torrentfreak.com — Today, exactly two years have passed since The Pirate Bay was raided by the Swedish police. Unlike Hollywood would have wanted, the worlds largest BitTorrent tracker now more popular than ever, and they are here to stay.

      Still, in the long run it's most likely has a damaging effect on game makers and atrists.

      Sure, the existing artists are rich, but by taking money out of the system, you kill the chances of new artists and movies and music stop progressing and cultural focus goes to Europe or India.

      American's two biggest strenght are culture and technology.
      We are the biggest internet population in America.

      We are most stealing from ourselves, but at the same time global piracy download are skyrocketing.

      It's all good when you get a free copy of XP, but DAMN if those chinese should circumvent our tax revenue.

      At some point, we'll be losing more in tax revenue then we are saving by mass stealing.

      SOooooo if I were you guys. I would prepare for a future will less mainstream piracy. They will filter P2P out eventually.

For example, what if the Pirate Bay completely ripped digg off and put up a site called "Digg" with the exact same layout and everything else. People on this site would be screaming bloody-murder. But, downloading a movie or a song, which have the same copyright protections is perfectly acceptable and should be considered a right.

If the artist was getting 90-100% of the money I paid for a cd or a dvd I would gladly pay the price. But paying $20 for a cd in which the artist only receives pennies on the dollar is just plain ludicrous.

        • solid12345, on 06/01/2008, -1/+4There is a reason these large record companies exist, artists get charged pennies on the dollar because the money goes to fund large advertising bills and studio equipment. There is more to putting out a platinum album than 4 guys in a studio.

          And who are you to say pennies on the dollar is ridiculous? The company I work for, we get .5% share of profits for streaming live auctions online. On paper .5% sounds ridiculous, but if you consider we auction off multi-million dollar items the profit adds up, but alot of it goes to pay mine and other employee's salary.

        • omelette, on 06/01/2008, -0/+3While I'll admit that stealing is wrong, my issue lies in that I have yet to be convinced that acquiring media through means other than RIAA approved methods IS, in fact, stealing. Sure, I wouldn't steal a CD from Wal-Mart's shelves. At some point in my life I was actually convinced that this was wrong. It makes sense to me that taking an item from someone's inventory, an item that they paid for and that they would now have to write off, is wrong. You know, even in a case where, say, a hack existed to download tracks from iTunes without paying... I would consider THAT stealing. They've gone through the trouble to find, house, index, and maintain the media... they deserve their due. But I also can't be convinced that instead of actually buying music, I'm signing up for some kind of license to listen to it in some specific manner rather than owning it outright which includes the right to pass it on to people I think would enjoy it. Just writing this out, I think I've stumbled on the real reason why I don't think sharing media is stealing. The only person it's taking something from is a group of people who add ZERO discernible value to the music industry. I need to be convinced why they deserve payment. I understand why an artist needs payment, I understand why the maintainer of the media needs payment. I DON"T understand who else needs to be in the mix or where they get off expecting me to give them money. I thought AllofMP3.com was the perfect scenario - everyone who I felt was contributing to the product I wanted, was getting paid (I understand the RIAA never accepted the money collected for the artists, but it WAS there).

          Back on point though, the fact remains: illegal does not always equal wrong. Your comment, "Stealing is wrong" is just a distraction. Sure, stealing is wrong - convince me that sharing media is stealing.

        What scares me is people don't seem to understand what stealing is anymore. I am a tech and I have people coming in with their PCs my grandparents age, wanting to know what program to use to download music, and I tell them that it is stealing and they had no idea. That is what I find scary

      As a person about to enter the media with an intellectual product, my hope is that people enjoy my work enough to purchase it and my fear is that someone might try to rip it off and sell it as their own. Piracy on the other hand doesn't seem to even get a care out of me. Why? Because the people who are pirating it probably wouldn't have bought it anyway, at least them getting it for free gets me exposure and might get a few extra fans along the way.

In fact I think it levels the playing field in the information society for people like me that make ~10,000/year. I'll start crying a river of tears when I see an Adobe lead developer, manager, or major stock holder living under a bridge. The cost I am willing to pay for electronic media is $0. I don't care about taking revenue away from people because there will always be some people who will pay. Even if nobody does pay I still don't care as I have no real regrets about openly stealing media. It is theft but whatever I just don't care about stealing things.

When Radiohead released In Rainbows I actually paid for it instead of opting to get it for free. Getting a friend to go to the concert is easier if they have the CD already, and bands make ***** more off merch and tickets than they do off of CD sales. If you can sell one more tshirt by distrubting burned CDs, you still made the artist about 10 times as much money as if every single one of those CDs was paid for without any merch sales.

The idea is to take someone's idea and build upon it. With the way things work now it's pretty hard to do even that. Not to mention the moment you even think of a new idea someone probably already patented the idea and has been squatting on it for a while. I don't need to pretend that it's vaguely, slightly, or even possibly right. I know it's right. Which is why in science the method is similar, you take someone's work and build off of it.

        • richardwatson, on 06/02/2008, -0/+0There is more than one cost associated with music. Personally I'd prefer to feel good that I'm supporting a musician. The music *business* as it is can die screaming, but paying musicians for music helps them make more.

          Same as e-books. Many buy them even though they could just be copied indefinitely. Some people don't mind paying because they appreciate the effort of the author and don't want to feel like they stole it.

      There is skill involved in playing any instrument. Somethings are very simple that within a week of playing you can play it but then there are things that take a few years to master. There is also the creativity involved.

      Laziness is self explain. People are too lazy to learn how to play the music they want to hear, they just want to kick back and relax.
