- inactive, on 09/07/2008, -13/+99Why the ***** is THAT on the front page? 24hours without google? Who cares? Try one month without computer and it will make a much better post. Buried.
PS: This article really sucked. - jessenoob, on 09/07/2008, -7/+64Wow, you seriously can't make it that long without porn?
- JonnyCasino, on 09/07/2008, -14/+53Google is such an integral part of our life that it would indeed be a catastrophe if they went down for even just a day. I can't remember a day in the past three years where I've not had to use a Google service (gmail, rss reader, search, etc.). Though it's highly unlikely that all the services would be done at the same time and I'm sure they're hosted in different locations and servers, with multiple redundant back-up servers.
- inactive, on 09/07/2008, -14/+45Imagine 24 Hours without Porn.
- DifferentAngle, on 09/07/2008, -4/+33you never go camping or anything?
- errejack, on 09/07/2008, -15/+38Web is getting more and more google-centric, and this is *bad*.
Microsoft wants software monopoly, Google wants *information* monopoly.
Every geek knows that MS sucks, but *a lot* of geeks think that google stuff is cool.
Yes, it's cool but also scary, if you watch it from a certain point of view.
Hoping for a decentralized web search tool, someday. - inactive, on 09/07/2008, -7/+30Google withdrawal symptoms?
What kind of needy emotionally retarded douchebag are you? You need to move out of your moms basement and get a girlfriend, even if its the kind that charges by the half-hour. - Samadhi007, on 09/07/2008, -1/+17That article really needed a good editor.
- stutimandal, on 09/07/2008, -4/+20Imagined. What next?
- jikmo, on 09/07/2008, -1/+16the worst part is that if i wanted to find alternatives to those i'd probably search for them with google
- Snakedal337, on 09/07/2008, -2/+16That's the difference between google and every other company out there. Google constantly releases quality tools at affordable prices (Free most of the time!), and they listen to their users to help us get more out of the web. Compare that to every other software giant out there and youll see there is no other company like Google. So yes, they may have an information monopoly but they earned it through the trust of their users and by being the best at what they do. Not by suing competitors into oblivion and locking out industries like some OTHER companies.
- inactive, on 09/07/2008, -6/+19OH NOES! 24 hours without Google! HOW WILL I SURVIVE!!!!!
To answer that question, read that irrelevant article.
Summary of the article: bla bla bla google maps bla bla bla yahoo sucks bla bla bla - nociva, on 09/07/2008, -3/+15*gasp!* oh noes!!!!!1
christ on a pogo stick. what the hell? 24 hours? use yahoo. can't use google maps? oh my.. ! he makes it sound like the gates of hell have opened upon such a revelation. how the hell did we get this far without google to begin with? it's like looking back at civilization and wondering how the hell they made it without internet, 24 hour pharmacies and indoor plumbing - by the gods!
+5 for referencing Cthulhu, though. - waluum, on 09/07/2008, -3/+15Time without porn is like crawling from a landfill to a field of flowers through a long patch of thorns and barbed wire.
- Flamekebab, on 09/07/2008, -0/+12That "article" was, in all fairness, wank.
- forevernomad, on 09/07/2008, -0/+11Maybe you should read the articles first.
- errejack, on 09/07/2008, -1/+12"Google is such an integral part of our life that it would indeed be a catastrophe if they went down for even just a day."
Yep, and this is what I consider to be the "scary" part of google coolness. - chroko, on 09/07/2008, -1/+11Search - http://search.yahoo.com/

What am I missing...? Although the horror is only *not having access to your data* - like mail. There's almost no cost to switch to a differetn map provider, for example (oh, Google Maps isn't loading.. type in Yahoo URL - done.) (Edit: sorry about the formatting, Digg won't let me fix it.) - fani, on 09/07/2008, -1/+10To be honest, I don't really use Google at all and I'm still quite productive and get all my work done... there are lots of viable alternatives.
- bonez56, on 09/07/2008, -6/+14It's a trap!
- FishHammer, on 09/07/2008, -0/+8Google actually kind of sucks sometimes. There are way too many sites that "cheat" to get their results at the top, and usually those sites are just ad farms. It can be ridiculously hard to find certain things on google without sifting through 5 pages of ***** to get to it. That is, if you find it at all.
- BradBrown, on 09/07/2008, -0/+7God help you if you live in Alabama, cause you'll end up with a negative IQ.
- SPThom, on 09/07/2008, -0/+7Go to your profile, find the article listed in recent history, and press "undigg".
