I should know. I live here.
Ireland has Apple, Intel, Google, Yahoo! (they're moving their euro headquarters here I believe), and Microsoft.
The physics emulation company Havok started with a few students in Trinity College, Dublin (I personally met the ex-CEO). The online gaming middleware company Demonware are based in Dublin (I've met everybody who works there).
There are many other software companies in Ireland as well.
It's all a big secret, really. - tomoleary, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Ireland is a "best kept secret" in the tech world.
PollDaddy is cool, nycowboy. David, who wrote this article for readwriteweb.com developed it. - miketrash, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7You know digg has made it when they start getting the Jesus spammers.
- tomoleary, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Ireland - Great technology with a Guinness sauce.
Nice job! - KillerJ59J, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6When they say 'spread the word' I think they had something else in mind, keeblamos. I'm Christian, but I'm gonna have to Digg you down for spamming.
- speechpoet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I knew Ireland had made great strides as a tech centre, but had no idea so much Web 2.0 ferment was bubbling away. Thanks for this!
- NYCowboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3polldaddy looks cool
- sagat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Of course Lenny does.
- roxby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There sure is a lot going on in ireland at the moment.
- amal3k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Statcounter hasn't worked for me in ages :|
To be fair though, 2008 will see the end of a ten-year deal with big corporations that offer them low taxes and other such benefits.
In preparation for this, companies like Creative, IBM, HP, Vodafone and a whole lot more have already closed up sections of their Irish operation and shipped off to eastern Europe and such.
Tunisia now does French HP tech support, that kind of thing. - MrBabyMan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Ah, the inevitable Irish jokes...there they are.
- tomoleary, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I didn't know until recently how big the US Tech investment was in Ireland. I think that it's Dell's leading manufacturing base.
- dereko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1check out http://1timetracking.com also Irish Online time and expense tracking software. Ideal for project based service companies or any company with a requirement to record employee time.
- CatCubed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Interesting apps. Though from a look at those boring logos, it seems like there is not a single good branding designer in all of Ireland.
- tomarocco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's good to see a third world country trying to play with Web 2.0, though they would probably fare better competing with moderndrunkardmagazine.com.
- tomoleary, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Did you know that Microsoft made 1000 Irish millionaires since moving to the Emerald Isle?
- Bonzodog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1We have ebay in Cork as well, remember. Here in Galway, we also have HP, and SAP, and Cisco systems.
Yes, Ireland is set to become the absolute centre of the European IT industry, provided the damned government, or whoever takes over at this years General Election, doesn't screw it up by changing the IT Investment levels. Also, it would help if the Irish Telcos got their fingers out of their arses, and started making sure that Broadband is available *anywhere* - that includes the top of Croagh Patrick if I feel like it! - tomoleary, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Perhaps that's because the Irish are more concerned about the quality of the applications than the fluffiness of the packaging. That can be difficult to understand for those who were raised on generous helpings of superficiality; in cultures where plasticity is praised more than value. Just a thought. There are certainly cultural issues to consider.
- grayapple, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No not really - You don't get praise from something that looks good, you get praise for something that works.
I should know - I am Irish, and yes I am planning on going to the pub tonight. - grayapple, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Comming from Ireland I'm still surprised of what we have to offer.
- tomoleary, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've visited useamap.com (as a matter of fact, put our US Infacta office on it). Didn't know it was Dublin-based though. Nice one! How many other apps are out there that we didn't realize came out of Ireland?
- tomoleary, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Third world indeed! lol
"Ireland's economy is 81.3 percent free, according to our 2007 assessment, which makes it the world's 7th freest economy. Its overall score is 0.1 percentage point higher than last year, partially reflecting new methodological detail. Ireland is ranked 2nd out of 41 countries in the European region, and its overall score is much higher than the regional average."
http://www.heritage.org/research/features/index/country.cfm?ID=Ireland - grayapple, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dell, Apple, Microsoft and Seagate in Derry I think - loads more aswell.
- tomoleary, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1GrayApple, I was talking about the US in particular (just recently moved back after 10 years in Europe), who often hype substandard products with clever advertising and marketing campaigns. Underneath the bells and whistles, the products often fail to wow. The US Auto Industry is taking such a beating recently because the American consumer is beginning to realize this and the high-cost super bowl ads are less effective as a result. Quality is quickly becoming the only measure for consumers around the world, as we are all seeing through the fancy wrappings of available products and services.
Have a pint for me! Now that's quality! - roxby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0StatCounter have some impressive stats too
- ponosocheg, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0So... Rubbish.
- swiftekho, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Considering India and Ireland are the top two countries for program outsourcing, I don't see this as a surprise it is Irish
Putplace sounds like a fantastic idea though...
I'm still waiting on an Irish iBeer - vinnyglennon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Check out http://useamap.com, an Dublin based startup that offers embedded maps, widgets and very short urls like useamap.com/dcu to show dublin City University. The person creating the map, decides what to call the system. It has been called the tinyurl of maps!
- lolo2007, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0We have ebay in Cork as well, remember. Here in Galway, we also have HP, and SAP, and Cisco systems.
