- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+73MySpace may technically be w2.0 in architecture, but in spirit, appearance, interface, user base, etc... it's stuck firmly in the mid-90's.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Oh, I agree that Skype was a great idea, but Web2.0? I think not.
- shreyans, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15MySpace made it and Google didn't?
What's up with that? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12I don't think MySpace qualifies as web2.0. This guy seems to think that it means "What's Popular" on the web right now. And Skype? What's up with that?
- Wogna, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Who uses those?
- menacingcheese, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I surprised that wikipedia isn't on there. It clearly fits the user-generated criteria. I'm not sure what their traffic numbers are but considering that nearly anything I type into google these days comes up with a wikipedia hit within the first page or two I imagine the numbers are pretty good.
- method77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6crearly he means most popular sites. No Web 2.0 in most of those
- jaredvolkl, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8@v4m21
Wordpress is a fine blogging engine/CMS. Most sites can not handle the digg effect well regardless of whether they're using Wordpress or not. Think about it. Most people who are going to use Wordpress are going to be bloggers. They're not going to have a massive hosting plan (or they're hosting it on a home server). Your comments are misdirected. - crawfishsoul, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7@Bioshocker - Get off my damn lawn.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Squidoo was put on the losers list (http://wisdump.com/web/top-10-web-20-losers/).
- hobgobbler, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9I'd leave out Newsvine because it irritates me to read the opinions of all those wanna-be talking heads and I think Myspace screams 'Fad'.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4MySpace?! Over Yahoo!?! I would put Yahoo! on top. Look at how far they've gone. They have implemented so many AJAX features, and online bookmarking is getting much bigger and better because of them.
- Charlotte_Web, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Umm... user-generated content was a feature of web 1.0. (eBay, Geocities, Slashdot)
What's Web 2.0 about MySpace is more social than technological, IMO... MySpace is more like Geocities 2.0. - minifig, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Of course it's out of date, or heading that way. Such is the way the net works. Doesn't make it any less of an interesting article.
And Myspace surely deserves a place on any list of this type - whether you like it or not, it's one of the most popular sites around, and for all of its rickety look it's very Web2.0 - supanaturalhigh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4When did "a couple" come to mean four?
- web2.0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yep, a good list, and certainly most of them are Web 2.0 (addressing method77's criticism), note that if they use rich Internet technologies on these sites, they are NOT using Ajax. YouTube primarily uses Flash for example.
You can see why here:
http://web2.wsj2.com/seven_things_every_software_project_needs_to_know_about_ajax.htm - Rageous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ghost town? My Newsvine RSS feed dumps over 1,200 articles a day on me.
It's a phenomenal concept that needs some time to grow, and I've been thoroughly impressed by the user implementation. Props to the guy for putting it on his list. - bpapa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Well, it's all based on user-generated content, which is a big cornerstone of web 2.0.
- wildmXranat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4It won't be long before this lists is outdated. Additionally, MySpace screams fad and is a fad. The list's already out of date, - give that one more try.
- AhmedF, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Holy link/SEO spam on the right batman.
- Phegan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3And the millions of dollars it is making? and even more hits per day Of you forgot about those.
- Prelude76, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3i think web2.0 should be user-generated content, AND advanced programming. i mean, where is e-bay in this lax web2.0 definition? they pioneered user-generated content, yet aren't considered web2.0 on this list?
all MySpaces does is bring back the gay 90's style of web pages back into our faces. flashing GIFs, flashing text, background songs on each page, non-scrolling background images. ugh, Fugly! - jtwilkins, on 04/03/2009, -2/+4Newsvine is a ghost town!
And this guy just makes stuff up.
Hey it's a top 10 list, lets all digg it! - Rageous, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Not sure about the numbers, but one thing remains true: Digg is definitely one of the loudest and most effective minorities on the web.
- minifig, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Well, he kind of explains that at the beginning of the article. Personally, I think that Skype fits very well onto a list like this and gives it a bit of variety.
- cellis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Personally, people on digg are hyped up about nothing, from a financial standpoint at least. I mean, I know I'm going to get buried on this one, but digg isn't making any profit. WordPress is (basically) a non-profit, Flickr got acquired, Yahoo.com isn't web 2.0 but rather just a remnant of the old web, YouTube is bleeeding money in server costs.
My List looks like this.
