- viruz, on 06/03/2008, -0/+38wasn't this on techcrunch last week. and before every says "now everyone will run their own facebook site"... this isn't the facebook "site" code. just their application platform code( you know? where they make those most annoying zombie apps).
- MarkBroadhurst, on 06/03/2008, -5/+33I can tell you the source right now.
public void OnUserUpdate()
{
SendUsersDetailsToAffiliates();
UpdateListOfAdverts();
ViolateUsersPrivicy();
} - rtgarden, on 06/03/2008, -6/+24google app engine sdk is the funnest thing in a long time. Not only has google opened their code they have made coding fun again.
Thats hard to beat.
Everyone needs to open source everything! - DonSlice, on 06/03/2008, -1/+19What does this mean for the average Facebook user? Better apps? More secure apps? Better programmed "Zombie vs Werewolf vs Sith vs Jedi vs Pirate vs Ninja" apps?
I guess I don't really comprehend what going open source is going to do for Facebook for the general user.
And before you Digg me down- I'm just asking what you're too afraid to ask. - jggube, on 06/03/2008, -3/+13I'm wondering how Facebook plans to counter Google, I'm doubtful they're in the same league as it is, and going open source probably won't do the trick.
- smthop3, on 06/03/2008, -1/+9Is it really ridiculous people on Facebook can't friend people on Myspace? I mean they are run by two different companies. Also, you look at social networking waaay too technically, emailing someone and writing a wall post are not the same thing.
- gabrielsond, on 06/03/2008, -0/+5I agree completely. As a heavy facebook user and a programmer I have no interest in this. I think its a good thing in general but it doesn't make me want to write yet another lame facebook app.
- skidooer, on 06/03/2008, -1/+6"it was ridiculous that friends would use those platforms to communicate with each other rather than email."
Last time I checked, email has no feature that allows me to message my friend, but also make the message passively available to other friends. - maninalift, on 06/03/2008, -0/+4That is counter Google's threat to it's social networking market with Open Social. I assume you don't think Open Social is bigger than Facebook?
- Canadian0207, on 06/03/2008, -0/+4you must be using Myspace
- inactive, on 06/03/2008, -0/+4burp
- skidooer, on 06/03/2008, -0/+4Since I haven't had a chance to play with it yet, what makes the Google App Engine SDK more fun than, say, Django?
- known, on 06/03/2008, -1/+4Thanks Facebook.
Open Source Software promotes Competition.
Closed Source Software promotes Collusion. - cooterthekid, on 06/03/2008, -1/+4Great.....now everyone will be able to build annoying applications for FaceBook...look out!
- championchap, on 06/03/2008, -0/+3Got me back in touch with my sister.
Can't be all bad. - radiofrequency, on 06/03/2008, -0/+2Minus the comparison to the Nazi's, I agree with you about facebook.
- DonSlice, on 06/03/2008, -2/+4Facebook is great. It got me in touch with people I used to hang out with in Highschool and my first couple years of college. It lets me communicate with people I otherwise wouldn't have access to.
- skidooer, on 06/03/2008, -0/+2Cc/Bcc is not passive.
- godfly, on 06/03/2008, -1/+3corny. just sayin'.
- john2kx, on 06/03/2008, -2/+4sounds like their PR department is hiring.
- championchap, on 06/03/2008, -0/+2..they wern't able to before?
I think i've blocked every application i've been notified about now. - sint4x, on 06/03/2008, -0/+2I hope someone adds OpenSocial container support to Facebook.
The irony... - eldinb, on 08/09/2008, -0/+2Google > Facebook
- JasonCox, on 06/03/2008, -0/+2There are some things that should be closed source. For example, any platform that has more information about me than what is displayed in a Google search should not be open.
- inactive, on 06/03/2008, -0/+2I can't imagine all the problems we would find with that code.
- MtheoryX, on 06/03/2008, -0/+1Godwin.
Just sayin'. - Remmiz, on 06/03/2008, -1/+2But can you poke your friends through e-mail? That's what I thought.
- EdgeTX, on 06/03/2008, -0/+1What security risks does this pose to the user? Or the users friends for that matter? I mean if one of my friends on Facebook adds an opensourse app, and then it turns out to be something that attacks and attaches to all it's friends, then we have the MySpace dillema all over again, and again, and again!
- Shadow120, on 06/03/2008, -0/+1inb4 reverse backconnect shell scripts get clear'd by facebook team
- MrViklund, on 06/03/2008, -0/+1Who cares?
- pxlpshr, on 09/04/2008, -1/+2Instead of open sourcing it quite yet, Facebook should focus their time on better understanding core problems with their platform and address those complaints. Complaints that stem from both the end-users and developers...
Their move to open source is a desperate one, IMO. And it actually scares me given the amount of information that is retained on FB servers, which they make difficult deleting in the event you want to leave FB. Nazi-like. - rasterbator, on 06/03/2008, -0/+1If LinkedIn could use Google's open source code to generate a way to have separate personal and business profiles, it would the best tool. Then Facebook could be buried along with its annoying ads and notifications.
- amnezia22, on 06/03/2008, -1/+2Google app engine supports the Django templating system
- Remmiz, on 06/03/2008, -2/+3welcome to the web, enjoy your stay.
- aladrin, on 06/03/2008, -1/+2Amnezia has halfway said it... It's everything Django is and more. The very fast distributed database and single sign-on are big draws.
- mintblogger, on 06/04/2008, -0/+1I think, different social netwoks are going to have strong presence in different geographic locations, like orkut has strong presence in Brazil and India. Similarly, dacebook is more popular in North America. Making it open source is not going to be of much help.
- mcm297, on 06/03/2008, -1/+2Cool. Now let's hope that myspace doesn't release their code to the open source world.
- doshindude, on 06/03/2008, -2/+3This is great, everything should go open source.
It is worth mentioning though that FB isn't going 100% open source, it's only their platform. - john2kx, on 06/03/2008, -1/+1yawn
- inactive, on 06/03/2008, -1/+1This is somewhat old news (last week), but what I understood from it then was that FaceBook apps could be used on sites outside of Facebook.
- radiofrequency, on 06/03/2008, -2/+2It's not the code... it's the product. Unlike Google, facebook doesn't offer anything useful.
- inactive, on 08/05/2008, -0/+0What security risks does this pose to the user? Or the users friends for that matter? I mean if one of my friends on Facebook adds an opensourse app, and then it turns out to be something that attacks and attaches to all it's friends, then we have the MySpace dillema all over again, and again, and again!

- dalsonadosd, on 06/25/2008, -0/+0There is nothing wrong with the Facebook move - pro-active behaviour. 'm looking forward for the results like increasing the Facebook image (flexibility, responsiveness, serving better the purpose of communication) and loyalty (more relationship).
Another hopeful results: People could learn new things and find meaning on them.
Cheers! -
