- spargo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26I don't think anyone can beat Google at this time. Google has an enormous and dedicated user base. New search companies would have to offer something pretty phenomenal to take people away from their current picks for search providers and, let's face it, Google gives you search results. What more do you want from a search? I don't want clutter, I want results and that is what Google gives.
- DiggsOnlyNeoCon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Yes, but does anyone else have a ball pit that employees can play in at work?
- lcohiomatty86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6this is a good thing though that there are companies trying to compete with google...
remember, that it was competition from gmail that caused MSN and yahoo to see the light of day and give us more than 4mb of email space.. thanks to competition now 200-2000 mb's is easy to obtain for free. - soogy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7What a useless article. Google is a company that provides many services. The "alternatives" mentioned often provide very different services, such as Technorati.
- Darmichar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I use Google instead of competing search engines for several reasons.
If I don't want all the extra little frills showing up on the initial search page, I don't have to see them.
Never once have I noticed a Google ad on *their* pages that annoyed or distracted me.
They have always been upfront about the data they were collecting, and what they were doing with it.
Until something leaps and bounds better comes along, which I don't see happening in the near future, I will continue to use Google. - RemoteSojourner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Useless guides. They all are houswives sitting at home in Ohio.
- jstone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2In my opinion, clusty is the best search engine out there at the moment. It provides relevant results, and having the results clustered by category is a really useful feature.
- drewolanoff, on 06/10/2008, -0/+2They never find anything for me :(

Google competition = better Google and still nobody caring about the competition. I like it! - teesa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think this article is useless because it seems to have put search engines in haphazard categories (especially in clustering). Clusty and Searchmash are entirely different. Clusty is intelligent and clusters results together to help users refine their searches but Searchmash categories different types of content (images, etc). Two entirely different technologies
- UnoriginalMind, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Beat Google....
Why? - Raveren, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Google has (juridically) forbidden the use of "google" as a verb actually :]
- superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Beat Google - to what?
They are an expanding sphere of products, ever increasing in number (a few recent closures notwithstanding). It's like trying to beat the ocean. It is as pointless as it is hopeless.
The only way to "win" is to stake out some spot and hope that either Google does not expand in that direction, or that Google someday makes enough missteps to start receding. - RemoteSojourner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Search mash should beat google..lol that way its still google
- MegStiers, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Google is now a verb. Oh, can't find something? Just "Google It".... Can't beat a search engine that's become a part of our vocab now.
- nayajhen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Has anyone tried Ask.com? I mean they make some good *****!
- mwilley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes, I love that Google supports Firefox, but I have to agree that Windows Live has better UI. Google has always (or at least as long as I have used it) had a bland white background with an ugly google logo at the top. And Live's picture search is very usable and looks great. Yet, I am still loyal to Google...
- Tetraca, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Clusty or Vivissimo are probably the best search engines outside of google because clustering removes most of the results I never wanted.
- letemendia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A snapshot on the short term future of search. This is just the beginning...
- retsoced, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Lame. It's more like a list of the most retarded company names on the web.
- sint4x, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1haha I hardly consider Live Search to have a "better UI"
A good UI is easy to use not just slower and with more eye candy. - Corbomight, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3bury
- nubnub, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Windows Live has better UI than Google? I think not. Plus Google supports Firefox
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I think Digg should be added to that graphic. I often use it for searching things.
- madmike759, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Google is the best what makes it so good i have no idea.....maybe they put those hidden messages that make us come back
- klept, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1@ spargo
I agree. Google is very good. I am a big google fan and use many of their apps and have beta tested some of their new features.
That said, Google search does not always give me what I need / want. And I have to find the information by alternartive searching. However, if I try to use another search engine, like Yahoo, when google doesnt deliver, the search results are even worse. - And yes I know one time yahoo used google's search technl, but my understanding is they are using a different search technology now. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3chacha.com can be fun if u search with a guide lol. Great for some pranks =)
- drewolanoff, on 06/10/2008, -5/+2It's definitely all about the vertical in '07.
- Morky, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Beat Google? Good. *****. Luck. Even if you have a better product.
- idiggeverything, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Google owns.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2google wannabes
- jerryparid, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Bloat, Chinese Baidu.com!
- baxtermaddux, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3if google cruhes microsoft the way Borat crushes his wives, they will have my loyalty forever.
