- Izzie, on 10/12/2007, -5/+41sig spam is unwelcomed on digg.
- lexbaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18I found the MASH Time Capsule! (That wasn't hard)
http://www.cnn.com/2005/SHOWBIZ/TV/10/06/alda.mash/index.html
A construction worker found the time capsule so soon after the show's finale he thought the cast would want it. Alan Alda told the worker to keep it.
I guess it's still "lost," but it is not buried anymore. - IndigoMontoya, on 10/12/2007, -6/+23"1 Bicentennial Wagon Train Time Capsule
This capsule was supposed to hold the signatures of 22 million Americans. But ... someone stole the capsule from an unattended van in the bicentennial wagon train."
...and so began the first 22 million spam letters - kaje, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19The 1970s decade time capsule should remain lost forever. We don't want aliens ever finding that one.
- shakin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Now you're talking about the digital dark age.
Who says we will even be able to open a PDF, JPG, MPEG, etc in 50 - 100 years? Part of the reason why open document standards are important is to help avoid loss of information in shorter terms: 10 - 20 years. But long-term the open document specs will also be lost. Nobody will have CD or DVD players in 100 years, so how would the documents even be stored? If you include a player it won't interface with any computers in the future.
Paper is still the best bet. Film reels are a good way to archive video because they physically store the pictures. Just shine light through the film and direct the output through a lens and you can see the pictures. - djdole, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Also, if the capsule's location is known, that doesn't mean it'll be dug-up/excavated and opened.
But if it's lost, it could be accidentally destroyed or even found by someone who doesn't understand it's historical significance and they may not respect its contents and just treat it as old junk. - Chozabu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10i really think we need a way to deal with people who are *constantly* making annoying comments
im not saying cutefcuk is, not seen any of their other comments
but perhaps a "report comment" button, which once it reaches 200 reports the user is checked out by an admin, told to stop doing whatever theyre doing wrong, and if they dont comply - get banned - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9" it appears that this capsule was found in 2002."
And....??? What was in it??? More details, please! - djdole, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9@shakin
I'd say stainless steal plates before paper. Paper decomposes just like the organic material that it's made from. Press the sheets thin (You can get it even thinner than paper if needed), and engrave your message on them.
Actually, Gold would be the best since it naturally doesn't corrode or oxidate.
But that would just add to the temptation for thieves to loot the capsule. - xaxa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8But do you know where it is?
- barbobot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10yes, because those methods have proved to be so effective in the past
idiots. - unsurmountable, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13yeah, because the people who stole them just wanted to look at the outside, right?
- richardiscool, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Yeah, that would be awesome.
Aliens find the capsule millions of years after humanity have been wiped out.
"Lets load it on the ship's computer"
...
...
"*****, Acrobat Reader's crashed, we're stuck here forever now." - sirshannon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7The time capsule my Elementary School buried in 1981 was stolen, but didn't make the list (unsurprisingly). I assumed all of the "lost" time capsules were stolen.
- leszek, on 10/12/2007, -8/+15isn't it a good thing that the time capsules are lost?
this way it could travel a longer time without tampering. - invisiblesun, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10I would love to find the M*A*S*H time capsule. In fact, that would be what I'd like aliens, millions of years after we're extinct to find.
- drsnacks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"yeah, just like nobody can play records, even though the phonograph is from the 1870s or so"
You're only adding to shakin's point. Sound is recorded physically into records - literally a soundwave written in vinyl. All that's needed to read them is a needle. Electronics are used only to amplify the sound. That's not the case with any digital media, like CDs. They all need special hardware and software to decode into an analogue signal. - milkfilk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7There needs to be a digital replacement for this. PDFs, 3d models, text, audio. We can get very close to storing the same type of media and archives in a digital form.
Encrypt something, have some authorization source (like NTP) and only on a certain date can the archive be unencrypted. Actually, suddenly, I realize the complexity of this. - milkfilk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Nah, just put the file on archive.org or something. They are built to last as long as electricity is on. :) Like telecommuting keeps workers from physically commuting, you could digitally bury an archive to keep you from physically digging a hole.
- Dradis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I can understand where you're coming from, but a lot of the ones mentioned in the article would be really interesting to open up.
- retawd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The MIT problem raises an age old question. "Can a group of engineers make something so heavy a group of engineers can't lift it?"
- joeyjojo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"I'd say stainless steal plates before paper."
Stainless steel can rust, just like any steel.
