- mikeindustries, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Love the CommonTimes-bot! Good stuff.
(This is Mike from Newsvine, by the way)
Ok, so here's the deal: we're not a Digg killer. We're not even a Digg hurter. We love Digg over here and we don't plan to be "another Digg". How could you be? This site is run extremely well and its success and popularity is a testament to the originality of the founders and the engagement of the community.
Digg has already learned certain things we will be learning "in the field". How do large crowds react in real time to the emergence of certain types of information? How long should a story take to decay off a page? What patterns do spammers tend to repeat? These are things the Digg team has learned through experience over the last several months, and things we will be learning as well.
On the flip side, we've learned certain things from working on some of the biggest news sites in the world for the past several years that help shape what Newsvine is and will become. They are two different approaches to the same challenge: democratizing information. There's plenty of room for Digg, Newsvine and a lot of other communities in this general space. One person might even be a part of all of them. Each will have its own approach and none will be perfect. All you can hope to be is different and very good.
As a side note, let me quickly mention a word about the invite policy, since I know it's going to get criticized by someone sooner or later: There are three reasons Newsvine is invite-only for now. The first is a question of pure engineering scale. Today, on the first day we opened the doors jussssssst a hair, we hit 104,655 page views. Everything held up flawlessly, but then again, that's the idea. It's much better to test and succeed than expose yourself to even more poundage, and for some unforeseen reason, tip over. Everything looks great right now, but you never know. Side note: if you're an Ops guy and you're saying to yourself "my servers can do 1 million, ha!", yes, I know they can. But would you have bet your company that on day one, they would have?
The second reason Newsvine is invite-only is that we still have a few weeks' worth of work to get some of the most requested features ready for prime time. I know people are very willing to use unfinished stuff these days but we feel strongly about hitting a certain quality standard before officially pushing off from the dock.
And finally, the third reason we're invite-only for now is that of accountability. Well over 90% of visitors to sites like Digg and Slashdot are bona fide members of the community, submitting content in good will, engaging in interesting conversations, and generally making the most of a great service. The other sliver, however, are intent on causing problems, gaming the system, spamming, and all sorts of other things that thoughtful people don't do. A 90-10 or even 99-1 ratio doesn't sound too bad on paper, but the problem is that the 1 or 10% is often the loudest and even brings out the worst in the other group. Is this a problem that will ever go away? Doubtful. But one thing it clearly lacks is accountability. Some jerk got into the system and started posting Viagra ads? Well how did he get there? In an invite-system, you can really take away the incentive for this to take place. Furthermore, since we're actually letting users keep the revenue that's generated from their pages, it's even more important for people to pay attention to who they invite.
Anyway, I've rambled on enough but that's the state of things so far. Please enjoy the site once you're in. The world is a small place. Everyone knows everyone. :) - dude3609, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2actionstudio,
Thats true, but keep in mind.
The title says "First look". Doesn't say anything about the service launching yet. The whole point of this submission is just to show off a new service that will be available soon. We all want there to be more then screenshots and info, but its not here yet. Sit tight :D - saysaknow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can see Yahoo buying this up in a year or two.
- dude3609, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1
yukevster said "DOMAIN NAME !? You guys all hopeful about an invite....well I got one but you gotta buy a domain name first..!! What's with that!"
NO YOU DONT. Everything is free. It mentions your own subdomain('your-name.newsvine.com'). - estacado, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just registered. It's like digg, but for wider topics. Has Reuters and AP news fed to it. You can submit links like on Digg. You can write your won stories. Good for those who like to post their own blogs.
- mikeindustries, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, the commontimes spamming thing is pretty weird, but at least I know there's an actual person posting now. When we first announced Newsvine several weeks ago, every single blog who covered it had a message in their comment thread somewhere that said:
"Commontimes.org does this today and is open to the public."
It was usually by a guy named "Buddy" or "Jeff" but it was the exact same message. I thought it was a bot that looked for mentions of Newsvine, and when I saw the same thing on this thread, I thought the same thing. Oh well... perhaps it's just an overzealous user. Let's not blame the whole CommonTimes crew. But yes, enough with the URLs already :) - dude3609, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1actionstudio said "the newsvine site isn't even open yet"
Read the topic title. "The First Look"
Screenshots & Info are there.
mirror in case of digg effect:
http://www.madeincr.com/2006/01/06/newsvine-private-beta-review/ - dude3609, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1omg.. awesome
It's like a chain link scam, + digg, but with no scam. lol
I think the person making the website is smart enough to know how to keep it up.
Since you can get 90% of the profits from your own subdomain, then I can tell that there will be some SERIOUS users posting alot.. You'll see albertpacino's everywhere. lol
invite me please. :D
sortheros953*^(a ,tt,)^* gmail.com - dude3609, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1btw, commontimes looks a bit too clunky. It doesnt look user friendly.
- southtownguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i would love a invite
averageguy at Inbox.com - tidejwe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd look at it if I wasn't FORCED to register just to "LOOK" Not worth the time. . . they're pulling a "New York Times". I refuse to go to any site that has FORCED REGISTRATION to even view it...I'll stick with the alternatives...

