- BinaryDelt, on 01/10/2008, -10/+173To add insult to injury, I heard that Betamax, Minidisc, and UMD didn't invite HD-DVD to their retired formats pool party.
- r1y23, on 01/10/2008, -6/+67FINISH HIM!!!!
- EDmAN, on 01/10/2008, -11/+70I just wish Universal and Paramount would make an announcement so that we can wrap this up and call it a victory for blu-ray. I realize they will probably hold off on this until next month though. I didn't expect HD-DVD to go down this fast, but I did expect it to go down this year. Who still thinks it was a waste for Sony to put blu-ray in the PS3? It seems like it won the format war for them. I wouldn't have ever considered having a HD-player if it weren't for the PS3. By the way, there are a lot of people who use the PS3 as a blu-ray player also...
- Sniper, on 01/10/2008, -4/+47HBO has also gone Blu
- NeoCortex, on 01/10/2008, -0/+30Formatality!
- minorthreat, on 01/10/2008, -16/+43I just sold my new 360 on ebay and got a PS3. I am a casual gamer, but the leading decision was that I wanted a High-Def player also. Not to mention built in wifi, linux installation, recharagable controllers, no pay to play online and over all faster machine. Sorry for turning this into a fanboy post, but one machine clearly beats the other.
- superkendall, on 01/10/2008, -1/+26There was simply no way Paramount and Universal could stay in a format with only 20% of the content to be had. People simply are not going to buy into that, nor are they going to want to have two players, nor are retailers going to want to stock two separate formats and have to take resulting returns from confused customers for hardware and media. The switch was always inevitable after Warner switched, it would be good to get this over with soon.
- cubanDUB, on 01/10/2008, -3/+28excellent.now i can get Fast Times At Ridgemont High on blu ray and watch phoebe cates ***** in blu ray glory
- Heaiser, on 01/10/2008, -2/+26Strange, I have an Xbox but don't have the HD-DVD attachment. All the games still work fine... is there a reason that the failure of HD-DVD should upset me?
- eryximachus, on 01/10/2008, -0/+23Yeah, DAT tapes and audio CDs were such dismal failures.
Yawn. - eryximachus, on 01/10/2008, -2/+25Can you play Nintendo DS cartridges on another systems?
- Incidents, on 01/10/2008, -14/+36I don't think UMD counts because the PSP is still selling very well, and is the only recent handheld to ever steal so much market share from an industry that Nintendo had traditionally dominated for so long. It's not like you can play UMDs on other formats besides the PSP.
- thatsmyaibo, on 01/10/2008, -0/+19Don't forget, MD was huge in Europe and Japan. Just because it failed in the States doesn't mean it was a failure. It was just competing with hard drive based media players.
- Muncher, on 01/10/2008, -2/+21Are they supposed to be offended by being called zombies? That's freaking awesome!
- tarmithius, on 01/10/2008, -0/+17To say that MD was huge in Japan is a huge understatement. The market for MDs was gigantic and it was not just in Japan. You can could most of Asia in that equation too.
- sofaKing812, on 01/10/2008, -6/+23This makes it hard to pick if I should get a 360 or PS3. I am much more interested in the games available on the 360, but passing up a blu-ray player AND new system that will have some great games released in the years to come is tough.*
*This is not an open call for fanboys to start yelling which system is better or has the games I should play. - dante2010xxx, on 01/10/2008, -1/+16I'm glad you reassured your wife of all this stuff. I was up late last night worrying how she would take the news. I'm sure she feels jilted but she'll get over it.
- eryximachus, on 01/10/2008, -1/+15It hasn't failed. It's still a major format amongst recording studios and is slowly but surely replacing DAT tapes, another very successful Sony format.
- tr0tsky, on 01/10/2008, -1/+15main reason I got my PS3 (after the price drop last summer) was as a blu-ray player. There are good games starting to come out, but it was primarily a mediabox for me when I got it.
- eryximachus, on 01/10/2008, -4/+17I don't think anyone who has an HDTV holds that view. No one I know does.
- kingmanic, on 01/10/2008, -3/+16point to the mainstream HD DVD that wasn't DRM'd.
