- wwnexc, on 11/01/2007, -3/+54IMAP would be a great additional feature.
- iofthestorm, on 10/10/2007, -2/+47FTA: The new features, or at least the phrases translated, were related to Google Gears support (yay offline gmail) and viewing account activity, useful if you think someone else was using your account.
- djspike, on 11/01/2007, -1/+21Free IMAP would be pretty sweet.
- bigfkncee, on 10/10/2007, -3/+22Maybe it'll finally come out of Beta
- Louisd11, on 10/10/2007, -0/+17How bout a feature where you can block senders ... from even your SPAM box, in one click?
- TimmyGUNZ, on 10/10/2007, -3/+19IMAP and Push to iPhone < /Dreaming>
- buggyg, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13imap/mobile push please!
- ColinCampbell, on 11/01/2007, -0/+12Agreed wholeheartedly. If I get another email from Bank of America saying my account has been hacked when I don't even have an account there, I'm going to kill someone.
- dbarefoot, on 10/10/2007, -18/+28Sweet, translation. I can finally figure out what all these emails from Russian brides are about.
- NicP, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9I think you mean "couldn't care less"
- jigga, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9I'm not so sure of that. Now that they offer paid storage options, its possible that they can include IMAP as well
I would like better iPhone support. Having to download my sent and old emails is a real pain - Labar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9then it's a good enough reason to phase out those hotmail accounts you have.
- JDHarper, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9If you only use one computer, POP3 is good enough. But if you use multiple computers, IMAP is indispensable. IMAP would keeps your emails on Google's servers, meaning that replies, downloaded messages, etc., would be the same no matter what computer you're using..
- duffsstuff, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8So excited!! I want some new functionality. It has been over due for Google. Hope it doesn't slow down like when yahoo did their big update.
- Tenlow, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9I was wondering, dont they need to make it all the way to 1.0 before they can go to 2.0? Maybe google just likes to roll that way.
- rockmanac, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Um... I use POP3, don't ever need to log in. What's the difference between that an IMAP?
-A - htiawe, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Unlimited filters, please.
- beuke, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6How about being able to organize contacts by last name?
- JrGhoull, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6while totally pointless, i hope they give it a new look. i always love it when sites i visit often give their sites a whole new look, even if it doesn't actually do anything...
- essjay, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Er, so they could be released either before OR after the Gmail 2.0 release? That doesn't really narrow it down much.
- etandrib, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4IMAP would be great. POP3 on the iPhone is a pain. Having to manually sync and delete between mobile and online versions just sucks. IMAP FTW. I could care less about the other features. Just give me IMAP.
- haylcron, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Well, for one, I can not have my entire home screen filled with every email I've ever received. Tags feel clumsy to me. Tags, to me, feel like a company being different for the sake of being different, not b/c it's better.
- rathofbuns, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Top on my wish list is IMAP. I'd also love to be able to sort my e-mail by size and drag-and-drop attachments.
- staffrocket, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Don't worry gmails working on IMAP as they previously stated... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBGIQ7ZuuiU
- Tenoq, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I'd pay for IMAP, I want it that bad. Why have 2GB of storage without providing the best method of managing your e-mail (IMAP)?
- wilhel1812, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4after gears, people have no reasons to chose outlook over gmail
- n00b3, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3how about rich text format for email signature? and maybe the ability to use image also?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4They will never do IMAP. Google gets revenue from the ads that are subtly shown alongside emails in Gmail, and IMAP eliminates the need to use the web interface. POP3 is provided, but it's slow and awkward compared to quickly logging in to check mail or browsing to it on your mobile phone.
- jigga, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4I second that motion
- reubencm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2exciting.... but not THAT great really...
- cbulock, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2There are filters that can auto apply labels based on a few different criteria including sender. It could be more robust and allowing filtering by certain headers though.
- ntdaley, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Translation isn't one of the features he was talking about.
The screenshots he showed were part of the tool Google uses to let people help translate Google's user interfaces.
The text strings shown in the translation tool is what the article author has based his predictions on. - armbar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I use both on a daily basis, and there's definitely something nice about Outlook's ability to drag and drop into a label, or to switch over to the calendar without waiting for an hour to load it. It's not that there's anything particularly bad about gmail, it's the little things that get to you like when it auto-selects a label instead of the one you wanted, or multiple email windows (i know it's possible, but the window they use blows), formatted table pasting, and logins randomly not saving or working.
Granted, Outlook has its share of problems, but most of mine are network-related, rather than UI or capability related like in Gmail.
Hopefully they'll fix some of that stuff in addition to adding new features. - zipzipzipz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2that is going to make things so much more complicated
- tdous, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2ARGH! Garett Rogers face staring at me made me forget there was an article.
..then the Blue Oyster Club music from Police Academy started... - dep01, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Boring features. I hope for something a bit more substantial, like an improved, faster interface, drag and drop, better contacts management, integrated keyboard shortcuts (instead of having to use Greasemonkey)..
They don't have to get rid of the "labels" system. I kinda like it. But they could be more intuitive by making it folderesque like Google Docs and Spreadsheets is now.... - kaplanfx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1And, when you read a new message on your iPhone, gmail still marks it as unread. IMAP would solve that as well I believe.
- thripper, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I knew they were working on smth the moment my gmail mobile app stopped displaying pictures right in the middle of the frinkin exam. Passionate hate , that was.
- Vinvin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It's already way too slow IMO, I hope the speed really improves with the new interface.
- n00b3, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2i hate tags/lables they just don't feel the same as folders.
- subtle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yeah, he's pretty freaking scary. No one ever asks him to prove his geek credentials.
- Vician, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1GMail has had integrated keyboard shortcuts for a very long time. They are not as extensive as the Greasemonkey scripts, but for general use they work just fine.
- Karmavs, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1That's what the 'Gmail 2.0' they're talking about.
- ttamshadbolt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Don't forget calendar integration...
- cbulock, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1That's why they have an Archive button.
- df12, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Making filters that Auto-archive and Label works Marvelously. The only difference between this and traditional folders is you don't have sub-folders, but you can apply more than one label to a messages which is close. Examples:
Matches: from:(admin@fedoraforum.org)
Do this: Skip Inbox, Apply label "Fedora"
Matches: to:(linux-lvm@redhat.com)
Do this: Skip Inbox, Apply label "Linux LVM" - frankilus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1These features are just a small taste of what's to come. GMAIL has yet tapped into its potential. Nevertheless, can't wait for the new updates.
- neckaros, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1IMAP is the only feature i need.
- 12340987, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I like gmail fine the way it is. I hope it isn't ruined in some way.
- tdous, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Yeah, tags sound so much more "web 2.0" (*vomits*) than folders. But folders work, and always have.
