TorrentSpy Shuts Down
torrentfreak.com — Little over a year ago TorrentSpy.com was still the most visited BitTorrent site, but times have changed. After an expensive two year battle with the MPAA, TorrentSpy decided to throw in the towel and the site has now shut down permanently.

- Sensai, on 03/27/2008, -1/+27Same. :-/
It's been shut down for a while for US citizens for a while now and I wasn't sure why, but they explained it in the article. Due to pressure from The Man, they had to submit stats of each user and they opted to protect us from the US.
And I know this is a little off subject, but with all the crazy people in this world raping 5 month old babies and lying about being shot at, etc, it's nice to see that there are people who I don't even know who would risk their finances to provide me and then risk their business by trying to protect me.
R.I.P.- Acglaphotis, on 03/27/2008, -1/+4I downloaded my first torrent from them too. Its sad to see them go away.
- Ataxia2008, on 03/27/2008, -1/+7Same here, I remember it distinctly because I had no idea what i was doing at the time (hence using TorrentSpy...)
It was Rage Against the machine's self titled album. (again, didn't know what I was doing at the time (sorry RAtM fans))
- Sensai, on 03/27/2008, -1/+27Same. :-/
- stonedslacker, on 03/27/2008, -7/+315Not to worry ... they can't win. Meanwhile here's a small list of torrent sites for all you people:

- Kasot, on 03/27/2008, -12/+93Can't say I used this site alot, but it's a loss nontheless.
- Godlike, on 03/27/2008, -1/+21There was a time when all I wanted out of torrents could be found on torrentspy... it was the most up to date resource that there was. It unfortunately went pretty downhill after the ban on North America but just like Suprnova it will always have its place in torrent history.
- spuncoke, on 03/27/2008, -10/+247It might have been good a few years ago but it was over run with ads and over bloated in the end.

- warriorscot, on 03/27/2008, -1/+2I always liked the music categories as I only used torrents for music as it was easy to pick out music that was good but I might not neccesarily have heard of otherwise.

- violentvinyl, on 03/27/2008, -2/+1I wonder if maybe it was because they had to finance an extended legal battle? I never used TorrentSpy, but I also remember it being more usable back in the day.
- web2pointYo, on 03/27/2008, -1/+2uuuu....thats in the description.
"After an expensive two year battle with the MPAA..."
I know not everyone reads the articles, but to post a comment without even reading the description is pretty bad.- violentvinyl, on 03/31/2008, -1/+1Did you read the parent? I wasn't asking if they were in a legal battle, I know they were, I was asking if MAYBE they bloated the site with ads BECAUSE they were in an extended legal battle.

- BobMysterioso, on 03/27/2008, -1/+22publicity to torrent sites? it has the word TORRENT in the url. Aside from TPB which generates its own publicity, any site with torrent in the url is not in any way trying to be private or secretive. - kevro, on 03/27/2008, -0/+5http://pizzatorrent.com/ Better. It lays out the results in categorized tabs.
- Burrito, on 03/27/2008, -0/+4I find the Youtorrent search engine lacking. There seems to be no way to narrow down a search that yields 100s of results.

- DeathMote, on 03/27/2008, -3/+19Um, they did that to protect American users because of the possibility of getting their data subpoenaed and getting users in trouble.
- WraTH017, on 03/27/2008, -2/+3Uh, they did it to protect themselves. They could have done other things if they wanted to protect American users, that didn't completely shun them from the website.

- DamnMan, on 03/27/2008, -2/+7man, I know thats a troll but really? we don't think we are entitled to free *****, just entitled to reasonable prices for goods and/or services rendered. 20 bucks for a cd with maybe 12 songs? only an average of a nickel gets back to the actual artist. $8.50 for a movie? not even a new movie, a movie remake of some 80s pop culture fodder. And don't forget to take out a second mortgage for some snacks while your at the theater.
Entitlement? Nope. Just less *****.- rezist, on 03/27/2008, -1/+6What? you steal *****, so do I, be honest with yourself. There are many other methods of fighting corporate practices that we disagree with. If you really want to sit there on a soap box, for every song you steal send $ directly to the artist.

- lukasmack, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2Demonoid was such as shame when it shut down but is just as bad for me. At one point this was the only site I used for P2P purely because of its simplicity and ease of use. Also i found its search function was second to none, most bit torrent site search does not seem to work well. But the day file-rights came to this sight i knew it was going downhill fast. I left very soon to the pirate-bay mininova and got attached to demonoid. Then that went and I was really *****.

When the Hydra gets a head cut off, multiple heads grow back.
Better statements:
"And from the Hydra's bloodied neck stump, three more heads shall rise to replace the one lost."
"And from the ashes of the Phoenix, another shall rise."- dark2025, on 03/27/2008, -2/+32...and you should learn to use the reply function.

- dudeguy1234, on 03/27/2008, -3/+11A lose for millions across the globe who used it to get new things they never would've used/seen if they had to buy it, i.e. yours.
- pittpat, on 03/27/2008, -3/+3I agree. I own 2 indie music stores and downloading hurts, but what hurts worse is when 1 person buys something and make 10 copies for friends. If you like something, BUY IT!! Support the artist!
- AvangionQ, on 03/27/2008, -1/+3This is the exact argument which is such a failure when it comes to statistical analysis of what file sharing actually does for overall sales figures ... file sharing promotes artists with free advertising and word of mouth which counteracts any effect that the `loss` of a free copy might have had ...

- tiuk, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2Toward the end of its life it had become over-run with ads, and it wasn't even hosting the .torrents themselves anymore, just linking to them on other sites. I can't say I'm really surprised to see this happen.