- jrbrewin, on 09/07/2008, -2/+9in fairness, all modern email services 'read' your email, automatically to determine if it's spam, and how to direct ads at you when you read it. Additionally, all email hosters have the power to allow humans other than you to read email too.
oddly, these big service providers balance their load to lessen the risk of outage, i do the same. I use other email providers, other search engines. You know what, i find it horribly hypocritical that a lot of the people that bow down to google also like to think their opinion to do so is objective, and free of emotion, yet they're the people least likely to use other such services; it's much easier to mock those that do. - ShibbieZ, on 09/07/2008, -0/+7How the HELL would you look up those scandalous pictures of Miley Cyrus you told yourself you wouldn't look up when you saw about it on the news!?!
- Nabeelco, on 09/07/2008, -3/+10How do you UnDigg something? After actually READING the article, I realized it's not that good...
- tetsuo29, on 09/07/2008, -1/+8Not that I doubt you, but would you please care to name your favorite Google alternatives?
- zacbro, on 09/07/2008, -8/+14I don't really see Google as a company seeking world domination though. They encourage innovation and in that way have come up with products people want to use, or have improved on products people already use. The huge traffic they get is a by-product of that fact. It's a little scary to be so dependent on one company, but let's face it, it's not like we can't use Yahoo to accomplish most of the same things, Google just does Yahoo's job better. And if not Yahoo (insert company here)
Google doesn't suck at all. They're just really really good at what they do. - funkytommyman, on 09/07/2008, -1/+7you don't have all the URLs memorized?
- Sahdow, on 09/07/2008, -1/+7Dear god man! That is inhumane!
- Igor1080, on 09/07/2008, -0/+6That article was really poorly written. And whoever is in charge of editing should be reprimanded. I was about half a page into it and had no idea how you could submit such confusing material.
- basex, on 09/07/2008, -0/+5But this is also because must of us don't know about the alternatives to google because you can find similar stuff to google maps, google docs, google reader....
- Iztikeit, on 09/07/2008, -0/+5"Google is such an integral part of our life that it would indeed be a catastrophe if they went down for even just a day. "
"Catastrophe"? What would you label "nuclear holocaust"? Don't have much to room around now, do you? That is a little strong of a word, dude. If you honestly would consider it so you really need to get in touch with reality.
It is sad that people are THIS attached to their trivial trinkets. And Google is nothing but that. - justok, on 09/07/2008, -2/+7you had magazines??? Back in my day, we had to use real women...and we LIKED it!
- alabamasucks, on 09/07/2008, -1/+6Go retro and use MetaCrawler
- GoKings, on 09/07/2008, -0/+5Huh?
- inactive, on 09/07/2008, -1/+5this example makes no sense - we're talking about if google went away for a day when you needed it, not if you chose to leave google behind to go on vacation.
- cJw314, on 09/07/2008, -3/+7Wasn't there a "gmail blackout" for like 90 minutes about a month ago?
aha : http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/08/11/a-modern- ...
Thx for the easy results... Goo. lolz - inactive, on 09/07/2008, -1/+5Define exactly what a "decentralized web search tool" is.
Using P2P to do web searches?
Randomly using different search engines?
An aggregate search? (Push your search query to several search engines and then mix the results)
There are already tons of different web search companies. The vast majority of which suck. Adding more to the mix won't improve anything. The last thing the web needs are more poorly designed bots spidering websites, wasting bandwidth.
So please, tell me what the heck this magical decentralized search tool would be. - darkfire79, on 09/07/2008, -0/+4or live in the white house.
- talonstriker, on 09/07/2008, -0/+4 I wish Google didn't make me think of tentacles.
That would be Booble. - inactive, on 09/07/2008, -0/+4That you're aware of...
- Rixar13, on 09/07/2008, -1/+4Government is watching us to keep us safe from terrorists. Yeah Right.
- Mithivh, on 09/07/2008, -1/+4I doubt you. Name your alternatives now!
- inactive, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3I only use Google for searching (I don't even do this every day) and to check my email. Once every couple days maybe a friend will send me a funny YouTube video. Other than that, I don't think I really use any of Google's other services.
- dibbkd, on 09/07/2008, -3/+6fap fap fap
- Shoogle, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3This is the unsavory side of free web services. If you want 'em free, you have to be willing to fork over some data so the marketing scumbags can pay Google's bills. Personally, I love Google's services and use several of them every day...but I also consider all my online activity to be "public record", which is pretty much true for everyone, and try to behave accordingly. ("Try" being the key word here!)
- inactive, on 09/07/2008, -2/+5you know you can take pills for that paranoia...
- jrbrewin, on 09/07/2008, -1/+4"Adding more to the mix won't improve anything."
brilliant.
Everyone else just give up, and totally forget that monopolies are globally accepted as BAD ideas and stifle competition. Great idea. - iiDLii, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3badly written piece :(