- richard5mith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is a depressing story. I ran a site identical to this four years ago called Planet Groovy. I closed it down because nobody used it, and here it is back again with marketing and hype behind it.
- DJSdotcom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As if we didn't have enough CommonTimes spam on this damn thread, one of their founders comes in and pounds their URL into our head just one more time. Thank god, because I don't think I remembered the URL.
Oh, and Mr. Common Times person. It was very nice of you to create a Digg username just so you could leave your spam comments. You haven't even Dugg one damn story yet.... good thing you give two ***** about Digg and our community.
SUPER lame. I gave all your comments a -3 for being SPAM. - abrownz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If anyone has an extra invite I would really appreciate it.

does not link to a blog. Digg wont let me submit any url's on digg.com such as this one, and I cant submit links from places like tinyurl.com so i had no choice. - heedley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hmm... link no linky! Sorry for the double post, it should let me edit.... :S

- FunHeadlines, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You can AIM me at NewYorkGeckos if you want an invite. Tell me your email address and I'll shoot you an invite.
- dougmo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0NO THANKS!!! I prefer DIGG. I don't need the flashy interface. It reads just like every other news site. That is my opinion. You may like it.
- directorblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why general news sites done digg-style won't succeed:
http://digg.com/technology/Why_Digg-style_general_news_sites_won_t_succeed - h3adstr0ng, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i signed up for the beta, this doesnt really seem like competition for digg, since their goals are different (world news vs tech news). The pictures looked interesting... i'll digg when i try though.
- dude3609, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I sent everybody who asked for an invite their invite. I'm all out now. :(
If you have the ability to invite people onto newsvine, please send em out. :D

http://poxy.us.to/ - Proxy page(Free, no ads, fast, etc) - DJSdotcom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0BTW guys, in case you didn't know, my buddy Mike Davidson used to be one of the guys running the show at ESPN.com. If you love their fantasy football he's the guy to thank, and if you hate it, it was probably one of his co-workers' mistakes ;)
Newsvine kicks major ass, I'm glad it got a thorough Digging. When it launches for real to the main public, I expect yet another frontpager! - planetnelson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great idea. More citizen media unbundling the mainstream. Rock on, Mike.
- DallasRPI, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So, do users sign up for there own adsense account? Or is it owned by newsvine? If for example one person commits click fraud on their subdomain will newsvine lose its whole account with google? Just a thought.
- volatileacid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I first heard about it here:
http://www.mikeindustries.com/blog/archive/2005/03/how-to-snatch-an-expiring-domain
The CEO's very own blog, where he talks about how he snapped up the domain,
Makes very interesting reading.... - Johnny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Mike Davidson is awesome. I don't think he ever has a bad idea.
- yukevster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0DOMAIN NAME !? You guys all hopeful about an invite....well I got one but you gotta buy a domain name first..!! What's with that!
- h3adstr0ng, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0we'll be needing to see a diggv3 or digg mite not be able to keep up with the flow of things.
- dude3609, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Digg this !!
http://digg.com/links/CEO_of_Newsvine_speaks_out_regarding_Digg_vs._Newsvine. - rulethirty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i've been using it since thursday.. and i have to say.. its amazing. digg meets cnn, with built in blogger-ish tools to contribute your own columns.. mike davidson is a complete badass.. elegant is the only real way i can think of to describe it.. if they get the kinks worked out, it's going to be huge.
- h3adstr0ng, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0thus, it is not a digg killer. This site is a complete news site, digg is reserved for tech news.
- mystical, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i would like an invite
mysticaly4u@yahoo.com - yukevster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"NO YOU DONT. Everything is free. It mentions your own subdomain('your-name.newsvine.com')."
Tried that it just says. "must be a registered domain name' ... or words to that effect. - dude3609, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0***** stop man. It was talking about a subdomain.
You dont need a registered domain name.
ITS FREE, ALL OF IT IS. I registered and fully looked at everything so stop trying to make newsvine look like *****. - dude3609, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You mis-understood it.
"Feel free to register and select a domain name for yourself (yourname.newsvine.com) whenever you'd like. It's all free of course."
It's all free. - mikeindustries, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sending out invites is perfectly ok, but once again, please remember that you are accountable for who you invite. Just something to keep in mind. :)
