- sotopheavy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+148Great, now time warner can choose to slow down any service (or piece of software that requires internet access) they want. Or worse, slow down all services except those who pay them off. It won't be long before they slow down a your software's access to the internet unless the software authors pay them a bandwidth protection fee. Can anyone say internet mafia!
This is why we need net neutrality stat! - MetaDFF, on 10/11/2007, -2/+109If TWC is going to packet shape newsgroups, p2p, audio, and video, they might as well change the name of their service from "High Speed Internet" to "High Speed HTTP + email"
- frieddonuts, on 10/11/2007, -1/+77That's it TimeWarner. You just passed Comcast on my hate list.
- rb89, on 10/11/2007, -1/+73This is ridiculous. Customers pay for their bandwidth. They should be able to use that bandwidth for whatever they want within their legal rights, whether it's video, music, gaming, etc. If the companies aren't going to let customers use the bandwidth they allot them, they need to reduce their billing accordingly and be more up front with consumers.
- xerus, on 10/11/2007, -2/+50Well, Time Warner Road Runner was awesome until now.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+44Very true, people pay for their several Mbps and now they can just cap you when YOU ARE USING YOUR SERVICE YOU *P*A*I*D* FOR
- strictnein, on 10/11/2007, -1/+43Peak hours are just the hours between 0 and 24. All other hours are offpeak.
- spambutcher, on 10/11/2007, -0/+36just wait until they offer a "Media Express Download" option to allow full traffic rates for music / video downloads. Only an extra $10 / month!
- dyslixec, on 10/11/2007, -3/+35This is exactly why people need to pay attention to http://www.savetheinternet.com and help it. Because this ***** will continue to be pulled until we can fully get the government to put a stop to this *****.
- OBKenobi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+29Japanese pipe bigger than American pipe.
- handler, on 10/11/2007, -1/+30This is *****, I have TW.
- 800266622, on 10/11/2007, -1/+29And Time Warner Road Runner just lost a customer who's been loyal to them since 1998. I'll call to cancel at the end of this billing session, and I will cite a desire to have access to speeds that I pay for as a reason. It seems pointless to me to have a ~8mbit account if I can only use those 8mbits when I'm asleep.
I wonder if my relatives will stick with them, as there are plenty of options to those of us in Texas. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+28lol, yep
Cheap 100Mbps and the comapnies actually have big enough pipes for that. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+29Definitely time to get FiOS. I'm really pissed too because compared to RR speeds, FiOS isnt a better deal, as RR is the same speed down (a little slower up), for less money. Not to mention they always are upping the speed a little, argh!
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+24....this is not good.I wish I could go and get FIOS.
- ogletree, on 10/11/2007, -0/+23The whole reason I have RR is to use high bandwidth applications. Isn't that there big selling point?
- NicksVideo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+22@cdnyny
Ever head of a queue? I'm not on constantly. - NicksVideo, on 10/11/2007, -3/+22Damn. I frequently pull 200GB+ a month from newsgroups. I'm going to miss that 7mbps when I get 'shaped'.
- int128, on 10/11/2007, -1/+20Not true. I have worked for Two ISP's, and both sold their customers the "potential" of High Speeds, but not High Speeds itself. This is done for obvious reasons, they cant handle the load. But if you read your contract, you'll see all you are paying for is the ACCESS, not the SPEED.
Im not defending them, just pointing out how they can get away with this. - deadbaby, on 10/11/2007, -0/+18Heres the link to file complaints:
http://www.fcc.gov/cgb/complaints_general.html - blogstar, on 10/11/2007, -0/+18A really complicated problem at this point in time, one aspect is this is the price you pay for 'cheap' access.
Over the past 10 years consumers have consistantly chosen to save a few pennies over any sort of long term policy or even quality of service issues.
So now the big bad telco, with no small help from Washington, is sharpening its teeth for the big ass bite.
I remember having discussions with supposedly savvy internet entrepenuers years ago when provider consolidation was taking place, and how much resistance there was to making decisions on anything except a how-cheap-can-I get-it-now basis.
Face it, the internet is crack, and its dealers are the thuggish top tier providers. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+18"Peak hours" are what Time Warner defines as "peak hours"
- Tippis, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18I'd be laughing too if I weren't stuck on this antiquated 10/10Mbit network :(
Oh well, 100 is coming within a year or so. - geminitojanus, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18Probably get the same form letter you'd get when complaining about things to politicians.
