The Pirate Bay: Two Years After the Raid
torrentfreak.com — Today, exactly two years have passed since The Pirate Bay was raided by the Swedish police. Unlike Hollywood would have wanted, the worlds largest BitTorrent tracker now more popular than ever, and they are here to stay.

If you like fascist millionaires as heroes, sure. "Is the Pirate Bay a front for right wing extremists in Sweden? Yesterday our Epicenter blog, linked to an interesting YouTube video in which Tobias Andersson of The Pirate Bay if asked to defend the site against charges that Carl Lundstrom, former CEO of Rix Telecom and “well-known right-wing extremist in Sweden,” funded the early development of the site.
And, given the amount of credibility the Pirate Bay has among many internet users for its supposedly “anarchist” and populist leanings, I'm surprised its normally outspoken founders haven't responded to these charges."- lotsa1s, on 06/01/2008, -1/+4They're not responding because its the equivalent of accusing a Zionist Jew of being a Holocaust denier.
- cliffski, on 06/02/2008, -0/+1no, because they know its truth. As do the digg kiddies, which is why they digg this down hoping that nobody will find out.

We really shouldn't be waving this in the face of society.
There is no logical argument that media and application should all be free.
It's just like drugs.. you can't stop people, so .. sell them 'tobacco waterpipes'.
They can't stop downloads, so they sell us bandwidth and computers and portable media players.
Still, in the long run it's most likely has a damaging effect on game makers and atrists.
You may say.. THEY ARE RICH.. those bastards can afford it.
Sure, the existing artists are rich, but by taking money out of the system, you kill the chances of new artists and movies and music stop progressing and cultural focus goes to Europe or India.
American's two biggest strenght are culture and technology.
We are the biggest internet population in America.
We are most stealing from ourselves, but at the same time global piracy download are skyrocketing.
It's all good when you get a free copy of XP, but DAMN if those chinese should circumvent our tax revenue.
At some point, we'll be losing more in tax revenue then we are saving by mass stealing.

- ubercow13, on 06/01/2008, -1/+0In my book that's an unrealistic target as not everyone can have a 1.5 ratio in a swarm.
- mrpleco, on 06/01/2008, -0/+1Right, but to compensate for the hit-and-runners, then to help people not have to seed forever, if you seed 1.5x then that keeps the swarm healthy. Besides, if you choose your download location when you download, what does it hurt to keep your torrent seeding?
If you like it SEED.- ubercow13, on 06/01/2008, -1/+0I do seed plenty, it's just an unreachable ideal, sometimes 1.5 is realistic, sometimes seeding to less or more is better.
- Tenoq, on 06/02/2008, -0/+1My ISP disconnects me if I upload more than I download. So it does hurt to seed. :p

- Turbojugend27, on 06/01/2008, -23/+48ok I don't want to sound like a party pooper, but how does the Pirate Bay represent freedom? Everything on there is illegal, plain and simple. I use it myself. but I also realize that my actions are criminal and what is scary is that nobody realizes what they do now is illegal.
I dunno, I just find that scary- reed311, on 06/01/2008, -9/+35Yeah, it's funny that people on here really don't have much respect to copyright unless it's certain situations. For example, what if the Pirate Bay completely ripped digg off and put up a site called "Digg" with the exact same layout and everything else. People on this site would be screaming bloody-murder. But, downloading a movie or a song, which have the same copyright protections is perfectly acceptable and should be considered a right.
- tMANwi, on 06/01/2008, -8/+12Considering it is the large corporations that are getting all the profits from the movie/music sales I don't consider my actions illegal or immoral at all. If the artist was getting 90-100% of the money I paid for a cd or a dvd I would gladly pay the price. But paying $20 for a cd in which the artist only receives pennies on the dollar is just plain ludicrous.
TPB FTW- solid12345, on 06/01/2008, -1/+4There is a reason these large record companies exist, artists get charged pennies on the dollar because the money goes to fund large advertising bills and studio equipment. There is more to putting out a platinum album than 4 guys in a studio.
And who are you to say pennies on the dollar is ridiculous? The company I work for, we get .5% share of profits for streaming live auctions online. On paper .5% sounds ridiculous, but if you consider we auction off multi-million dollar items the profit adds up, but alot of it goes to pay mine and other employee's salary. - foofighter828, on 06/01/2008, -1/+3Everyone deserves to make money.. unless they are making too much?

