- theblooms, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2As an adult who grew up practicing nuclear bomb drills in grade school (the whole duck and cover thing under the desk), the fact that so many young people making pro-commie statements and are enthralled with the idea of communism, so recently after the Soviet collapse, really scares the crap out of me. It also scares me that some people compare an American President to Nazis with a perfectly straight face.
It scares me, because when faced with a threat, these same people will embrace it. How many people who are pro-communist own a rifle? How many of those people will pick up that rifle to defend America? None I bet, because they have no idea how truly great and different America really is from the rest of the world. Know why Cubans in Miami are hard core Republicans? They escaped the "socialist paradise" that is Cuba, and want no more of it.
After tasting American freedom, nothing else will do. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The ignorance of some of you never ceases to amaze me. You run around like headless chickens saying that communism is such a terrible idea.
Funny how its failed EVERYWHERE it is tried.
Just for laughs, care to explain to us how Communism is a good idea? And please give so examples where it has improved the lives of people.
This ought to be good. - Ratteler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The Internet is Democracy. Why do you think our government is desperate to DRM it and "control" it.
Don't fool yourself, we're one more Republican President and Congress to having to fight the same battles the same way. - lollerskates, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2goatrandy: "Communism is a good idea in theory, but in practice it always winds up like this. Man, human nature ruins everything."
Logical conclusion: for a utopian government, we must kill all humans. I mean, I guess robots and animals can enjoy it, maybe.
deathfrogg: "Things sure did change in forty years. Welcome to the Fourth Reich."
Wrong. Reich refers to the empires of Germany and Germanic nations. The first reich was the Holy Roman Empire, the second was the unification of Germany under the Prussian king, and the third was Hitler.
I see what you did there, though.
geterix: "Communism is never a good idea, period. "
Hey now, don't blame Marx just because nobody really implemented his idea fully. - thexder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Well in Cuba, living standards are greatly improved"
***** - CorpT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why do communists always assume that people who hate communism have never read Marx? Oh that's right, everyone who hate communism is a sheeple. Not like those independent thinking commies....
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1
"Communism is the period AFTER socialism. Socialism is the transitional period between capitalism and communism. All the "communist" countries you learned about from Fox news or whatever, NEVER actually called themselves communist. They are in the socialist transitional period.
So which countries has socialism "worked". Well in Cuba, living standards are greatly improved. Cuba is a small island outside the US "What you ask? There are countries outside of the US?" Cuba is far from perfect and still has a long way to go. The Soviet Union when Lenin was about was also Socialist.
One last thing, in countries such as China. Socialism wasn't really tried properly but the average life span-DOUBLED."
This is so sad its not even funny. It is amazing to think that spoiled little kids in the west just do not know how good they have it. From their parents basements, they have the nerve, on a PC built by a capitalist, to actually say that communism and socialism are great systems to live under.
If Cuba is such a ***** paradise, why are people trying to sneak away from there everyday? Where are all the oppressed people from the US sneaking to Cuba???????
And isn't it amazing how of all the Communist nations:
USSR
E. Germany
N. Korea
China
Vietnam
Laos
Cambodia
Burma
All the former Eastern Bloc nations
The only one they can site as being a success is a backward ***** of an island in the Caribbean. - mhl12, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1First of all, to all people who just think that communism is black and white, that's completely wrong. Even though China is still under a communist government, the people have far greater authority and voice than it did in the past years. More and more democratic changes are being made. Think about it. Compare the Chinese government right now with the Soviet's. There is a BIG difference.
- forezt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Instead of typing a huge paragraph about how I feel what I revolution would do for China today, allow me to quote Kim Stanley Robinson:
"You can't get any movement larger than five people without including at least one ***** idiot."
Now let's multiply that by one billion people. Don't assume that I mean to say that I don't want more freedom in China. I think that would be among one of the best things that could happen on Earth at the moment. I simply do not want people to fail to consider that perhaps they - we - are already naturally moving in that direction. A revolution would merely aggravate wounds and let all kinds of harmful microbes into the flesh of Chinese government.
What we need is to maybe nudge things so they'll go a little faster, but for the most part I think we're picking up speed all the time. - Novion76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm glad someone took a stand. It's extremely dangerous to do so, but it's the only way the people will be freed. People will lose their livelihoods in the process in paving the way for freedom for others. They cannot do it alone.
- drphilngood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's articles like this that remind us how precious freedom is.
I hope to soon see the Chinese people acquire the freedom they so thirst for. - seacow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2geterix-Can I first start off with the fact that I live in Poland. Poland as I am sure even you know was a member of the Warsaw pact. I myself was fairly small when the CCCP still stood. Living standards for us used to be MUCH,MUCH better. I was simply pointing out Cuba as one of the more successful socialist countries.
My computer is Lenovo, Lenovo is Chinese. I thought by your line of though; China was "communist"
Emigration from Cuba is legal. Immigration of Cubans into the USA is not(to be more precise, the quotum is 20,000, but the USA actually allows a lot less people in), so Cuban refugees are forced to use small boats, because if they hit the coast, they'll be allowed to stay. It's a good propaganda tool for America that works perfectly on idiots like you.
Also, American's can't travel to Cuba without the threat of a heavy fine. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Communism is a good idea in theory"
Communism is never a good idea, period.