1. Myspace.com - actually makes money
2. Facebook.com -actually makes money
3. Prosper.com - actually makes money
4. rentacoder.com - not in design, but in user participation, very much 2.0
5. numerous blogs, too many to be named
I'm not saying that these are the best business models, but they are making money and if they were to go public tomorrow, i'd take them first over any hyped up *****. - eNthem, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Where is Netvibes, Delicious, JumpCut (acquired by Yahoo today)??
- brettgian, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1There is also a news about web 2.0 http://digg.com/tech_news/Web_2_0_Online_Marketing ... but winner are really ...what they think...
- iamdek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It's a fair list IMO ... and it introduced me to netvibes.com for the first time. Many thanks.
- v3xt0r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Top 10 'When a Tech 'Breakthrough' Isn't Really' Winners
See, now that is a mashup. I mashed up the title of this article, and a title of an article from slashdot.
This is my web2.0 comment mashup style! =p - Prelude76, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2proper link to Top 10 Losers list. jheiselman, you accidentally included the brackets in the HTML link.
http://wisdump.com/web/top-10-web-20-losers/ - Phegan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2@Prelude76
I miss those days, I remember my old members.aol.com homepage had a picture of Joey Lawrence, because he was the worst actor ever and said soemthing about a bag of pubes. - Phegan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Hey everyone! Lets be anal about what Web 2.0 is and complain about what he wrote!!!
- CharlesV, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2"Skype. If you use VoIP you use Skype. That’s pretty much all you need to know."
Unless you use Vonage, ViaTalk, Verizon VoiceWing, AT&T CallVantage, SunRocket, Lingo, NetZero, BroadVoice, America Online, Packet8, Earthlink, or Gizmo Project (according to Wikipedia), or any number of hardware based IP-Phones (Cisco, etc.).
Maybe we do need to know a little more? - Phegan, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Myspace screams Fad that will be around for another 4 years imo. Not to sound like an elitist ***** though, but it gives stupid people reason to use the internet..and that makes the world a worse place.
- patrickloggins, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Ah yes, I can't wait until all of us MySpacers are 70 and the greeters at Wal-Mart say "Yo, want a sticker lol?"
- NervClaX, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Skype was a great idea. And $2 Billion dollars of eBay's money can't be wrong.
- generalleoff, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I tended to prefer Gizmo over Skype but I haven't used any of the new versions of Skype in nearly a year and for that matter haven't used Gizmo in nearly as long cuz I tend to prefer TeamSpeak over both. TeamSpeak kinda wouldn't count though cuz it's not the same concept as Skype or Gizmo.
I run a dedicated TeamSpeak server + a dedicated Jabber server that only me and the select few friends I see as worthy have access too.
Also I do not think Skype really should be on this list anyway. Web 2.0 should be about use full sites and/or applications that run FROM the Internet not applications that you install on your computer that USE the Internet - scsikool, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1If your talking about popularity, I think on of the big up and comers is runescape.com Kids are addicted to it and lots of them pay money for full access.
- IEatHamburgers, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Perhaps he figured everybody knew that already, and he just had to make a case for Facebook to get in there at the bottom instead of letting it be pushed out by Google.
Of course, he might just think Yahoo is better... - markus941, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1squidoo is awesome! .... for spammers
- psilanthropist, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1you call that a webpage mate ???
Why dont you throw in a Microscope while you're at it, so that we can actually read it ???
Just a question, can you read it Paul ? - wirah, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3Great to see Digg up there with the web 2.0 winners!
MySpace on the other hand, it's only a success in the eyes of brainless idiots and awful bands (which there seem to be millions of) - bluenova, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1What a load of bull crap. At least 5 of the 10 don't even use Web 2.0 technology!
- marc.smith, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1i second that
- ritec, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1I can't wait for the web 3.0 awards!
- yahoofrom, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1MySpace is higher than Digg?
- Bioshocker, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0+1 for tragic truth. If he'd remembered to put "Praise about Digg" into the title or description, he'd have completed the holy trifecta of Front-Page-Trolling Keywords.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+6Shame: Wordpress in 2nd position
Word press just bans the web pages which are dugg by diggers due to the load.
And they can't cope up with that kind of load and they r in 2nd position, shame, shame. - Llanowar, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1I don't know why I am being dugg down here, as far as I know Digg hasn't gotten nearly 500k registered users...
When I look for it I find 311136 users, And that is from all time... so 500k users in the first 2 months is not correct. -
