- Specks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16For those who like The Simpsons. This is the nuclear power plant that Matt Groening based the Springfield nuclear plant on that Homer works at.
- enigmattic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Posting this version of it higher up for people to actually see:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ImzanXzAU2o - Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Instead of imploding nuclear power plants, we should be building more of them.

so uh... how'd those guys take this video? - Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10The submitter said IMPLODED. If it was a meltdown, surely something would have EXPLODED.
I think the title is just fine. - pintong, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Some of the videos required registration. I hosted them on my server to avoid taking out the local news and to make it easier for everyone to see. If you don't like it, that's fine. Here you are, if you rather:

And here's the Kingdome going down! Personally I think it's cooler, cause I'm from Seattle.
http://www.controlled-demolition.com/images/client/kingdome.mpg - daRoach, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I heard that this was going to happen, and I wanted to go check it out, but they had I-5 closed down on the way to the plant so nobody got to see anything. Just on TV. What a gyp.
- juanbobo808, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Nobody could watch it in real life, they wouldn't allow it. The only way you could've seen it was on TV. They've been broadcasting about it all week, doing some special reporting on it and the like.
- sawtooth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6The reason why it was decomisioned-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trojan_Nuclear_Power_Plant
The Trojan steam generators were designed to last the life of the plant, but it was only four years before trouble was first detected, as premature cracking of the steam tubes. In 1992, rupture of a steam tube finally closed the plant, and it was announced that replacement of the steam generators would be necessary before it could restart.
...
In 1992, PGE spent over $5 million to defeat a statewide ballot measure to close Trojan in what is still the most expensive ballot measure campaign in Oregon history. Then, within a week, the Trojan plant suffered yet another steam generator tube leak of radioactive water and was shut down. In December 1992, documents leaked from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, showing that staff scientists believed that Trojan may be unsafe to operate. In January 1993, PGE announced it would not try to restart Trojan.
We were told here in Oregon thre was threat to the whole pacific northwest should radioactive elements ever contaminate outside the reactor. Think about it Columbia River ---> Pacific Ocean. - antdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5More (another view): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5Irh6wJ_i4
- orijimi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I fell asleep watching SNL last night and woke up when the news achor on KGW said there was less than a minute and a half left before it was going to go off, and watched it go down, and I didn't even know when it was going to be on TV, it was kinda perfect. :D
- SeanMoney, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"Trojan Implosion" - gets my digg for that alone.
- Mac2492, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Because implosions are cool?
- pintong, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7They say this was particularly tricky because it had been built twice as thick due to the area being a high in seismic activity. Still a job well done :)
Just in case you missed it, here's a mini-interview with Mark Loizeaux of Controlled Demolition, Inc:
http://hansv.com/trojan_implosion/KATUInterview.html - scruffmaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Nice...did anyone else notice that the tower falling over to one side was done on purpose? They seem to have explosions on only one side in the middle...
- pintong, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Thanks, enigmattic :)
- albel65, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I was really expecting a righteous beam of energy to emerge from the rubble...
- doubleYou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@Chuck - it's all faked and done in CG. The same people who did the Moon landings were commissioned to do this. That's why the public was not allowed at the site.
- carve, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Those cooling towers aren't exactly easy to build. Sure- the plant has been shut down for years, but we have ever increasing energy demands. They should've left it standing, and then 10 years down the road they could've more easily but in a safe, modern reactor.
(btw- the title seemed fine to me) - Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Perhaps, but the nice thing about Youtube is that it frigging works.
- pintong, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Actually, this *was* submitted yesterday ;)
- ProphetSix, on 10/12/2007, -9/+12Title's just a TAD misleading.
It was a controlled demolition of a closed plant. NOT a nuclear meltdown. - allenu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Hmm, looks like an inside job to me... oh wait--it was!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6They should've just overloaded that darn reactor instead. Would've been a hell of a lot cooler, except for the radiation, but I can live with it.
- Tyrel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Videos work here right now (original source): http://www.kptv.com/Global/story.asp?S=4930302
Each one down the left side. - pintong, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Nope, it's in Oregon. It's across from Kalama, WA on the Oregon side of the Columbia where the river runs north. Look at the map ;)
- Aidenag, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i drove down there with a 400mm lense and took some pics of the implosion.. WOW! it was loud even from a distance. the shape of the structure i think amp'd the noise some.. cause this i swear made more noise than the Kingdome implosion and i was UBER close for that one too.
- brewer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Controlled Demolitions, Incorporated do awesome work. How fun would it be to implode stuff for your career?
- mancat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4So instead, we have coal and fuel oil power plants belching radioactive carbon emissions into the atmosphere, directly affecting the entire planet. That's much better.
- sohlemac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That was inside the tower.... the reactor is in that domed "building" to the left of the tower in the youtube video.
- VijchtiDoodah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Eh, not really, Metabolife. If that's a relatively new reactor, you won't even see anything happen. The core will melt, possibly burn a hole straight through the ground...but that's it. If anything, you'll get a crapload of steam as the heated core boils away all of its coolant -- but that's unlikely since a meltdown can only happen if there is a problem with the coolant in the first place.
- sawtooth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3actually, he brought up certain species of plants or animals that aren't found normally in Oregon.
- colinmhayes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3there was something oddly relaxing about that video/
- skankyBacon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Lots of Simpsons references come from Oregon. There are Flanders and Lovejoy streets in Portland (among others), there is a Springfield, and a statue here at the U of O is supposed to be the inspiration for the Jebediah Springfield statue. There's a list of them here: http://www.snpp.com/guides/whoiswho.html#portland
- sawtooth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"First of all, this is in WASHINGTON, not OREGON."
err not? Raineer Oregon. - ear1grey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"So instead, we have coal and fuel oil power plants belching radioactive carbon emissions into the atmosphere, directly affecting the entire planet. That's much better."
Apparently nuclear fuel isn't carbon-free either:
"The preparation of uranium for the reactor involves a host of CO2 -emitting processes, including: mining and milling the ore; fuel enrichment and fuel-rod fabrication. Then there's the construction of the power station itself. At the other end there's reactor decommissioning and the treatment, storage, transport and disposal of nuclear waste. All of this involves CO2 emissions, which in some areas - such as fuel enrichment - are significant."
From: http://www.greenpeace.org.uk/contentlookup.cfm?UCIDParam=20051111114227&MenuPoint=D-E-D - pintong, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The articles I read said that because it wasn't being maintained it was in danger of falling on its own. This way, they could control how it fell.
- dragon69, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6nothing like a good implosion to close out a weekend!
- rv8ch, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Cool - same guys that brought down the WTC buildings, according to Loose Change. They are everywhere!