"Hey _YOUR NAME HERE_,
Thank you for spending the time to write to us. We assure you, your letter did not just go through our industrial-sized paper shredder after scanning your name and address so we could send you this reply. We want you to know that we really care about your opinion, and to please send more letters like yours so that we can burn them to heat our buildings.
Love,
Your Federal Government" - OBKenobi, on 10/11/2007, -2/+19
So who can I complain too?
Monopolies do not listen to reason, and they own your politicians. You will complain to no one. - Spelvin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16If it is truly packet shaping it does not matter what port you send your traffic down. Its called PACKET shaping since it reads the headers of all packets to determine their priority and alloted bandwidth.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15@jesusfreak
DOCSIS3 won't be seen much for a LONG time. Heck, a lot of ISP's are still using DOCSIS 1.1. The cost of tech to implement and support such technology is still way to high for service providers. Even the cable companies themselves came out and said this after the ratification of the standard. - xerus, on 10/11/2007, -3/+17How do you know that FiOS isnt pulling ***** like this too? ;(
- N3M3515, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14The most hilarious thing about this is that Time Warner puts in their EULA that if you try to circumvent the packet shaping your in violation of the EULA. So they can pretty much choose to stop your service if you use too much bandwidth and you are encrypting your data.
- wtfersk8s, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14It hasn't happened here in KC yet, im currently downloading a DVD with my normal 10mb down. The second i see the speed drop I'm going to call and curse up a storm. If im paying extra for my speeds, i better get them.
This is no different than buying a Ferrari but they putting a governor at 70 mph. ***** BIG BUSINESS! - NicksVideo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12@deadbaby
Often times there are no other/limited options. My only other option here is Embarq DSL. Blah. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12Also, cable companies aren't likely to handout the max speed of DOCSIS 3 when they haven't even handed out the max speed for DOCSIS 1.x yet.
- stakk, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11There has been much debate about this on /.
Is a random post on DSLrepot a true press release? No. Would they announce implementation of this technology to the world. Probably not. - TheSource, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10I would move to FiOS but Time Warner has a monopoly over New York City, there are no other options.
- CanineDblTake, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12Don't think for a second that Time Warner's backbone, ATDN can't handle the traffic. It can. They're just cheap and upset that people are using what they pay for. Their philosophy of overselling their local networks in hope of a few pennies more has caught up with them...because more and more people have discovered BitTorrent and YouTube and Joost and Skype and VOIP and newsgroups and on and on.
- spectre_25gt, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Socal sucks too. I'm sitting at 2mb/384kb for $30.00 with ATT.
- elitedw, on 10/11/2007, -3/+13Way to Go Time Warner for making more users pissed off that Fios isn't available in their area yet.
- ecorona, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Time Warner does not need or want us. They are perfectly happy keeping 90% of http+email users. The only way we can truly hurt them is by word of mouth. Start spreading the info guys, time warner wants will monitor what you are doing online and will pick and choose applications it will slow down for you.
- Spanktacular, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9So much for paying a service fee for PREMIUM and UNLIMITED internet services...
- Bootes, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8I know because I've had Fios for over a year and often max out my download and upload.
- deadbaby, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9The FCC is your best bet. They are the ones in charge of cable franchise agreements. The franchise agreements can include provisions for pretty much anything -- improved speeds, system upgrades, policy changes, etc. If enough people complain things will change.
- moofree, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Why announce anything when they can just change (or have already changed?) the terms of service?
- darwin81, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9*****!!! The only two cable Internet services in my area are Comcast and RR. Well I guess it doesn't effect me as much right now since I only have a 512K connection anyway. I hate Florida.
- Anthracene, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8At least you have 2.
- timewaster, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Timewarner = Comcast where I live(near Houston) starting June 19th ;[
- next, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9@cdyny
This has nothing to do with "always being online". Honestly, this makes it necessary for you to remain online LONGER, if anything.
Think about it. You come home from work and want to grab an album on iTunes (or your favorite tracker) before you go running. You have lots of other things to get done, but instead, you're waiting on your damn download for even longer because your service is capped. - hadees, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8So who can I complain too? And what is my alternative? DSL? Damn it!
- dattaway, on 10/11/2007, -4/+11I'm already seeing port 80 used for p2p.
