- wazzzup, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Whatever. Beta pictures leaked is just marketing hype nowadays. I'm sure it's cool and all but we're just falling for some marketing droid's planned "leak".
- SenorFrog21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2people who say tivo sucks = don't have a tivo.
people who say tivo rules = have a tivo.
it's really quite simple. - Spazkake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1very cool!
- sandraprinsloo1, on 04/20/2009, -0/+1It amazes me what you can do and find on the internet, I love it!
http://ftpredators.com - terafunker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I really like the idea of getting podcasts (esp. vidcasts) right there on the TiVo!
- Paradox183, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1> "I have seen many different HTPC's and honestly none have the ease of use that the TiVo has in both features and price."
In June I bought an HP computer with XP Media Center 2005 on it for about $500 after rebates from Office Depot. That is pretty comparable to buying a Tivo with a lifetime subscription. After just a week of using it, I cancelled my Tivo subscription and haven't looked back.
The benefit to having a Windows- or Linux-based PVR is that you can customize it without jumping through all the ridiculous Tivo hoops (having to hack the box, etc). I added a dual-tuner card to this computer, and after the reboot it became IMMEDIATELY better than any standalone Tivo I ever owned. Game, set, match. Other feature breakdowns are as follows:
ADVANTAGE MCE:
- Expandability, both hardware- and software-wise. Software add-ons are easy to install. The number of tuners you can install is only limited by the number of PCI slots and USB ports you have.
- Networking. Since MCE is a superset of XP Pro, it not only comes with all of XP's networking capabilities but also with the ability to Remote Desktop to the machine. I also connected the HP with my normal desktop using a crossover Ethernet cable, and without any special software (e.g. Tivo Desktop, TivoToGo) I can transfer shows to my desktop at 100mbps.
- Power management. The computer will stay on while recording, while you are watching live/recorded TV or a DVD, and while listening to music. But it will go into standby when it is not doing any of these things.
- Monthly cost. MCE is free.
ADVANTAGE TIVO:
- Auto-rewind while fast-forwarding. One of only two Tivo features I miss. However, 30-second skip works just as well.
- Suggestions. Personally, I never used these because I never bothered with the thumb ratings, but I know plenty of other people like it.
- Grouping recorded shows in the show list. The other feature I miss.
- Initial cost. MCE computers aren't cheap, but you get what you pay for, and save money on monthly fees.
PUSH:
- Interface. Both have the "trick play" bar while watching shows, and MCE has it for DVDs as well. I actually like MCE's interface better because it looks cleaner and doesn't do all that cutesy sliding animated crap.
- Recording quality, although that probably has a lot to do with the capture card itself. I'm using a Hauppauge.
- Program guide and online scheduling. Setting up online scheduling capabilities is not obvious (I had to hit Google for instructions), but when ready, it actually responds faster than Tivo Central Online.
- DVD recording. I never owned a Tivo that had a DVD burner, but I imagine this computer works just as well. Couldn't be easier.
- Other Tivo features. The MCE equivalent of Season Pass (the most important feature of any DVR, IMO) works just as well.
Ever since I sold my Tivo on eBay and cancelled my service, I haven't been keeping up with Tivo news. But if they still haven't announced a dual-tuner standalone unit, they are sorely falling behind. At this point, MCE and other platforms are only getting better. - phoenixdig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"did any of you guys or gals hear about a month ago that tivo was erasing peoples recording off of there tivo's & only letting them keep there recorded shows for only a week & the first thing when I heard this was, what if you go out of town for more then a week, wouldn't that defeat the purpose of having a tivo."
Ghostaliaz this was an accidental occurrence in Tivo's guide data. While TiVo did apologise for the mistake it is obvious that their software does have this feature and they may be introducing this 'feature' in the future which is a concern.
I have seen many different HTPC's and honestly none have the ease of use that the TiVo has in both features and price. I use a TiVo series 1 in Australia and while there are limitations with the Tivo with regards to playback of mpeg4/avi files and playing mp3's I still think it has many great features that most other home made solutions don't have. The major one is Tivo Suggestions where it learns what you like and records similar shows. For playback of other media I just use Xbox Media Centre. Sure I have two devices but I still think the TiVo is a smarter system and much easier to get running than MythTV, Windows Media Center and Freevo.
If it works for you then great there is no need to use a TiVo but for most people building and setting up a HTPC is a very daunting task and can cost considerably more than the TiVo's out of the box solution.
I just wish we could get Series 2 Tivo's working in Australia. But unfortunately the decoding chips haven't been reverse engineered yet so PAL signals are not possible. - Gunnyman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yet another group of features we Directivo owners get screwed out of. THANKS Directv!
Meanwhile I extract video whenever I want with NO DRM. :D - mr804, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1omg every who pay for someting and doesn't run free garbage is an asshat! You should spend all your run screwing with mythtv! -sarcasim
- sTiVo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Those are some seriously long sentences you write there, ghostaliaz :)
- shiftless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Tivo is awesome. Will this have high definition? I'm still hoping...
