- coldcamping555, on 10/12/2007, -6/+34Did u not notice that it was up at least 2 weeks ago
- treelovinhippie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+27I don't think the "TWiT" is big enough :)
- SonofMaug, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25I'm sorry lostngone, does the fact that he puts out almost 12 podcasts FOR FREE really chafe you? Would you prefer he didn't take sponsors and charge YOU for the ***** content? Be real people, he has had a sponsor since the beginning; AOL. AOL has been providing his bandwidth since the inception of the TWiT podcast. The whole donation thing on the forums ain't great, and I'm not going to pay just to comment, but as for the sponsors, you need to get real.
- titchard, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17Don't you think that TWIT has got that huge he didn't really have any other option but to have sponsors and adverts?
I don't mind myself, he managed to ward off adverts for over a year or so, and commend him for doing so!
Server costs, bandwidth and such don't come cheap! (I should know! I just forked out £100 for 3 months of web hosting and podcast hosting and we are no where near the size of TWIT!)
You should see how much TWIT costs to run, before you you go shooting your mouth about "selling out"
Rich - nicko68, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I don't know about Dell, but Leo still talks about AOL when they screw up, even though they're providing the bandwidth. Besides, do we really need to keep hearing about exploding Dells every day?
- spoozer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14that hoodie doesn't look good on anyone...
looks like something an airport runway worker would wear - MikeCerm, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16Not only is there only one product, it's not particularly attractive, and it's actually bordering on offensive. I certainly wouldn't want to be seen by anyone who doesn't know what "TWiT" is.
I think it's safe to assume that the current store is basically just a placeholder for a better store to come. - Jonny5alive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Why doesn't it use the TWiT font?
- ndm007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10They have more items on the "non-ofifcial" store:
http://www.geekculture.com/geekculturestore/webstore/TWiT.html - rodrigo74, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I'll take the liberty to post here what Leo Laporte himself posted in the TWiT forums, regarding the ads:
"I don't know how many times I have to say this. Ads do not sustain us yet. Not even close. If the donations dry up, so does TWiT.
It's kind of like a magazine. Your donation pays for the infrastructure: hosting, bandwidth, rent, and equipment.
ALL ad revenue will go to paying the hosts, who up to now have been working for free. Unlike a magazine we don't require a subscription. 98% of our listeners do not, in fact, pay a penny.
For those who do (and that's everyone reading this), thanks SO much. Your $2/month keeps TWiT on the air!" - azzageddi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Circumstances change, lostngone. If you don't like it, don't listen to the podcast. Personally, I think promising never to take ads (if that is indeed exactly what Leo said) was a mistake, but it's best to correct one's mistakes and move forward. He's keeping the advertising tasteful and reasonably unobtrusive--handles it like an old-time radio announcer--so I don't mind a bit. I'm just glad my favorite podcast can start making a little money.
- KnightMareInc, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11@lostngone
you're right they havent made fun of the dell battery thing at all  - rodrigo74, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6digg cut my text in the middle of the edit, so here are my opinion about it: I don't mind sending the guy 2 bucks a months in exchange for all the GREAT content he puts online almost on a daily basis. I don't care if he uses this money to pay servers, bandwidth or a new pair of socks, hell, if I COULD choose, I'd ask him to spend my money on some beers instead!
He doesn't push for donations (I don't remember the last time he asked for it during the podcasts), he doesn't limit the non-paying listeners on any way, I don't think it could get more fair and nice than that, sincerely. - mgorbsky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Probably because it's not an officially licensed product. Look at the domain it's on... http://www.promovilleshop.com/
Something about this looks fishy. My guess is someone designed a hoody and is trying to pass it off as official TWiT merch. - kitchen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5that was my first thought as well, but the twit.tv website links to it... really I must say I'm really not impressed. they could have set a up cafepress shop in a few minutes with better merch :|
- Pooley, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Wow. It doesn't have the TwiT logo and it's not in the TWiT font.
I'll pass. - nicko68, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4He explained it. The donations cover equipment costs, the advertising covers paying the hosts. He made an excellent analogy... magazines. Aren't you offended that magazines advertise even though they charge you a subscription? What about TV? Shouldn't the fact we pay subscription fees to our cable or satellite providers make them commercial free? In fact, I remember being promised that "Pay TV" would result in no (or less) ads back in the day.
Leo shouldn't have made that promise, but cut him some slack. People are still figuring out how these podcasts will work. And I"m not offended that he is trying to put food on the table while doing something he loves to do. - aznboi04k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4i am sorry but that's a UGLY hoodie. i would never wear that. then again, i am not a hardcore geek.
- .mark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Eh, that's nice and everything, but I cannot imagine how many double-looks you'd get with that sweatshirt and people thinking it says "*****"...
Just sayin'... - xioner, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Personally, I don't mind the ads. They are still less intrusive than those "sponsorship" announcements on NPR, and (thus far) there have been no irritating 2 week long fund drives. Ah! Perhaps thats the way to go. Imagine it: two episodes of TWiT per year would consist of short "best of" clips interspersed with Dvorak and Patrick fighting over how much of a donation you have to give to get a TWiT Pin, and which pin is the least Apple-centric. Then Amber could come in and announce how close they are to their fund raising goal, and Leo could make an appeal to everyone, calling them disloyal listeners if they don't rush over to PayPal and send in $5.
Thats it!