- inactive, on 01/10/2008, -0/+13Woah, you're not making out that he's some sort of hypocrite are you!?
- TjLAXattack, on 01/10/2008, -1/+14Why would you want to play a 1080p high definition movie on your cell phone?
- SkippyDoorknob, on 01/10/2008, -0/+13I prefer wax cylinders. They have a warmer sound.
- mooninite, on 01/10/2008, -8/+21GTA4 (yes I know its Xbox also), GT5, PS3 Home, and more are coming out this year. Plus Warhawk is an excellent game.
The PS3 is offering quality over quantity in games. Isn't that what you backwards-baseball-cap-wearing kids want? - kingmanic, on 01/10/2008, -0/+13Sony actually didn't stop producing Beta content until 2002. Betacam is the television industry standard for broadcast, it's onyl recently being replaced by digital media.
- WhereAmI, on 01/10/2008, -0/+12Blu-Ray won.
- mywhitenoise, on 01/10/2008, -0/+12"XBL has started streaming HD content"
***** paying $8 to have a digital copy for 2 days. - joser916, on 01/10/2008, -5/+17as long as my 8 track works im fine so dose any one know of any new snoop dogg album that will be relesed for my 8 track any time soon?
- chris4404, on 01/10/2008, -7/+19I'm going to miss the fact HD DVD is region free.
- peep, on 01/10/2008, -3/+14Sony learned their lessons and bought the studios and retail out before the consumers actually even entered the fray of the "war"
- catalysis, on 01/10/2008, -0/+11The irony is that microsoft is most likely going to have a blu-ray drive in their next console.
- jeremy1967, on 01/10/2008, -3/+14"Why bundle a possibly defunct movie format into what is supposed to be a game system?"
Um, because it still has value in a gaming system? Why use cartridges in a game console if that cartridge can't be used for anything else? - Sniper, on 01/10/2008, -0/+11You can't copyright the word blue :|
- johnnyutah001, on 01/10/2008, -5/+15 bluray is owned by a consortium of companies not just SONY - douche
- czimmerman, on 01/10/2008, -1/+11I'm going to just pretend that you don't understand that Blu-ray is uhm...how should I say it nicely...meant to be played on a HDTV. You would only see the littlest, if any, difference on a SDTV. In fact, I know the BD-P1000 (Samsung's first standalone player) would not even let you watch Blu-ray discs on a SDTV.
- kewldewd, on 01/10/2008, -1/+11Sucks to be you. I bought a PS3 so I can play both
- thatsmyaibo, on 01/10/2008, -0/+10Blu Ray wins...Fatality...
- cbrunet, on 01/10/2008, -5/+15Poor HD-DVD, the bells tolls for thee.
- logicalnoise, on 01/10/2008, -1/+10it's among the best selling HD-DVDs so I'll take your words as a lie.
- ScarHawk, on 01/10/2008, -2/+11Yeah, like Universal and Paramount are going to foot the bill for a format war. They owe nobody anything- just because you bought to early doesn't mean their douchebags.
- diggrim, on 01/10/2008, -0/+9shhh, he's trying to sound tech-cool, don't burst his bubble
- Incidents, on 01/10/2008, -3/+12LOL what? Blu-ray players can play CDs AND DVDs. It's not like you have to rebuy them.
Either way, you could always rip them on to your computer... - Protoss, on 01/10/2008, -0/+9Cell phone?
- inactive, on 01/10/2008, -4/+13lol, HD-DVD is *****.
- AshamedAmerican, on 01/10/2008, -3/+11Especially since they have probably the best zombie game of all time, Dead Rising.
- tendonut, on 01/10/2008, -0/+8As was it for most people who bought a PS3. This will finally justify me getting one myself.
- r1y23, on 01/10/2008, -2/+10I am perfectly happy with my 360 and normal DVD player right now. Really I think it comes down to personal preference but I must admit the PS3 does have a lot of potential for the future. I almost got the HD DVD add on, but I am glad I held off on that.
- inactive, on 01/10/2008, -1/+9Yeah, because when one division of Time Warner wants to shift public opinion, they get their parent company's parent company to post in its other subsidiary's subsidiary's blog.
