
- gerrylazlo, on 12/29/2008, -0/+3They mention checking out the DNF FAQ in the comments. Comedy gold! On one of the questions it says that DVD formated games aren't mainstream in gaming yet. Hoo hoo.
- hackiavelli, on 12/29/2008, -0/+3I know at least one fan project tried to do a Duke Nukem 3D total conversion using one of the Quake engines. It looked like they were making good progress too before the lawyers were sicked on 'em.
Sadly it might be too late for old Duke even if Duke Nukem Forever gets done. The gaming environment has changed so much in the last 12 years that the things that made DN3D great will probably be stripped out to get a better ESRB rating or avoid controversy. - dtfinch, on 12/29/2008, -0/+3I've been holding off buying a good video card until DNF comes out.
- AmazingSteve, on 12/29/2008, -0/+3"Just wait until Home!!!"
Bwaaaahahahahahahahahaha! Sony is quickly running out of "just wait until..." Probably why GT5 isn't out for another year. FAIL, FAIL, FAIL... - inactive, on 12/30/2008, -0/+2By omitting a headphone jack entirely, the G1 has actually topped the first-gen iPhone's headphone-jack blunder.
So, "knockoff" is hardly appropriate. - CoD4, on 12/29/2008, -3/+5I haven't even tried out psn home yet cause everyone's been trashing it so much, way to go sony
- JoelJ, on 12/30/2008, -0/+2No one cares about DNF anymore.
- TMTurtle, on 12/29/2008, -1/+3Blizzard was not developing Ghost. Ghost was not going to be a game on their platform of choice. To compare the two is ridiculous.
- Topher06, on 12/29/2008, -0/+2I agree, and it IS a beta, regardless if Sony is using that as an excuse. I would like Home to improve greatly in the next few months if its going to ever succeed but I can't bitch about Home's problems until its out of beta and the people at Wired should appreciate that Sony went full open beta in spite of its lack of content and problems. So far Sony has been very aimiable in improving the PS3 experience based on user feedback, everything from its media support. XMB features and I am sure now Home has been and will be improved based on how open Sony has been with the PS3 community. If you bitch, Sony listen's, which is obviously not the case with Nintendo or Microsoft.
- Topher06, on 12/29/2008, -1/+3Do you always let other people think for you?
- giid, on 12/29/2008, -1/+3Yeah, not sure why IE8 is on there. IE7 took quite a while to come out after the first beta, why would people think IE8 is any different?
- Kugelblitze, on 12/29/2008, -0/+2TTFN?