Good, acid-free cotton rag or parchment paper is actually quite stable if stored properly. - blankman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I'm still waiting on that Nickelodeon time capsule set to be unburied in 2042...
- lexbaby, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7"Bicentennial Wagon Train Time Capsule
This capsule was supposed to hold the signatures of 22 million Americans. But on July 4, 1976, when President Gerald Ford arrived for the sealing ceremony in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, someone stole the capsule from an unattended van in the bicentennial wagon train. The capsule's maker, the Reynolds Company, had broken the mold. The thief’s identity and the whereabouts of the capsule are unsolved mysteries."

And thus begins the age of Identity Theft. - enforcerpsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I worked at Drake Well Museum when I was in college. For those of you who don't know what it is....its what started the oil craze everywhere. Colonel Drake finally figured out a way to get the oil out of the ground and his idea spread like wild fire.
Anyway...they buried a time capsule in the 70s and no one knows where it is. They tried to find it where it was supposed to be and it wasn't there. The digging company has no idea and no one really remembers any details from the burial day.
So yeah...this stuff is very common. - yensed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Very cool.. Me and 3 of my friends made a time capsule when we were all 9 and all plan to open it when we turn 30.
- dootisterhans, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8yeah, just like nobody can play records, even though the phonograph is from the 1870s or so
- thewise1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Lost time capsules were merely stolen by time traveling historians from the future.
- stealthboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I have documents from just ten years ago on a 5.25" floppy, but I no longer have any device to read them. This is the real shame; if we think our current digital storage is adequate. Paper is still the best archival tool.
- ricree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It's already been unburied. Nickelodeon Studios has been shut down, and they took the slime geyser and time capsule out. Unfortunately, the wikipedia page doesn't have any information on what happened to the time capsule after it was removed.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nickelodeon_Studios - tidu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That guy better watch out, or he'll have the International Time Capsule Society after him.
- modernman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Very cool, but they lost me at number 8
"not even remote sensing equipment or a clairvoyant could locate the time capsule." - richardiscool, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4dclowd, if they're that interested they'll look at your profile.
- thewise1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I know, the site that they linked to was down and I wanted to know too :(
- mage1129, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I remember placing a time capsule under the hot dog tree that never sprouted
- retawd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Then after 200, start a new account and 10 min later, same thing, different name.
- inturnaround, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2But what of the cornerstone that I found once that had a frog that sang showtunes? Everytime I tried to show him off, he'd just clam up...so I got rid of him. I'm sure he's still out there somewhere, doing the Michigan Rag (as everyone is doing according to him).
- yahoofrom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There is a black hole where all lost socks and all lost erasers and all lost time capsules are gathered together.
- dweeb73, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Then what? Bury the server somewhere?
- dagfooyo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Wow! Another Vermonter! Hey, with both of us on digg, that accounts for 2/3 of the total VT population!
- krinn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They didn't open it. They buried it next to the other one.
http://www.theolympian.com/home/specialsections/CapitolRenovation/20050103/59313.shtml
http://www.theolympian.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050610/NEWS/506100304 - dootisterhans, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2drsnacks, whats a needle? a phonograph needle is electronic. with a crystal stylus a voltage is created proportional to the grooves on the record, or with a magnetic stylus a current is induced by a magnet or a coil.
so I'm saying that this bit of archival technology has lasted over 100 years, so other may last as well. - tylerman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1pico ?
- sremick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Wow. Lyndon VT made the list. Go Vermont!
(I live in VT, but we're so small we rarely make the news) - benhocking, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5My favorite quote (from #8 Blackpool Tower):
When a search was organized recently in preparation for new building work, not even remote sensing equipment OR A CLAIRVOYANT could locate the time capsule. - dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yeah, I just saw that you could put your website in there. Thanks for the head's up.
- angelwolf71885, on 04/17/2008, -0/+0actuly it wasent unburred but the metial container was dug up and moved to the nickaloden hotel
and replainted in the ground....you can call the nick hotel in orlando florida and ask the the hotel yourself
thats what i did....and thay confermed that yes it is burred thair....and will be opend in 2042 as sceduialed...
now lets hope it dosent dissapir agian LOL - jeblis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I was just gonna say that. Bet you didn't see that comming.
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Let me ask: I usually post meaningful posts on-topic and all. If I have a link to my blog following it, so people might learn more about me and my opinions, is there any harm in that? It wouldn't upset me...
- boolean4, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Make that 7 left. The M*A*S*H time capsule has been found: http://www.cnn.com/2005/SHOWBIZ/TV/10/06/alda.mash/index.html