- stoodleysnow, on 06/01/2008, -2/+5I think the point has been missed: If I claimed the movies I downloaded were made by me, then it would be wrong. But we are obtaining free copies for personal use here, not re-releasing them under our own names.

- omelette, on 06/01/2008, -10/+7All I can say to that is that illegal does not always equal wrong. I know its illegal but I also know its not wrong... this is when things start to break down.
- therightclique, on 06/01/2008, -5/+2yes, this whole "stealing is wrong" idea is outmoded.....are you an idiot?
- DarkLaughingMan, on 06/01/2008, -1/+4Words change meaning throughout the ages. Just like norms of what's seen acceptable and what's not. What is defined as stealing now can also change.
- solid12345, on 06/01/2008, -3/+2You would never steal a CD from wal-mart's shelves so why is it more acceptable to download it? Don't say "well I am not taking anything physical" because the cost of the plastic disc and the paper itself is paltry as well.
The reason you don't do it is you are afraid you will get caught and arrested but if you can download anonymously online you feel you can get away with it and even justify it. - omelette, on 06/01/2008, -0/+3While I'll admit that stealing is wrong, my issue lies in that I have yet to be convinced that acquiring media through means other than RIAA approved methods IS, in fact, stealing. Sure, I wouldn't steal a CD from Wal-Mart's shelves. At some point in my life I was actually convinced that this was wrong. It makes sense to me that taking an item from someone's inventory, an item that they paid for and that they would now have to write off, is wrong. You know, even in a case where, say, a hack existed to download tracks from iTunes without paying... I would consider THAT stealing. They've gone through the trouble to find, house, index, and maintain the media... they deserve their due. But I also can't be convinced that instead of actually buying music, I'm signing up for some kind of license to listen to it in some specific manner rather than owning it outright which includes the right to pass it on to people I think would enjoy it. Just writing this out, I think I've stumbled on the real reason why I don't think sharing media is stealing. The only person it's taking something from is a group of people who add ZERO discernible value to the music industry. I need to be convinced why they deserve payment. I understand why an artist needs payment, I understand why the maintainer of the media needs payment. I DON"T understand who else needs to be in the mix or where they get off expecting me to give them money. I thought AllofMP3.com was the perfect scenario - everyone who I felt was contributing to the product I wanted, was getting paid (I understand the RIAA never accepted the money collected for the artists, but it WAS there).
Back on point though, the fact remains: illegal does not always equal wrong. Your comment, "Stealing is wrong" is just a distraction. Sure, stealing is wrong - convince me that sharing media is stealing.
- therightclique, on 06/01/2008, -5/+2yes, this whole "stealing is wrong" idea is outmoded.....are you an idiot?
- bikeidaho, on 06/01/2008, -3/+29I agree. Legality is not the best way to base morality off of. At one time Slavery was legal and sodomy was illegal.
- fzammetti, on 06/01/2008, -0/+7That's right... as opposed to now when slavery is illegal and sodomy is leg... err, wait...
"...the best way to base morailty off of".
I hate playing grammar police, but you know, sometimes...
Incidentally, isn't it crazy that in the United States at least, if you commit sodomy you're very likely to be put in a place where someone is going to sodomize you? Dunno if that's right or wrong, you could argue it both ways I guess.- therightclique, on 06/01/2008, -0/+1a blowjob is technically sodomy.
- MooNinja, on 06/01/2008, -0/+1Sodomy isn't illegal in the US. It used to be, but that was repelled by the Supreme Court in '03.
- supermanly, on 06/01/2008, -1/+0I hate to be the (spelling?) police, but not only did you misspell morality, you misquoted bikeidaho too. You realize you could have just copy/pasted that right?
I try not to correct others unless the error is to the point where it is confusing. Or if the the other person is being stupid like you. - fzammetti, on 06/02/2008, -0/+1Really?!? Copy/paste?!? Computers can do that?!?? You mean it would have saved me from a silly typo?!? (which is what it was technically, which is different than a spelling error).
And how exactly did I misquote him? You mean mistyping morality? Really, is that it??
Asswipe. - fzammetti, on 06/02/2008, -0/+1Thanks MooNinja, I didn't know that. And to think of all the time I've been wasting!
(For all potential employees reading this: THAT WAS A ***** JOKE!)
(Not that it'd be any of your business anyway)
