Anyway, I work for eBay, and this is the TRUE story -Pierre went to register the name EchoBay for the auction site (which yes, was named AuctionWeb). However, since another company in the Bay area had already registered the name of EchoBay, he had to come up with a different name on the spot so he shortened it to eBay.
Nowhere in the history of the site was there an eBay PRIOR to this namechange nor had he already created a site, or company, named EchoBay -it was taken. As to where he got the name EchoBay, they tell us that he just liked it.
Also, contrary to popular belief, Pierre did not make his millions off of eBay, he was already filthy rich from a few previous endeavors.

- WillyCornbread, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Ebay sucks. It's full of scammers and folks operating a full-fledged business from there. You can't rely on feedback because of the rampant rigging and recipricol scams. EBay doesn't give a ***** as long as they make their cut.
Look at the Xbox 360 debacle with all the scams from both sellers and buyers. It's just a glimpse at the seediness and trash that thrive there.
Great idea crushed by it's own critical mass.
