The Next Social Network: WordPress
gigaom.com — Could open-source blogging platform WordPress serve as your next social networking profile? Chris Messina, co-founder of Citizen Agency, thinks so. He ’s started a project called DiSo, for distributed social networking, that aims to “build a social network with its skin inside out.” DiSo will first look to WordPress as its foundation.

- jads, on 12/12/2007, -0/+1Tumblr has become more and more like a social network by allowing you to follow create channels as well as follow other users and get updates on what they've posted. I prefer tumblr because it's so simple and uncluttered. Remember Facebook before all these 'applications'? I loved facebook then as it was simple and standard. Now I get bombarded with invites to fling poo or become a zombie. Everyone's profile has flashy bits and loads of crap filling up the screen. It's like a Myspace profile wearing it's Sunday best clothing - easier on the eyes, but it still hurts.
Wordpress could be the new facebook, but with all the bad parts too. Don't forget, Wordpress has an extensive plugin catalog that would only expand with useless and pointless plugins just like Facebook has expanded with useless and pointless apps. - axis, on 12/12/2007, -0/+1I am sure that this guy and this venture know what they are doing. I seriously doubt that they would invest money in something they think wouldn't work. Wordpress runs fine if you set it up right. Seems like a lot of people bitching about WP never run it, they just see it down. Those people obviously don't know how to optimize it and help it combat such traffic.

That people could really build their own social network as long as some universal database stores everything or some standards are made to access things. Google Open Social sounded like this but from what i read is only available to a 10 networks

Then I tried to bitch all my friends into opening their own, so I don't have to go to their facebook/myspace sites to interact with them.