- Turbojugend27, on 06/01/2008, -2/+1ok I should have included, the site itself does not host anything illegal, but anything you get from bit torrent there is illegal if you do not own the original.
What scares me is people don't seem to understand what stealing is anymore. I am a tech and I have people coming in with their PCs my grandparents age, wanting to know what program to use to download music, and I tell them that it is stealing and they had no idea. That is what I find scary
- fzammetti, on 06/01/2008, -0/+7That's right... as opposed to now when slavery is illegal and sodomy is leg... err, wait...
- Syphon8, on 06/01/2008, -9/+40Nothing on it is illegal. It's all metadata.
- therightclique, on 06/01/2008, -19/+2moron.
- IADTatami, on 06/01/2008, -1/+4There is more than one country in this world, therightclique. Each country often has its own set of laws.
In fact, that's one of the points of ACTA: To create a law that TPB is in violation of, so that the media distribution industry may finally succeed in shutting it down. A law that no one but an incredibly tiny handful of people wants.
- diceau, on 06/01/2008, -3/+12There's a big difference between using something illegally and claiming something as your own.
As a person about to enter the media with an intellectual product, my hope is that people enjoy my work enough to purchase it and my fear is that someone might try to rip it off and sell it as their own. Piracy on the other hand doesn't seem to even get a care out of me. Why? Because the people who are pirating it probably wouldn't have bought it anyway, at least them getting it for free gets me exposure and might get a few extra fans along the way.
Long live piracy.- solid12345, on 06/01/2008, -2/+2"Because the people who are pirating it probably wouldn't have bought it anyway"
That is all fine but would you call them heroes for downloading and not paying for your stuff? No.- Professr, on 06/01/2008, -2/+3Yes, if they serve as free advertising to people who might like it enough to pay for it.
- diceau, on 06/02/2008, -1/+1Free advertising ftw, I thank them for their efforts. Seriously though I don't think the idea of them being heroes comes into the equation ... I'm just saying they're not villains.
- mrraven200, on 06/01/2008, -2/+6Considering the software developers at Adobe, and those that make movies still have fleets of 100,000+ sports cars and multiple maxi mansions I don't in the least bit feel bad about piracy. In fact I think it levels the playing field in the information society for people like me that make ~10,000/year. I'll start crying a river of tears when I see an Adobe lead developer, manager, or major stock holder living under a bridge. Until then I think the world has bigger problems to worry about like an illegal and immoral war that is KILLING hundreds of thousands of people. Priorities ya know.
- solid12345, on 06/01/2008, -2/+2"Because the people who are pirating it probably wouldn't have bought it anyway"
- reed311, on 06/01/2008, -9/+35Yeah, it's funny that people on here really don't have much respect to copyright unless it's certain situations. For example, what if the Pirate Bay completely ripped digg off and put up a site called "Digg" with the exact same layout and everything else. People on this site would be screaming bloody-murder. But, downloading a movie or a song, which have the same copyright protections is perfectly acceptable and should be considered a right.
- bulazeem, on 06/01/2008, -10/+5speaking of the pirate bay... time to go find a good movie for tonight!
- CC440, on 06/01/2008, -18/+8I'm love that content providers are losing this fight. I could care less about the ethical and moral issues surrounding piracy. Its available and free. The cost I am willing to pay for electronic media is $0. I don't care about taking revenue away from people because there will always be some people who will pay. Even if nobody does pay I still don't care as I have no real regrets about openly stealing media. It is theft but whatever I just don't care about stealing things.
- Frostek, on 06/01/2008, -3/+5I guess the fact that you're being dug down means you hit a nerve there...
- skaldicpoet9, on 06/01/2008, -1/+9Now that is just silly. The whole point of this is to let "content providers" know that consumers aren't interested in the same business model that has worked in the past. I will gladly pay for any artist's work be it musician, programmer etc...I just don't want to be screwed in the process. I like music but paying almost $17 dollars for a cd is ridiculous. When Radiohead released In Rainbows I actually paid for it instead of opting to get it for free. Do you realize that if people weren't able to make money off of their efforts that they would be severely crippled in the quality of content that they could provide?
- moobies, on 06/01/2008, -3/+2I meant to digg you up man, but I clicked the wrong thumb. My. *****. Bad.

