- wattznext, on 10/10/2007, -1/+27I'm a huge fan of utorrent. Dont know why but when i switched from regular bittorrent to utorrent, my average down speed jumped to 3x what it weas before. Long live utorrent
- lordtyros, on 10/10/2007, -2/+23More evidence that uTorrent is the *****.
- metalica77, on 10/10/2007, -1/+22Completely forgot about labeling torrents. Thx
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15Oh man, thanks for the morning laugh. uTorrent is a waste of bandwidth...CLASSIC!
- batmant, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13i like my porn unorganized, thank you.
- raitchison, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11It's extremely unlikely to ever happen. As I understand it uTorrent runs extremely optimized code specifically written for Windows which is why it's so small and fast. In order to make a Liniux (or Mac) version you would need to completely re-write it from scratch, and you'd need someone who was extremely proficient at coding for Linux (or Mac) to make one that works halfway close to the same way as the Windows version.
Also a problem with the Linux issue (not so much for the Mac) is that it's closed source. - tavisjohn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Encryption
- DWatch, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Don't be an idiot. uTorrent 1.7.x does not 'call home', and no one can show any sniffer logs to prove it. What everyone freaked out over was the inclusion of 'peer discovery', a way to find peers on the local LAN, and uses an IP that is non-routable, which means the IP address it was talking to cannot make it through your router and your ISP will ignore it if you have no router. People should really learn how IP addresses and subnetting works before they start flinging wild accusations. Anyone who wants your IP can get it by joining a torrent swarm, with _any_ client, so why would this client need to 'call home'? Those that rely on peer guardian are just fooling themselves, its only as good as the list it uses to block with, and the list lags by about 5 to 6 months over the ever-changing IP base used by the 'bad guys', making the app almost useless.
Just turn off 'peer discovery' and dial down your paranoia. - Foenetik, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10all my downloads stay in one folder until I either decide to keep them,in which case I'll move them accordingly, or they get deleted. this seems like a waste of time to me.
- Noctem, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8No it doesn't. Not a single person has come forward with actual evidence proving this.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7μ, Dammit.
- raitchison, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Well I should have written that I don't _trust_ uTorrent since their acquisition.
I use 1.6 since that is the last version released before the acquisition, no 1.6.1 or any future versions for me, just like for a long time I stuck with Winamp 2.x after Nullsoft got bought by AOL. - Crazysah, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8I noticed that before but never got around to using it.
Labelling here I come! - pigfister, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8only take build 1.6 as the media companies purchased uTorrent and there is a lot of talk of uTorrent connecting to known ip ranges of mgm, riaa and sony bgm.
- billyoneal, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9Maybe I'll look when it gets off Java.
- Noctem, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7uTorrent works in WINE.
- subliminalurge, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I noticed it, but never took the time to look at it closely enough to realize it's actually useful. I'll definitely be putting this to use now.
- billyoneal, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Yes, lets pay for something that we can get for free!
- SysstemLord, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4thank you
- siggyfawn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Not new features, but they will be new to some people. Good link.
dugg. - Snakedal337, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4as I understand, your more likely to get hit by a bolt of lightning than a threat from the RIAA... But that risk is high enough for most.
- mmcgrath, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Use it to download Fedora 8 Test 1 (released today)
http://torrent.fedoraproject.org/ - techsmack, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7Don't upgrade your utorrent past 1.6.1, if you have roll back, I'm sure you can find the 1.6.1 out there still.
As it is being banned from some places - their reason:
uTorrent 1.7, NO other torrents going other then 1 linux iso torrent, no other applications running (actually running in wine), separate dedicated IP = Mediasentry IP hits 36.
Halite, same torrent, same system = 0 Media sentry IP hits.
Every version newer than 1.6.1 is Bittorrent Inc., which is directly in partnership with the movie studios. Viacom Inc.'s Paramount Pictures, News Corp.'s 20th Century Fox, Lionsgate, Palm Pictures and Kadokawa Pictures USA etc etc .
In fact versions > 1.7 don't even have the same developer doing it. It's all handled now by Bittorrent Inc's development. The original author (up to 1.6.1) is no longer even part of the project. - thatbox, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I'd be interested in reading more about that test, do you have a link?
- EnjoyFailure, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Azureus really needs to expand its folder organization functionality. Automating RSS torrent feeds is still the ***** though.
- Phillbo88, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3µTorrent is awesomeness in a program.
- crimsonnblue, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4You're an idiot. Winamp is still great after the purchase.
- pigfister, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5only use uTorrent 1.6 as there is a lot of ppl noting that the latest ver of uTorrent connects to ip ranges from mgm, sony bgm and the riaa since it was sold off.
http://www.slyck.com/news.php?story=1117 - gmillerd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Not only does it work in Wine. But its wine optimized to say the least.
- schoate09, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Scared/mad that you may get caught. Unfortunately, he's telling the truth. There's no excuse for an iso download of a linux distribution to connect to IPs from mediasentry. The tops is when used under a different torrent client, it doesn't happen. For all we know, the RIAA/MPAA could be planning on gathering loads of IPs, and launching a large attack against many, many torrent users.
- bliz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I hope that a plugin for azureus to move files according to their labels will be made soon.
- tavisjohn, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I already sort my Torrents. The ones that are currently downloading goes into one folder. When they are finished they are moved to another folder, and the torrents I start go into a 3rd folder!
When a torrent finishes I then sort it based on what it is, then burn it to CD/DVD for safe keeping. Then it get's sorted in my CD Wallets.
Why do you have to keep them sorted DURING the download process? Oh I know why! This article is for all those OCD people out there! (Monk) - SysstemLord, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1do you want speed? try flashget
- markdr123, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2I do the same really - if I download a movie I'll move it into My Videos, etc.
- Noctem, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Too bad there's exactly zero hard evidence proving that the new uTorrent team is doing something shady. Time and again in the uT forums, the mods/devs have asked for WireShark logs proving some sort of communication, and _nobody_ can provide it.
- rsabin, on 11/04/2007, -1/+1Use Peerguardian.
But that RIAA/MPAA story is FUD! - raitchison, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I'm sure there isn't any proof, in fact I'm sure that there isn't any nefarious back-end communications going on at present, but that doesn't mean that future versions might or even that 1.6.1 might have some hidden code set to activate at a future date or based on some unknown trigger.
Regardless of security issues, there's the issue that I don't want to support a company (with money or even with simple patronage) that takes money from an organization that has been and continues to fight to take away MY rights to do what I want with the media I purchase. - LethaLImpuLse, on 10/10/2007, -5/+4Yeah, you're full of *****
- ebswift, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0And bittornado too.
- PueSi, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Pure scaremongering *****.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1seriously, WTF DOESNT KNOW ABOUT μtorrent? why is this on the front page?
oh yeah 1.7 blows, dont use it - Sigurdhsson, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0Same here. Although most of mine are RARed so I unpack them into the correct folder, seed them for a while then delete them.
- Hazydew, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0OPEN YOUR EYES
- mal1964, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1Post-its, work great or what ever kind of tape you have around the house.
- Hazydew, on 10/10/2007, -3/+0FNORD
- coit, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1So, how do you people use bittorrent without getting RIAA/MPAA in your *****? Not live the U.S. or something?
- McTendo, on 10/10/2007, -7/+3blocked.
- netengineer10, on 10/10/2007, -6/+1When are they going to make a linux client? Other than ktorrent, all other linux clients are buggy.
- crimsonnblue, on 10/10/2007, -7/+2pfft... torrents. You silly ppl. usenet ftw!
