- rivalius13, on 05/12/2008, -3/+58Had to tilt my head to the left to figure it all out.
- Hillsfar, on 05/12/2008, -1/+52So in 2012, the iPhone will cost me $25?
- inactive, on 05/12/2008, -1/+411. Mayan calendar ends.
2. ???
3. Lower prices. - YourSexyMama, on 05/12/2008, -0/+33All I want to know is who the hell is paying $52 for a VCR?
- DeathJux, on 05/12/2008, -0/+28Wired has a section called "Infoporn" in each issue of the magazine.
Their graphs and graphic design are the coolest features of the magazine... they certainly know how to hire talent. - Batiu-Drami, on 05/12/2008, -1/+28No no, it'll still be $499. This chart is for normal technology, not apple products.
- RedRummy, on 05/12/2008, -0/+20The price fluctuates wildly as new technologies come and go (hard disks, more memory etc) ... whereas the price of a colour TV has consistenly dropped as its essentially using the same tech.
- Shadowgamers, on 05/12/2008, -3/+24Does wired usually make images that I have to bring my face a few inches to the screen to actually see it?
- getbusylivin, on 05/12/2008, -2/+20Yes. The Armageddon should lower the demand of all cell phones. Mostly because the Four Horsemen will have destroyed all of Earth's satellites.
- swrostmore, on 05/12/2008, -1/+17In 2012, iPhone buys you.
- antdude, on 05/12/2008, -1/+17Awesome, BUT it is too small! :(
- BatterseaPS, on 05/12/2008, -9/+23Call me a prude, but 3D graphs are a little too explicit for me.
Give me the romantic, softcore, planar ones. - justastatistic, on 05/12/2008, -0/+12Ever heard of average price?
- markiemarke, on 05/12/2008, -2/+13me too, what a brilliant representation
- RedRummy, on 05/12/2008, -0/+11yes, that was obvious.
- SteveMax, on 05/12/2008, -1/+10Analog TVs? Which household in the world doesn't have at least one?
CD Players? Which person in the world doesn't have one, or at least one in the family?
Only the households that live on the edge have dropped all analog TVs and all CD players; and there are more people entering the market than those leaving it. So, those lines remain more or less constant.
Now VCRs are declining, and the graph shows it. It's quite recent though, but you can see it starting around 2000. - spetznatz, on 05/12/2008, -6/+17The PC one is particularly interesting around its beginnings, anyone want to explain that one? Really interesting though. Dugg!
- heyitsgarrett, on 05/12/2008, -1/+9That's what she said
(apologies.. I know I know) - carve, on 05/12/2008, -0/+8They probably used a computer :)
- jacekpoplawski, on 05/12/2008, -7/+15This is very difficult to read.
- getbusylivin, on 05/12/2008, -2/+10Don't question god.
- kjcdude, on 05/12/2008, -2/+11Holy graph batman
- earchew, on 05/12/2008, -1/+9on ebay
- beatleman, on 05/12/2008, -0/+7You're right, $52 is too high. If you ask nicely I'll sell you my parent's VCR for $50. It's a hell of a bargain since they paid a little over $1,500 for it in 1982.
- chrgrose, on 05/12/2008, -1/+9Your a dick. Reported.
- carve, on 05/12/2008, -1/+8Maybe you're seeing the Commodore 64 in that dip
- Lachlan91, on 05/12/2008, -0/+6That's because it refers to the category of the product, not the brand name. But you're right, there's no mention of hard drive or flash memory based mp3 players.
- NotOptium, on 05/12/2008, -0/+6Yeah.
Or just moderately intelligent. - brundlefly76, on 05/12/2008, -0/+7I dont understand why the graphs didnt represent a loss of market penetration for analog tv's, cd players, and especially VCRs over the past 10 years.
- antdude, on 05/12/2008, -0/+5No, it's too small.
- feshmania, on 05/12/2008, -3/+9Where's the Aerosmith graph?
- mrynit, on 05/12/2008, -0/+5my neck hurts
- BevansDesign, on 05/12/2008, -1/+6You've wasted your money. And your life! Mwa ha ha ha!
- Roger, on 05/12/2008, -0/+5broken
- LeRenard, on 05/12/2008, -0/+4You must have done stellar on the SATs.
- J3EBS, on 05/12/2008, -0/+4I would not let my kids anywhere near your "should of".
- foolishfool, on 05/12/2008, -0/+4I would not let my kids anywhere near your "gigantic DVD player".
- HonoredMule, on 05/12/2008, -0/+4It's the only one where adoption rate was roughly linear with seemingly no relationship to price. It's also the only device that drives work and business, as opposed to being primarily/almost exclusively an entertainment device. So really, the market dynamics of PC's (even just in the consumer/non-corporate market) are totally different, and are based on the evolution of the PC's importance for normal participation in society, as opposed to simply desirability vs. price.
One thing that isn't really represented here is market growth /after/ market adoption. For example, market adoption for VCR's was very minimal from the 90's onward, yet the price continued dropping. My answer to that would be that VCR's sustained growth by transitioning into a commodity device. Sales figures for new adopters became virtually nil, but the market was still full of people buying additional units, replacing broken models, or just buying new models that looked nicer or improved upon minor features. The sharp drop in price at the end also coincides with the loss of demand for VCR's even as a commodity item...brought on by the adoption of DVD players. - crownedgriffin, on 05/12/2008, -0/+4Not while Apple contolls the prices. All that plastic buffing adds a premium.
- SteveMax, on 05/12/2008, -0/+4That's not the point...
- vrta, on 05/12/2008, -0/+4Dugg for good eyes.
- Cytranic, on 05/12/2008, -0/+3Man talk about left field...
- alexf, on 05/13/2008, -0/+3I guess you missed where it said "adjusted for inflation."
- MtheoryX, on 05/13/2008, -0/+3A+++++ Comment!!! Would Read Again!!!!
- theexitwound, on 05/12/2008, -0/+4I want to see the prices of CDs and how with time they have fallen to be affordable.
- carve, on 05/12/2008, -0/+3If you look at blank CDs, you'll see just that. The first ones were expensive. For music CDs, you're (over)paying for the content, not the object.
- ctnp, on 05/12/2008, -0/+3
Or just [strike]moderately[/strike] slightly intelligent
- Doomsan, on 05/12/2008, -1/+4I thought this chart was about living on the edge of a mountain or something.