- ghostaliaz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I am sorry to be a spoiler, but Tivo to me sucks. There is no reason to be paying them once for their (DRM Machine of restrictions & non freedom), then the poor puppies have to pay a monthly payment for nothing as far as I am concerned. I have been building my own HTPC's for about 5 years & it does even more then the (Tivo Sad Machine)& did any of you guys or gals hear about a month ago that tivo was erasing peoples recording off of there tivo's & only letting them keep there recorded shows for only a week & the first thing when I heard this was, what if you go out of town for more then a week, wouldn't that defeat the purpose of having a tivo. Boy sometimes I think these Big Biz Types are either smoking something or they are just really unconnected with the everyday person because these suits never get it right & they just keep trying to put more & more restrictions on living and products that enforce their dumb ideas, I know for one I am not going to buy, plus I do a better job a building my own media center with no rules & I do not do it with Win doze Media(Stop Center) because it sucks just as much as Tivo does.
- murph2481, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Galleon has these features
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0With TiVo doing podcasts, does anyone know how to get your own podcast listed in their directory?
- cpuangel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Under NDA but I'll say, It's not fake.
- mentor972, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Could it be fake?
- skwhirl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A hardware MPEG card (or more) and some good PVR software (like the mythtv) and a good hearty file server on the network beats out TiVo any day in my book
- tfratzke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0While this is cool, alot of this stuff is already available from an app like Galleon. http://galleon.sourceforge.net/html/index.html
- Warsteiner, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1www.mythtv.org
They just ripped off mythtv big time. - gohoos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0SeniorFrog, that has been my experience as well.
Can we, for once, have a TiVo story without someone saying the equivalent of "Well, I can build a box that does everything TiVo does, plus whitens my teeth, all with spare parts!" Mythtv isn't all that. Amazing how many people love mythtv without even trying it.
I have TiVo and Myth. I've used many others. TiVo is the best thing out there right now, period.
If my TiVo broke right now I'd be buying one tonight. Even if it was $1000. It's that good.
Show me where you can build a PVR for $50, hardware included. - Mininday, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"TiVo is starting to look like the Web TV of the 2000's. If Tivo going to survive in today market place. They will need to merge with either with yahoo, google or comcast."
They did merge with Yahoo.....Did you even click on the link? - TVarmy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So, it looks like this only works for people who have their tivo networked. That sucks. I only have one PC, and I can't justify installing a wireless network just for the tivo. I can't really afford or justify a second PC, either. So it looks like schedules via 56k for me.
- tidal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0of course its only for series 2 owners... thanks for shafting us series 1 owners again
- bigdoug2005, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Windows MCE 2005 looks so much better and is a lot cheaper in the long run.
- fugitivALiEN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0looks like maybe tivo snagged all the features galleon has and made it their own... hello micro-tivo ;)
- tfratzke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^^ IMO you're missing one major advantage of TiVo. The actual size of the box is a lot easier to put in an entertainment center than a MCE PC.
- apotropaic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yea i'm with paradox... its such a major deal that tivo is upgrading the software... but us open-source HTPC users can do that whenever we want! And if there aren't any upgrades available we can write our own. I used a tivo for about 6 months... then used a spare computer and spent $90 on a turner and that was it for me. Tivo was outta here. I'm glad I didn't pay for the lifetime subscription. And I don't know if Tivo has this yet, but most HTPC software comes with commercial skipping.
And for the guy who thinks tivo has ease of use... htpc can be configured EXACTLY the way you want them to be. How much easier does it get? Sure you have to take the time to do it... but it better then submitting to the way Tivo says you have to do things. - TheProfessional, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That looks really ugly.
- apotropaic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@tfratzke - not necessarily, check out this site...
http://www.anandtech.com/casecooling/showdoc.aspx?i=2309
sure you have to pay a litle extra for them. I just put mine in the next room or basement. - renfield33, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i have a tive and a myth box. the tivo definietly is easier to get working, and the remote control is more responsive. it's also a nicer form factor. myth's UI is a bit clunky compared to the tivo too. however, i like being able to stream off the myth box. and, since i'm a mac user, tivotogo is a no go for me, which is kind of annoying. i actually would like to get MCE running, i think it would just be more stable. not to mention the fact that it's going to integrate with the xbox360.
- monolith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have a tivo. And I love it. And i HATE it. My family is spoiled by the damn thing and don't understand about the missing features.... No HD... No DRM... others missing wanted features... ugh. Help me!
- raano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You can add podcasts if you know the feed address (like http://leo.am/podcasts/twit). It's a cool service that's long overdue. It might be too little too late.
- MasherSCF, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Call me when they have video. Audio isn't such a big deal. All you have to do is have your podcasts in MP3 to already play them on TiVo.
It'll be nice for gramma though. - siouxmoux, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0TiVo is starting to look like the Web TV of the 2000's. If Tivo going to survive in today market place. They will need to merge with either with yahoo, google or comcast.
- Toallpointswest, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0After reading about TiVO's horrid license policies and hidden software "features" (like being able to delete your recorded shows without asking you). I'll be building my own PVR's, thank you.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1cool

- gamerzworld, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0where is the DRM disclamer?
- EmileVictor, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1TiVo will have a DRM?
