- 0Troy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Dear sir, STOP
Please consider for your consumption our amazing formula! STOP
With it you will be able to grow your pen-fifteen to outragous lengths! STOP
If you do not wish to recieve these telegrams in the future, please tell us to stop STOP - Derbigny5, on 12/04/2007, -0/+1This article was interesting to read, especially after C1C Fisher's briefing at the USAF Academy. At first I thought SPAM didn't come about until the early nineties. However, the word actually came from the food. So many people were eating spam, especially the military, so the term Spamming the conversation arouse. Soon, we started calling unwanted emails the same thing.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If that's real, the one responsible for it needs to be drawn and quartered, amidst much rejoicing.
Scene in Hell:
Random condemned soul: "So, what are you in here for?"
Spammer: "Well, I invented Internet spamming..."
The Devil: "That was YOU?! Come with me to the 7th circle..." - Noah0504, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I dugg it, but let's not make the claim that it was the first spam email ever sent. It's impossible to do so.

&old - savingaurora, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0thanks alot for starting it all :D
i'm with jph. on this one - JPhilipson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hmmm...he should be hung and publicly humiliated...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0B#@ch
Now if only I had a time machine to go back and stop it from happening....
Wait, but then if i stopped him, I would never have known about spam, and would't have gone back in time, but then there would be spam, and i would have gone back to stop him, and AGHHHH!!!! Paradox!
That is early though - geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Literally old news ;)

TAKE ME OFFA LIST - LordofChaosIori, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Man I hate spam emails. That person should be shot in the arms and legs, then have his fingers cut off and then burned alive and put out just before he died, then he should be thrown into the sand where ants eat him from the inside out. :)
- halfgenius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Bastard!!
- panique, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0WOOOHOOOO! I remember TOPS-20
- Rice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If I got that email, the first spam email I'd be like.
"What the hell is this? But, it must be legit." - greekgoat91, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that is depressing
- teh_toaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now the spam bots can try to harvest the page and try to spam those addresses into the 21st century
- NewEvolution, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I dunno which is funnier. The address overflow or the all-caps message.
- jaredvolkl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would never have guessed that early.
- amprancid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would have happened anyway. Viral marketing has been around forever.
- Nesbitt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes, but will this spam make my penis any larger?
- SuperMoonMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ironically, I read this story once. It was forwarded to me by someone I didn't know. I was young and silly enough to open emails like that...
- dkarlson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dugg, but only because of the ridiculously long domain name and hideously ugly header graphic.
Interesting piece of history, too. - SuperMoonMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Possibly more impressive than the story itself is the fact that the submitter appears to be of the female gender. That's like..impossible - for Digg, at least.
- outerspaceapple, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hahaha

This is the first Usenet spam message, originally widely posted on March 5, 1994. It caused an uproar and is largely regarded as the beginning of spam as we know it today.
I read about it in Time Magazine during the summer of 1994 while on a Motorcycle trip, before my first year of university. And that's how I discovered the internet (I was a BBS geek in the 80s and early 90s, but this was the first I had heard of the internet) - JoJoDilio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0whoops... nevermind. there's no D.
- JoJoDilio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hmm... wasn't it called DARPANET (With a D)?
- surtin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0jphilipson said "Hmmm...he should be hung and publicly humiliated..."
I think a tarring and feathering would definitely be in order for this guy.
Dugg for history though. - levyjl1988, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Hmmm...he should be hung and publicly humiliated...

I so agree with you, now I do know who to blame! - scorpio10, on 02/20/2009, -0/+0Wow..dates back to 1978...interesting article.
- icurnvs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm thinkin SPAM would have been around even if this guy happened to accidentally fall off a cliff and die a horribly painful death before he could get his message out...
- kerpau, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Bob Metcalfe's e-mail address is on the list. Cool!
- laughterkillsme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Precursor to this submitted story huh?
- GhostFreeman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0DEC, Always the innovator!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That wasn't spam, just a mass email.
- Reddog_x2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Interesting from a historical perspective. The senders should still be banned from going near a computer or having anyone go near a computer for them.
- jeffreym, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Big deal. Wake me up when you write about the LAST spam email.
http://celestial-reasoning.blogspot.com/ - twollamalove, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0son of a bitch
- mrinternet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually this wasn't really 'spam'. Spam didn't actually happen until the post python sketch around 1990. Have a peek.

An UNSOLICITED, mass email for COMMERCIAL PURPOSES. If that's not the textbook definition of email spam, what is? - TimmyGUNZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I still don't consider this Spam. It's not like they were selling penis enlargement pills or something like that. It was for an event more that they were trying to get people to attend. Yes, I guess if you're going to use the textbook definition of Spam, than you can try and call it that, but this gave me the my first use of the good 'ol "Inaccurate" feature! :)

Funny Stuff...I think. - boardo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So Digital was evil afterall eh...
- jtown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The one I remember was the green card spam. That and "I'd like to make this folder into" messages that littered usenet when AOL introduced it to their members. Same timeframe.
- diggAddict, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I thought that the GREEN CARD LAWYERS spam was the first real internet wide spam back around in 1995?
I dont see this as valid spam as the internet was not even the size it was in 1995 which had a much more devestating effect than in the 1970s. - 4815162342, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0who cares?
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Dupe.

What is Digg?
