- geekee, on 10/12/2007, -3/+50"It may not be a popular point of view, but maybe we should keep that tax."
Or better yet, let's cut the pork barrel spending. - dallen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+28since it was in the usatoday, I think we can probably assume which country they were talking about
- Quickbreak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27But you've got to wonder: What tax has been implemented now that this tax has been killed?
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23To all the people complaining about the tax being repealed:
First off, I am as far from a Republican as can be. I worked for Jesse Jackson's campaign in '88, voted Democrat or Green in every major election, campaigned for Gen. Clark in '04, and am a firm believer in the need for peace & social justice.
This tax, however, was plainly, simply, WRONG. It was enacted for only one reason - to pay for the Spanish-American War. That was in the 19th CENTURY.
If you want more taxes, great, let's vote on some. Tugs - you want to put the money into social causes? Great, but those have to be put forward democratically. You can't take a tax that no-one alive today ever voted on OR approved, and treat that money like it belongs to the Treasury.
We keep passing "temporary" measures in this country, then never expiring them. This telephone excise tax, the 55 mph speed limit (a temporary gas saving plan that lasted for over 20 years), the Patriot Act...
Maybe this will be a trigger for other government programs to get reviewed now. I hate to say it, but good going, D.C. - azermuffin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23How 'bout this : I choose where to spend MY money and YOU get to choose where to spend your own damn money. Get your greedy hands out of my pocket !
- inboxnews, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24"It's not often you get to kill a tax"
~now isn't that the truth! - nathanmock, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19Keep in mind that much of that money is the nations debt to it's citizens.
- IncognitoCraven, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14$13 billion should be one clue, as is the name of the secreatary.
Thank you for playing. - nathanmock, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12You are a moron. Someone has gotten a visit from the secret service just by threatening the president. It happened here:
http://anniesj.livejournal.com/331112.html - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13how many of the 300 million are taxpayers? hell, only $43 dollars?!? $43 dollars could get me a digg t-shirt and a case of bawls! I'll take $43 dollars any day!!!!
- inboxnews, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13"The mission of the Department of the Treasury is to promote the conditions for prosperity and stability in the United States and encourage prosperity and stability in the rest of the world."
http://www.treasury.gov/education/duties/ - MikeSD34, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15Maybe we could use it to get that fiber service the telcos have been promising us.
- rasterbator, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13The US Government is facing this problem because of one phrase: deficit spending. The government as a whole (don't blame George Bush or Republicans or Democrats) continues to spend (excess of expenditure or liabilities) over income or assets every year. Part of the problem are the social programs in this country that are climbing in number and $$ each year. We cannot afford to give handouts to people any more. Last time I checked this was not a socialist government, but the liberals on the left and right have managed to push the country in that direction. We are about 25 years from a revolution.
- faddat, on 10/12/2007, -28/+37GET OUR ASSES OUT OF IRAQ, and cut the military budget in half! Ask yourself: what have no-bid contracts for halliburton to deliver tainted water and food to our troops in an unnecessary war done for me today? After that, we should have cut down the budget deficit, and maybe we can think of paying down our national debt.
- wiccidnu, on 10/12/2007, -7/+16One tax down!
Now lets see about getting rid of the rest of 'em. - iheartcrack, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Those "some" would include said Secret Service agents. They probably have a tap on all your communications already.
- nlatimer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Or when you write one to the government that is slightly less.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13about ***** time i started getting my money back
- eklitzke, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9If you actually threaten the president you *should* get a visit from the Secret Service. That's what they're there for. I think you meant to say that someone has gotten a visit from the secret service for being critical of the president, which is what the blog entry was about.
- buss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7The tax probably wasn't taking in enough to justify its existence. Three years worth of taxes only amounted to $13 billion? Its hardly worth keeping.
- iWorks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8heh, the Treasury Department now has a posting for a new Treasury Secretary on their site.
- Xalorous, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I'll believe it when I cash the check...
- nathanmock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6except not every American pays the tax. (only charged once per family, for example), so in actuality, it will probably be more.
- VorpalK, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Be sure to let us know how your "interview" goes, *****. Assuming you still have internet access.
That kind of "joke" isn't funny.
Calling it a joke after the fact isn't going to stop the Secret Service from taking a very keen and very disruptive interest in you, your life, and your carreer. You just flagged yourself as a potential terrorist, worse than saying "Bomb" in an airport.
You fail at life. - Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Oh, don't worry about knowing if you're entitled to a refund or not......the NSA has been keeping wonderful records of all of our phone calls, so they should know :)
- LR2_, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Obviously no one is laughing. (ie: getting your comment burried)
- VorpalK, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9I find it amusing that you've been modded down. Apparently there are more idiots that still believe the ***** fed to them by their socialist college profs than I imagined.
- jakeg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4the title of this post sucks. the government doesn't refund taxes to "consumers" it refunds taxes to "taxpayers"
- carpespasm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6it's ok, i don't think most people in the US could tell you the name of their treasurer.
