- MiddleOfNowhere, on 02/27/2008, -1/+27OMFG! Hijacking in Cyberspace! Stop the press!
FTA:
- Cyber-warfare!
- A "new front" in an ongoing campaign!
- Using searches for M&S on Google to divert users to the union's list of grievances!
And all this chaos, destruction and online anarchy for a measly 500 GBP!
So, what are they actually doing, those nasty hacker-unionists?
Buying ***** ads, that's what they are doing.
Buried as the most sensationalist, idiotic BS I've ever seen on the digg front page. - Jenadae, on 02/27/2008, -1/+19People seem to care about M&S just about as much as anal fisting. Dont believe me?
http://www.google.com/trends?q=M%26S%2C+anal+fisti ... - smurf22, on 02/27/2008, -0/+17Buried as inaccurate sensationalism.
- inactive, on 02/27/2008, -2/+18Yeah, pissing off skynet is a good thing to do.
- ceruleanocte, on 02/27/2008, -0/+15what if they search for S&M??
- REBELinBLUE, on 02/27/2008, -0/+11"This isn't just food, this is pretentiously overpriced food."
;) OK so I admit I got my lunch from M&S today and probably will do more often as they opened an M&S simply food on the floor below the office at 10am this morning (we've been waiting for it since we moved here in September 2006). There was someone protesting outside, but I think that was more to do with the company managing the complex rather than the M&S store opening. - glock22ownr, on 02/27/2008, -0/+9Erm... are they talking blackhat SEO ... Google bot stops spidering their site in 5... 4 ... 3... 2 ... 1.... Then again they could just be buying sponsored ads ... which would make this story lame ...
- NathanielJ, on 02/27/2008, -1/+10So how are they planning on pulling this off? The article was extremely vague, and makes no mention of whether they are Google bombing, buying AdSense space (unlikely given the reported budget) or anything else.
Whatever it is though, it doesn't seem to be working, and makes the union folk sound like a bunch of douches for trying to mess with Google search results. - Eivo, on 02/27/2008, -0/+9Marks & Spencer?
- Anonymous3, on 02/27/2008, -0/+7It points to untietheunion.org.uk instead.
- SpaceMonkeyZero, on 02/27/2008, -0/+6And yet because of the UAW there's much less workers in America making less low quality American cars... They're shooting themselves in the foot.
I'm all for unions protecting workers from dangerous working conditions. But union bosses are more interested in money and protecting their cronies than enabling the company to improve and actually, HIRE more people. - asurroca, on 02/27/2008, -0/+6Translation: I'm in your Googles buying your ads
- MrViklund, on 02/27/2008, -0/+5Publicity stunt of the week...
- joshhan, on 02/27/2008, -2/+7Honestly, I think countries need to revisit the role of the labor union in today's day and age.
- inactive, on 02/27/2008, -0/+4If you RTFA you can see that this is just a sensationalist headline about a union buying a Google Ad. That's all there is to this. A union is spending money on a legitimate advertising forum to have an ad listing their issues come up when people search for a specific company name.
That's ALL there is to this.
The submitter is either a Union employee trying to drum up traffic, or a moron with no comprehension of what "adwords" are. - orangefly, on 02/27/2008, -0/+4no
- frooo, on 02/27/2008, -0/+4I typed in M&S and the Marks & Spencer derivatives into Google to see whats up... and you know what I saw?
Nothing.
Lame sensationalist crap...
I'm thinking about putting up some S&M ads into google's paid search results for the term M&S right now... free advertising for Sax paid for by me. - Spuy767, on 02/27/2008, -0/+3It seems there was a sharp drop in interest in M&S as soon as the Anal Fisting Phenomena caught on.
- ibjp, on 02/27/2008, -0/+3Google makes a lot of money from people hijacking their search engine. It's called advertising. Holly crap thats a bad headline.
- CondiRice, on 02/27/2008, -0/+3Unsurprisingly, anal fisting is far more popular than M&S in the US, Germany and France. It's a close run thing in the Netherlands though!
- orangefly, on 02/27/2008, -0/+3and no
- thailand1972, on 02/27/2008, -1/+4Exactly my thoughts. The article just assumes they'll get top spot in rankings for "M&S" and only for an exact timeframe too. This isn't how search engines work. Unless they mean they're buying up Google Ads, but then the 500GBP they mentioned wouldn't last very long.
- anillop, on 02/27/2008, -0/+2Most unions are useless and now only serve to hasten the demise of their own jobs.
- expatcatalyst, on 02/27/2008, -0/+2No kidding!
- MtheoryX, on 02/27/2008, -0/+2With unions, you're only getting one guarantee: Dues will be paid.
- JayKeaton, on 02/27/2008, -0/+2M&S tried to charge me 6 quid for a prepackaged off the shelf sandwich once. As far as I'm concerned the crooks at M&S deserve all they get.
- Jenadae, on 02/27/2008, -1/+3HAH! Cookies on dowels...
- jasonhdavis, on 02/27/2008, -0/+2The headline is really misleading, however, I dugg it because it exemplifies a company's need to be ethical in all aspects of their business. It's so inexpensive and easy to expose bad corporate behavior.
M&S' response is denial. Wonder who's telling the truth. - danieldantastic, on 02/27/2008, -1/+3They're a British department store chain. Their pre-made sandwiches are pretty tasty even though they look like gas station food.
- sq2shooter, on 02/27/2008, -1/+3Don't forget to thank the UAW for blackmailing their employer into financial ruin. Unions in the end, ship jobs overseas.
- SuckMyDigg, on 02/27/2008, -0/+2Cyber warfare? Lets cut the ***** with the 'war' buzzwords. Getting a bunch of people to search for a term is NOT warfare.
- expatcatalyst, on 02/27/2008, -0/+2Quite frankly Union, we don't really care and what your doing is really lame.....warfare by convincing a bunch to search? Unions sound as sad as ever. Take peoples money with big promises, then don't deliver....hmmmmm sound exactly like politicians.
- dungar, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1the internets has stop working?
- employeeno5, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1This is a great article but I found the Digg headline misleading.
- BuzzLightyear, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1“cyber-warfare”
Isn't Dr Who the specialist at that? - frooo, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1Done, ads are up - pointing at digg though :)
- Jerimee, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1"The most sensationalist, idiotic BS I've ever seen on the digg front page."
Seconded! - sharpie45, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1Most misleading headline and overhyped press release, ever. They're just planning on buying Adwords ads. However, doesn't even look like its working. I'm not showing any ads (but they could only be targeting the U.K.)
I support Unions and all, but sensationalist coverage that turns out to be nothing won't get them anywhere. - fotbr, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1The article said they bought an ad.
- inactive, on 02/27/2008, -2/+3Unions are so obsolete. There really is no need to drive prices up by paying people inflated wages for doing menial work.
- dman24752, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1BOLSHEVISM! SHEER BOLSHEVISM!
- inactive, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1buried for inaccuracy. Epic fail on the part of the union.
- Trucoto, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1Union (hi)jack.
- portos12, on 06/24/2008, -0/+1What?
