- spectrox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8But as always, the people that use DirectTivo will be screwed. Why can't DirectTV figure out that their customers want these features too?
- unmarked, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If they release some new crap without fixing the dreaded Kidzone mess (which makes some TiVos as slow as molasses in January), they've completely lost a customer.
Both of my TiVos have become unusable. I don't need more features. I need it to work like it did before you pushed that worthless Kidzone crap on my machines!!!! - bloodguard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"Available later this year for Microsoft Windows @ $25"
Meh.
Galleon's been uploading all my video podcasts and other internet content to my tivo for free for well over a year now. And it's running nicely on my linux server. No windows needed.
You're going to need to try harder and move faster Tivo. - mcaaronice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Hey at least now you have us Series 3 owners in the same boat.
- jarek91, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3and that's the very reason I hacked my DirectTivo to a generic version 6.x with HMO...
- Lynxpro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3
Replay was sued but the EFF had their own lawsuit that proved the features were legal. However, SonicBlue bankrupted itself from the lawsuits while TiVo played it cool and still exist. - spectrox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4This was the case with ***** (Home Media Option) and the ability to remotely schedule your Tivo...
- Stonelion, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Specially not if they are going to charge you MORE to be able to do these peer to peer uploads!
I mean, if I store the video, and its my bandwidth that sends it out, then what am I paying for, the flag letting my software do it? If anything it should be a 1 time fee for the upgrade, not a license! - drakino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The nice thing about the ReplayTV lawsuit was that the restrictions only applied to future units. So any 4500 or 5000 unit can still send shows over the internet, and also skip commercials automatically. The 5500 was just a 5000 box with newer software to turn off the auto commercial skip and internet sharing. The commercial skip code still runs though, allowing users to just hit the right cursor button once to skip the entire commercial break. Odds are the internet code is also all there, just dormant.
- yakk0dotorg, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6I pay $12.95 for one Tivo, and $6.95 for my other one.
- doodlebumm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I recently purchased a DVD player that also plays avi's and other formats off of a USB drive (thumb or disk). I don't have to do anything to the files that I've obtained on the Internet to watch them on my TV. All I have to do is have them on a USB drive and plug it in. I then browse to the file I want to watch and Voila! I have recently caught up with a couple of shows that I got behind on by using the downloaded version on my DVD player. Truly worth the $60 I spent on the player (and it is progressive scan, with upscaling to HDTV formats -720P and 1080i- with an HDMI output). TiVo is nice, but there are some good, less expensive alternatives to their service.
- VipeNess, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4i only pay 6.95 a month for my tivo. i dont know why mine is so cheap.
- Dmtalon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I love my Tivos (Series 2 with a 120gig HDD and Directv HDTivo), however I will likely never give them any additional money for increased services unless they are just flat out amazing, which this is not. I paid for the HMO (One time $99 fee) only to have Tivo start giving it away free months later. My guess/hope would be that they follow previous techniques by charging early adopters, and then letting everyone else eventually have it for free. I can eventually see me with a S3 Tivo, but not at current market prices.
- scotus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"TiVo is offering a breakthrough new service feature which will provide friends and families scattered across the country with an easy way to share their home videos, by sending them directly to the television set."
nice, so along with home videos you can probably share shows you download via bittorrent, but not the ones you record on TiVo. The incentives seem so backwards. why would i pay $4 a month for this feature? i like TiVo but they either have no imagination or are way too hamstrung by copyright interests to be viable. - crawfishsoul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2But hey, at least we can see the caller ID on our TV's. I'm getting my DirecTV HD DVR installed Thursday after a month and a half on the waiting list. We'll see if it was worth the wait.
- Denver80203, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Got ya all beat! Lifetime Membership. Just paid 200$ to transfer it to my series 3 but, it pays for itself after less than a year
- info, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2For example, Philips DVP5960... $80 on Amazon.
;-) - geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"First, you'll be able to use the TiVo Desktop software to convert and transfer Internet video to your TiVo."
And now it's time for TiVo to be acquired by Google. They just closed the deal on GooTube, this is the perfect mechanism for delivering that content, and even gives Google Ads a new home. - skor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Download your shows from iTunes and watch them where? On you Ipod? No thanks..
- BLKMGK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Bingo! Copyright interests FTW! They got to watch ReplayTV go down in flames trying to defend their commercial skip technology and the landscape has only gotten about 10X worse since then. How anyone manages to "innovate" in an environment where the slightest misstep can have your company sued into oblivian is beyond me. Tivo is tied in knots and it SUX!
- Lynxpro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Great announcements, but they really need to announce a return to the lifetime service fee option, and a price reduction for the Series3 units.
Personally, I want to see Apple and Google acquire TiVo and administer it as a joint-venture. - kyote, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@jarek91: How did you do that? Will it screw up my DirectTV in anyway?
- btgoss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I am wondering if we can have this back as a standard feature on our ReplayTV units?
- kyote, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@spectrox: That's because DirecTV wants you to upgrade to their DVR. The problem is, it's not really an upgrade. Their DVR has less features then Tivo. I've talked to reps over there who admitted it because they had Tivo at home as well.
- skor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Tivo doesn't create your guide data, they get it from another company. Gemstar, I think.