- katina, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I assume we'll need copies of all of our telephone bills from the past three years? Of course we will. I hope you guys keep more thorough records than I do...
- psyduck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The people that earn the privelege of going to college go, it's that simple. There are so many ways to make it happen, there really is no excuse.
- ccanni1028, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3$300B to date isn't that much. That's ~$3B per year.
- Irimi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The economy is on fire and this just feeds it! 5.1%?!?!?! Damn these commies for setting the economy on fire via their 'ower taxes' - ARSONISTS!!!11 And they have this deficit! Something has to give! DOOOMM DOOOOOOm
- gmerin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2but will the telcos pass this refund on to the customers? Verizon always passes down the Federal taxes and surcharges, but I suspect that peoples' phone bills will increase accordingly to maintain funneling an amount equal to or more than the eliminated tax into the telcos' bank accounts (probably to cover the telcos' programming costs of modifying their accounting systems to accommodate the Fed's decision).
- spxiii, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2pgm
My mistake, I interpreted your response as if you approved of such action. I agree with your sentiments, though I still assert that fear of abuse of power will only make matters worse. - DerekJ212, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@VorpalK:
Are you serious? You are 100x more retarded than parent if you really feel that making a negative opinion known will result in a lawsuit and investigation. Please take yourself and your ignorant view elsewhere. - olorinpc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Phone companies and cellular carriers must stop billing for the tax Aug. 1. Individuals and businesses can file for refunds next year on their 2006 tax returns for excise taxes paid on long-distance calls since March 1, 2003."
For those saying the telcos will pocket the refund... read the article. - julesp, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Flake you say the rich invested on themselves? Isn't this investment what ultimately moves our country and creates jobs, factories, etc...?
- spxiii, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So you could say that it was well known before we even invaded Afganistan or Iraq that Halliburton would end up getting the contracts. You could even say it was in the best interest of Halliburton for these wars to take place. Interesting.
- Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"When has throwing more money at something ever worked? You want to fix education, health care and so on? Give people choice. Let people decide how to consume those services."
It works when the thing you're throwing money at doesn't have enough money to function in the first place. - spxiii, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I only with Bush had a "Big Brother" to worry about. He's like an only child who's parents are out of town.
- sundancekid503, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Mike Jones.... who?
- pgm_01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1spxiii
You seem to miss the point, I am not limiting you, the government is. All of the tools are in place for a full fascist takeover, they just keep inching it forward. I don't care what anyone says, in fact you should be allowed to yell fire in a crowded theater. The resulting arrest should be for causing an unnecessary panic, but not for the words themselves. - spxiii, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@pgm
Please don't push your views on the first amendment on others. I can use the president's face for a dart board if I want without the need to fear investigation. When did American citizens become so fearful of their government?
Bush is a lying, manipulative terrorist who uses fear to garner support for his crusades. He certainly deserves assassination more than JFK did, and no American should be afraid to voice such an opinion should they wish. A threat is a threat, and that is not a threat. - spxiii, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1$80 billion a month is a complete exaggeration! The DoD budget for 2006 is an anemic $419.3 billion, up only 41% since 2001. So what if billions are unaccounted for or wasted.
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/02/09/60minutes/main1302378.shtml
This decision is horrible. As others have said, this cut will only really benefit large companies while I get a check for $0.13 or so. Saying you're going to get even $40+ assumes that you and Microsoft spent the same amount on long distance calls. So let's celebrate for $0.13 (or $40, what's the difference) and watch as the deficit rises leading to further inflation. Maybe I should just mention gas prices to get my point across. - PBoiIceBerg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hmm, I get modded down for giving a simple fact. Anyway, please don't act like 3B a year/300B total isn't a lot of money. I doubt you've ever had more then $10,000 at one time in your life so you can't even comprehend how much money that is (Of course neither have I, but I never said what you did). Now, in terms of how the US government blows billions daily on ***** yes it may seem like nothing, but the simple truth is 300B dollars is a ***** ton of money.
- iWorks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1heh, i said there would be an opening following this announcement... and now today, it's announced.
"A senior Bush administration said Treasury Secretary John Snow is resigning and will be replaced by Goldman Sachs Chairman Henry M. Paulson Jr." - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ah but digg is different because anyone who visits can post here sometimes in a different langauge even http://digg.com/science/Le_tiers_des_adultes_ont_cess%C3%A9_d_apprendre_depuis_l_%C3%A9cole
- Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'd rather they put that $13,000,000,000 into education than get a $150 check in the mail.
- pgm_01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1DerekJ212 and thegreatone99
You can NOT make any threatening comments about the President in the US. It is always considered a threat, sometimes they just visit to scare the ***** out of someone, other times they may take the threat more seriously and seize the computer or search the home. You can call the President a moron and every name you can think of but anything that they determine to be a threat is investigated. They even investigated a college student about a poster in her room.