Honestly though, they still trash any product they want to, and the second week of sponsorships Dvorak questioned why Visa would even bother to sponsor them, almost went on a rant about their stupidity. (Oh, wait... that was planned. Obviously Dvorak only rants about things when he is paid to do s because it brings attention to the product). - Reliant, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I agree with titchard. Not to mention the fact that people who complain about advertising are the same ones who do not donate to TWIT.TV. You can't run all those shows on a small budget. Plus Leo mentioned a couple weeks back on KFI that he will be doing a couple more vidcasts soon. Leo has good information every week. I have not found reason to moan about any of the shows he has. (Other than maybe Amber leaving CFH).
- Dolomite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3YES! Been waiting a LONG time for this. Glad it's finally here!!!!!!!!!!!
- kitchen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Leo has discussed how their new sponsors will affect how they talk about the companies, and that it will not affect it in any way. If dell ***** up, they're going to call them out on it on the show. Same with visa, same with AOL, hell they'd probably even do it to astaro (who was one of the original sponsors).
I can't remember what episode it was, but he said it's almost as if he now has to go out of his way to talk about the dell/visa/whatever to prove to people that he's not kissing their asses... so please, stfu before you talk about something you have no clue about. - darkamster07, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2cheap hoodie for 40+ bucks!? kinda expensive, most stuff I buy on the net is cheaper
- SLH06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It would better they put This Week in Tech with the T,W,T in a larger font so people would know what it stands for.
- rcomegys, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8ditto
- akuma624, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Man, that store looks freaking weak.
- davetcg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There are portraits on that page just below thge buttons. I recognize Leo and Steve, I think the one girl is Amber MacArthur, and the other is Oprah Winfrey.
- platypibri, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I would think that with a big guy like Chris Di Bona on staff they would AT LEAST have a XXXL for my big a**. Whose marketing to us fat geeks? Huh? I've been to enough geek functions to know we are MIGHTY. 3 and 4 X should be staples of any geek store.
- dylanbenstead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2old news!!!! This has been up for a while
- PrayerNeeder, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5he's excited about getting a shirt that says "twit" across the front. I wouldn't expect him to be too observant...
- Insimbi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4The guy that said it might be "offensive" - give me a break! I'm so tired of everyone being offended by crap - get a life.
- snowdog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2$40 was ok with me, I didn't order one though when I found out that they wanted $125 for shipping - ARE YOU KIDDING?!!!
(sorry about the caps) - jbizzle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1what crap, why are people digging this site?
- wmhunter, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2After they upgraded the site a few months back, this kind of plain page is unacceptable. The home page and other pages look kickass, while I could have coded a better store = P
Good find though, I always catch the security now podcast, and the odd time I'll listen to TWiT - milk93rd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Too late, we've been here for awhile now
- GarethSaxby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2If I was wearing that, I can think of a different vowel that people would use. Almost as nasty as the old design of the TWiT website... What a shame.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Hopefully it's an *internal* project turned placeholder ... and they outsource the real verson. Cause that site sucked.
- ph33, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3No offence to Leo, but the store is looking a bit plain. They could have used Shopify and done some funky things with their Vision design toolkit.
It will be hard to resist the urge to purchase a sweater nonetheless ;) - eMuleDude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1$40 for the privilege of having strangers call you a twit in public. The price seems about right to me. ;)
- slantyeyed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1geez, leo's always been the one to try to hock cheap, trailer trash, found-on-the-boardwalk souvenirs.
- krahzee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A few things from someone in the screen printing industry
Reflective ink is far more expensive than standard ink. (think like 2 to three times as much). It also has to be applied twice to get the desired effect. ) think two coats of white to paint a house that was blue, the first coat you will see some blue bleed through)
Also, sweatshirts are tricky as hell to price. It all is based on ounce weight ( the heavier the ounce weight the warmer it is, but the more $ it costs), as well as hooded vs crew, the added fee for plus sizes ( any size bigger than XL) , and zip downs are always more than pull overs.
I have sold plenty of the the heaviest for around that price, give or take a few dollars. With a zipper, this is a fair price for the heaviest weight. - cfarmer8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just got mine in the mail today and love it... and i still haven't been charged prob email someone at leoville tonight.
- Morphinity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, it would be nice if it was more than a hoodie that said 'TWiT'. I could have made that in my basement... I am waiting for hats!
- osbjmg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1***** did you say?
- rodrigo74, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I think Leo should hire a pro to design some nice, properly branded TWiT goodies. Considering the big following he got, he could make some good money out of it, I guess.
- KAMI_no_kodomo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@lostngone
Please if you remember something remember it right.
Leo Has told he didn't wanted any sponsor because it would affect the show and they would tell him what to do.
Now Leo wants to go really full time with his podcasts. And he is already almost fulltime.
Somehow he needs money so he can eat and his kids can go to school.
Also they are now so big that Leo can say to the sponsors: Sorry, screw you, you screwed it up, I tell it. And even if they quit it will not be a problem. And I'm sure he will do it if its needed.
They already told on Security Now! about an important security feature they discussed Leo: 'Is this in Astero' Steve: 'I have no idea, I hope so'
Also hey they got AOL as sponsor from the start. Did they even not tell when they screwed up.
Also. Hey yes dell had a laptop exploding.
1) They told the story.
2) They follow the story.
They don't need to tell it over and over and over again. Or every twit would take 20 hours of 'and that bug we told you 2 weeks again, its still in vista, and that other bug in IE, its still there, ...' - bloodmoney, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Twit used to be the name of a local gay and lesbian magazine in Houston
- shanmac, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Lets get things straight. Leo did say many times that he wouldn't take advertising (only donations). So, he did in essence go back on his word. I'll forgive him for that. However, I can't understand the Dell thing. Leo has always been a die hard Mac user - and now he is promoting underpowered Dell systems, WTF? Sorry, but that goes a little too far.