http://blog.wired.com/monkeybites/2007/05/did_the_ ...
And, given the amount of credibility the Pirate Bay has among many internet users for its supposedly “anarchist” and populist leanings, I'm surprised its normally outspoken founders haven't responded to these charges."
I hope you kids know that when you STICK IT TO THE MAN, you are just making a right wing millionaire richer. - Rustiga, on 06/01/2008, -3/+14I'm sure we're all guilty of downloading stuff illegally, but I hate when people make the argument that the Band/Organization gets so little money it's not even worth buying it? Every little bit counts, I hate when people try to explain things to others to justify it to themselves.
Bury or whatever, you know it's true.- Sidzilla, on 06/01/2008, -2/+10I think there are no coincidences in life. I have paid exactly as much for my downloads as the RIAA and the MPAA have distributed to the artists from the lawsuits they have settled. Zero dollars and zero cents.
- Aikidi, on 06/01/2008, -2/+7Don't act like its not true. Getting a friend to go to the concert is easier if they have the CD already, and bands make ***** more off merch and tickets than they do off of CD sales. - richardwatson, on 06/01/2008, -11/+4I dunno. I've worked with 100% risk to develop software over two years while I took a huge dock in salary, and some little jerk is going to misuse the concept of "freedom" to rip me off and somehow pretend he's on the side of "right"? When my free-market effort and risk is what Western civilization is built on? Yeah, do it, but don't pretend it's vaguely, slightly, possibly right. When the Chinese rip off your products and take your profits and the economy tanks, tell me how you feel.
Sucks, man. If you don't like the music business, innovate around it. And no, pirate bay isn't innovation, it kills people innovating.- DarkLaughingMan, on 06/01/2008, -2/+1How about everything everyone else ripped off of the Chinese early on? You know Western civilization was stuck in the dark ages and so on? The idea is to take someone's idea and build upon it. With the way things work now it's pretty hard to do even that. Not to mention the moment you even think of a new idea someone probably already patented the idea and has been squatting on it for a while. I don't need to pretend that it's vaguely, slightly, or even possibly right. I know it's right. Which is why in science the method is similar, you take someone's work and build off of it.
- Mard, on 06/01/2008, -2/+2Welcome to the future. Adapt or die.
- solid12345, on 06/01/2008, -1/+2You can adapt all you like but people are going to continue to download for free even if the record companies offered them a legal download for 5 cents a song, how can you compete with free?
- Morgonslak, on 06/01/2008, -0/+2That's like saying atheists have no morals becuase they don't believe in god.
I'd gladly pay a monthly fee for free dowloading of music as long as I was made certain the money went to the song writers and preformest and not to the production companies.. - TonyLocNE, on 06/02/2008, -0/+1explain the success of iTunes and others like it...
- richardwatson, on 06/02/2008, -0/+0There is more than one cost associated with music. Personally I'd prefer to feel good that I'm supporting a musician. The music *business* as it is can die screaming, but paying musicians for music helps them make more.
Same as e-books. Many buy them even though they could just be copied indefinitely. Some people don't mind paying because they appreciate the effort of the author and don't want to feel like they stole it.
- Morgonslak, on 06/01/2008, -0/+2That's like saying atheists have no morals becuase they don't believe in god.
- richardwatson, on 06/02/2008, -0/+0I'm doing just fine, don't worry about me. Personally I consider piracy free advertising. It's a discussion about principle and the fact that so many who demand free music and software will whine terribly that their jobs are being taken.
So - adapt or die is an excellent way to put it. :)
- solid12345, on 06/01/2008, -1/+2You can adapt all you like but people are going to continue to download for free even if the record companies offered them a legal download for 5 cents a song, how can you compete with free?

- PingKing, on 06/01/2008, -0/+1Skill and laziness simply put.
There is skill involved in playing any instrument. Somethings are very simple that within a week of playing you can play it but then there are things that take a few years to master. There is also the creativity involved.
Laziness is self explain. People are too lazy to learn how to play the music they want to hear, they just want to kick back and relax. - ileftfark, on 06/02/2008, -0/+2Then why don't you just record yourself playing a kazoo and some pots and pans and listen to that?
People who have talents often seek careers in which they can earn money by using those talents (ie, people will pay them to perform a certain job).
I may or may not use torrent sites, but your argument makes no sense, and is borderline retarded.
