- ynyfrik, on 10/10/2007, -4/+44Why is Parallels in this list? It's Proprietary.
- criscokid, on 10/10/2007, -1/+34A few of those apps aren't open source, and some aren't even free.
- gitgan, on 10/15/2007, -1/+15These aren't all open source applications. Too many times people confuse open source with freeware/shareware.
- hardcrocodile, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14Acquisition is not open source. A single user license is $24 and a family license is $33.
- blackmage439, on 10/10/2007, -4/+15Is there a spell or grammar check program in the list? Sounds like the author could use it...
- Lunhil, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8the only time he mentions Parallels is when comparing it to Qemu.
- iang, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7http://www.opensourcemac.org/ ?
- PresidentPutin, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8In Soviet Russia, apples are for eating! Cannot get computer programs to run on fruit, silly Americans!
- maclaxguy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7ah ha. oh man, you're a funny guy.
- rubbers0ul, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8Any reasons as to why? What if I want more than just QuickSilver? What if I want Chocolate?
But seriously stfu about QuickSilver - lvjtfan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5None of the mirrors got it.
On the same note, remember when FreeMacWare.com didn't suck. I wish the old owners would come back. it used to be such a good resource for free mac software. - Genthree, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5It may not be open source, but don't forget that software can be open source and still cost money.
- ciphex, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6The majority of these apps are not open source. Most aren't even free.
Quicksilver, the best app on here, is not even open source, though it is free.
Very very poorly titlted article... does the author doesn't even know the definition of OSS??
Great software in this list list but i can't digg something so blatently misrepresented. - calebdesu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4It basically makes an iTunes music share that you can access within iTunes (and most other Media Players) from any computer on your network. I don't think you can add music to your iPod from music shares though.
- thebaconmonster, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Not really.... I only use mt-daapd on my bsd box so I can share music with all of the laptops / whatever in my house (and near my house).
- monospaced, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Must mean Acquilite.
- kingkilr, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6No, no it isn't, for starters the list won't even load, and if the grammar seen here is any indicator the list would be easier to read if it were in Swahili.
- TwentyXD6, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5This person seems to have no idea what the term "open-source" means.
- bogdan77, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Ableton Live open source?!? In your dreams, buddy...
...Whoever made this list doesn't know what he's talking about. - keozen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Doesn't seem to be down from here, just slow.
The title is inaccurate though, many of the progs listed are open source but many are also shareware and require licences for full functionality.
Having said that there are a lot of good ones there. The latest version of X-Torrent rocks - fucayama, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Sorry for comment abuse but just looked and this is a blatant site rip of http://www.opensourcemac.org with a few payware and closed-source apps thrown in. Unfortunately the site appears to be down at the minute which is lucky for these guys really.
- Rupan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Too bad not all of this is opensource. Skype closed Parallels Closed Sixty Force Closed Google Earth Closed
Only things I saw I am going to try is Quicksilver and Camino. I had heard of Camino many times before but never tried it this kick me in the ass too. - SteveMax, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Coral got it, after a long load:
http://www.ajaxflakes.com.nyud.net:8080/open-sourc ...
Submitters, please, just load a Coral cache before submitting an article. It won't cost you anything, and can help people see your story. - dragazis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3How does this list not have Transmission (torrent client), Bean (even nicer and certainly more Mac like word processor than NeoOffice) and The Unarchiver (which unarchives more file types than UnRarX)?! All three are pretty big open-source Mac applications amongst Mac users.
- agent888, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6My first mac is on its way....glad to see this list.
Can anyone explain Daapd server for linux to me? If I setup an SSH server, can I access my music from anywhere with itunes on my laptop and drop files to my ipod? - SPECOPS, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3RESPONSE: Sorry, a mirror of Top 100 best open source mac software is not available.
- tpv2066, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5site is down and out...awesome
- blackhydra, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Agreed.
- wilhel1812, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2hahaha lættis lol rofl heheheheheheh lmao roflmfao
- rubbers0ul, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Proprietary how again? And the quality of the hardware is higher than a crappy Dell laptop, Thinkpads loaded out identically cost more than macbooks, and yet you never see anyone complain about those do you?
- rubbers0ul, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Proprietary how again? And the quality of the hardware is higher than a crappy Dell laptop, Thinkpads loaded out identically cost more than macbooks, and yet you never see anyone complain about those do you?
- neodorian, on 10/22/2007, -0/+2Why did you digg it in the first place?
- JoeDiggsIt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1That's exactly what I thought, it feel's dirty to view this site.
- sparkrainfir, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1agreed. i don't know how people use macs without quicksilver. anytime i walk up to a mac and ctrl space doesn't bring up quicksilver i'm dumbfounded.
- Goobernutz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I think it's funny how many windoze and *nix fanboys read and comment on mac articles then try to put down Mac owners. There's a term for this condition. It's call "Mac curious". Some day they'll get sick of spending days hunting down drivers, defragging, and reinstalling their precious OS's every 6 months and join the enlightened few.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1"Sounds," or "looks?"
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1"Take a peek it's worth your while if your a mac user and don't want to pay outrageous amounts"
what - CCmachined, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1closed source and proprietary. Hardware is irrelevant... actually my Dell Inspiron is great thanks ;)
my point was, buy a commercial OS shows you believe OS code should be commercialized, so why do you expect free programs for that OS?
when i said i thought Macs Just Worked, as in, i thought it would come with all the software you need, like i hear from Apple? my Ubuntu Linux has just about everything i need, only need to install Kopete for advanced MSN support =] - schotty, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1lol
Actually, most F/LOSS software is available for the Mac. The only question is whether or not X is required to allow it to run. The preferred method is to have it ported to Aqua. But there are some apps that aren't, and need X11. - antitab, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1What are you on about? What's "improper" about a proprietary OS? Furthermore, what's proprietary about Darwin? Finally, what does an OS "Just Working" have to do with the multitude of high quality applications available for it?
- VVho, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Stolen from
http://bestmacsoftware.org/ - surely - tfrischholz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0If you're really looking for THE site for mac freeware go to: http://www.myosxfreeware.com !!
- jeston13, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1open source doesn't necessarily mean free it just means the source code is open to alter and view as you like
it has nothing to do with being free although that is mostly the case - topopardo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1What the hell, most of them are not only proprietary, but also commercial!
- twoboxen, on 10/16/2007, -2/+2The point was that it's an old joke. hardly anything new. Thank you for being ignorant.
- mwbarker, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Sorry for the double post.
- adoxtater, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Bah! Undigg! Undigg!