- kyote, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It probably won't do me any good. I have a DirecTivo. :(
- babakshirazi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1
Yeah, I have DirecTV Tivo too. I must say that Tivo is much better than any of the cable company or the direct tv pvr crap.
But DirectTv will only support Tivo for a few more years. DirectTV will lose me as a customer when that happens. - zbeast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's interesting but not a feature I would pay money for.
I share videos with friend already Rss feeds and torrents. - BLKMGK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@kyote
Time to look into the TIVO Zipper :-) Hacked my box, hacked my friend's box, and have a few others scheduled too. When DTV drops support for the TIVO, such as it is, or I go HD I'll be dropping DTV. Mine has been hacked for years in various ways and I switched from DISH to get TIVO, they still call me asking why and claiming their crap is as good as TIVO - riiiight. Done right you can extract video from your DTIVO too to burn to DVD or save off for friends. A real shame DTV and TIVO can't seem to get it right on their own...
Also when you're ready to REALLY learn about hacking a TIVO go lookup Dealdatabase.com but read before you post or get flamed bigtime. - juicygossip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1well if that happens, i will try it.
- BigT4187, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@doodlebumm
What kind of DVD player will play from a USB drive? Make and model, please??? - BLKMGK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Play downloaded shows? Sure, my Linktheater can do that but these days I use a hacked XBOX. Cheap as dirt on EBAY and with XBMC it'll play darn near anything you want including MP3s and ripped games. While you're at it you can get local weather off the 'net too! Good stuff and when the 360 can finally play unsigned code I'll buy one, don't want silly pirated games - want a Hi-Def capable media center for cheap :-)
- nicepants, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you read the actual press release you discover that the "sharing" feature is quite restrictive.
"Allows Home Movies to Be Sent over the Internet "
They're not letting you share TV shows or movies, just home videos. - XenophobicAlien, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hey look the block button!
HAHAHA! - Brigadier, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just curious, but is it better to buy & pay monthly for a TiVo you have to hack than just setting up a MythTV box? I'm not asking about TiVo vs Myth but about Hacked TiVo vs Myth. It seems like you're doing the work and paying extra...
- BLKMGK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hack it, become acquainted with "Zipper". Don't know if these new features will work with it but you will get access to most of the other features including Tivo to Tivo transfers if both are hacked.
- crawfishsoul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Re: BLKMGK's reference to dealdatabase.com, use this direct link.
http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/
The root of the site is a convoluted, spammy looking page but the forums look promising. - macslut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Am I the only one who has been downloading bittorrents from my Mac to my TiVo? I've been doing this for some time now without a hack, just RemoteDesktop for the Mac (from TiVo) and VisualHub (or QuickTime player) to convert to theTiVo spec.
- redthumb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@spectrox
DirecTV knows their customers want these features, but they're having to protect the distribution so they won't get sued by the content providers. ReplayTV was open and got sued big time. - Brigadier, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I dunno, sounds like a walled garden version of something that already exists and has been done well. If it weren't for everyone knowing what bit torrent & p2p are then Tivo would have to explain a whole lot more to get people to understand what's going on.
- nicepants, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My guess is a portion of the higher monthly fees are going to the media conglomerates who would otherwise oppose the sharing of content.
- babakshirazi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I have two tivos, but no more for me until they support Mac. Tivo will not be around much longer anyways. You can download most shows in iTunes.
- Pulse_Instance, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What is the brand and model of this incredible player? I use my xbox running xbmc to do all of that but this would be great for other people in my family.
- adampolselli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yet again, customers with Macs get screwed outta new features.
- doodlebumm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Mine is the same as "info", the Philips DVP5960. I got it for $60 after rebate from Circuit City. The downloaded videos look very good and it plays several different formats. You can find out more about it from http://www.divx.com/. You just plug your drive into the USB connector and tell it to look at the USB drive. You then select the file from the "browser" and it will play. Best way to watch the videos that you get off the internet. The DVD player has progressive scan and upconverts to 720p or 1080i and has an HDMI output. Don't buy HDMI cables at Circuit City or other stores like that (where they are $120). You can get them for $6 to $8 on the Internet at a couple of places.
This is one of the great home entertainment purchases I've made. So far (3 weeks now) it has been phenomenal. - cooldimens, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What is TiVoToGo?
"Watch any show, anywhere you go".
Now, there's way to take TiVo along for the ride. It's called TiVoToGo, and it's an easy way to send TV programs to a computer or laptop, or transfer a personal playlist of videos to your handheld device. Just download the TiVoToGo software and start carrying around the shows you've already recorded to your TiVo box. You can even set the TiVoToGo software to search overnight the new episodes and automatically load them into your portable player by morning. It's that simple.
1. How to convert .tivo to AVI, MPEG?
2. How to convert .ty to AVI, MPEG?
Read here:

- babakshirazi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1
Yeah, no *****. Tivo To Go for Mac. DirectTv will stop supporting Tivo and no Mac support from Tivo.......so....time to ***** Tivo for me. - themacjedi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm betting money that the free TV downloads won't be able to skip commercials.
- LegendarySock, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I don't have one.
I live in Canada. -