I know alot of kids in the US think that a Communist system is soooooo cool because you, like get stuff, like, for free, and people, like dont have to be, like, sick and stuff.
It is a subhuman form of government that has done nothing for the people that are forced to live under it. Thats why you had millions trying to escape while only a handful of idiot leftist from the west trying to go live there.
The Chinese people are brave and with the internet they can all be that guy who stands in front of the tank. - synae, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1seacow - There are different dialects of every language, not all of which recognized by free translation software. Hence, thexder's comment "Babelfish speaks Spanish from Spain not from Cuba."
- glitch47, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Clique vs Click...
Did you guys read the article? It's not a play on words. The article's not about a group of editors changing China, it's about one article that was sent with a single mouse click started a political firestorm-- hence "click". - Apreche, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1s/China/USA/ and vice versa
- Aeiri, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1for the record there has never been a communist state. only wannabes. my guess is that >unless there is enough wealth in a system that there is no competition for resources that it will fail.
>
>expand your horizons. loose the paranoia... educate yourself... forget the propaganda. it makes you stupid and preudiced.
I used to be exactly like you. I knew about the whole communism never has been "truly" practiced and such, and used to think communism/socialism was the answer.
Then I discovered Libertarianism. The reasons our government are bad are not because they are democratic/freedom oriented, it's exactly the opposite. YOU are the one who's been brainwashed into thinking what we have is true freedom, what we have is closer to socialism (DEFINITELY not on the level, of China, though). If you read up on Libertarianism, I think you'll be greatly surprised, since people who follow it think that leftist AND rightest people are stupid :)
If you need a kick-start, I'd check out the podcast "Free Talk Live" (freetalklive.com). Great radio show which attempts to spread the message about Libertarianism. - thexder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have a better source: My mother, my father, my grandparents, my great-granparents, my aunts and uncles, my cousins. All of which are from Cuba.
- lordthor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1***** communism, and ***** china.
Yay, li. - p1nhead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Chinese government = pwned
- Deathfrogg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Quote by thexder: I wouldn't want to visit Cuba for two reasons. One because I wouldn't want to support the regime with my tourist dollars. Secondly I'd be afraid of getting hit on the head by a slab of cement falling off of a building. Have you ever seen photos of Cuba prior to Castro? It was a paradise. Varadero beach was the most beautiful in the world. Yes there are some nice touristy areas, but only tourists and employees are allowed there.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is a flat out lie. Before Castro, the mafia (yes the REAL mafia) controlled the entire island. ALL the land mass was held in total ownership by about 300 families who also controlled the entire wealth of the island. Under Baptiste, slavery was pretty much still legal and the entire population was subject to the whims of the mafia controlled federal police force. They enforced rack renting and controlled prostitution, gambling and all the things that brought those tourists to the island in the first place. Bacardi was just one of these families. It was a military dictatorship in every definition of the word, and there was no law at all for the workers and their families. It was COMMON for the police to kidnap children to keep the whorehouses stocked with fresh meat. It was COMMON for the police to kick a door in and butcher whole families for protesting this. Castro Ended these practices, and had those who participated in them shot, as they richly deserved.
Paradise? Only for the wealthy and the freinds of the mafiosi who controlled the government there. Cuba now has a 99% literacy rate, even better than the USA. Whereas it was illegal under Baptiste to teach a native to read. you could have literally been shot for having a school in Havana that taught locals to read. Cuba also now boasts of having the best heart surgeons in the world.
Look at the Cuban Constitution, its is nearly identical to the US Constitution.
I can hardly wait untill it is legal for me to go there. The Beaches are still there, and the coral reefs are still mostly intact because it is illegal there to possess dynamite, something that is still used with appalling frequency in the rest of the Carribean (including Florida) for fishing and channeling.
Those pictures posted above this, mean nothing, you can find the same exact things in every country in the world including those in the USA. Maybe if we lifted the trade embago it wouldnt be so bad there.
Biggest difference between Cuba and the US? In Cuba, nobody goes hungry and nobody is homeless. They arent rich, but theyre not scrabbling in the dirt like they were under Baptiste. Under the whips and the guns of the Federal Police. - lbft, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Paul Owen, just because ""Clique" doesn't sound like "click"." in your accent doesn't mean it doesn't sound the same in other peoples'. Haven't you got anything better to complain about?
- dwhitbeck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0""After tasting American freedom, nothing else will do."
I suppose you've never tasted anything from Canada, eh?"
Canda has good water, good fish too.
I don't care for Hortons. - muikano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You guys still think Google made the wrong decision? Any war can be won with more computing power. The internet and a good search engine gives just that. More computing power to the people. American Freedom. Have you read the news lately? Condoning torture using illegal channels? Spying on citizens without going through the committee set to oversee it?
Come on. If there is one more Republican after Bush, this place aint going to be America anymore. - WDot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, amazing what can be achieved by word of mouth. Good job and good luck.

Are U serious?..Someone actually said this. Where is this "freedom" you speak of? Enlighten me. - felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0seacow has PWND the discussion.
too bad he left. - thexder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The Babel Fish lives on brainwave radiation from every source but its host. It then excretes enegry in the form of exactly the correct brainwaves needed by its host to understand what was just said.
- seacow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Whatever, I don't think the racist comment was needed. I still don't believe you. You didn't really back your argument up with any valid points. Anybody can shout and scream. The digg article was good and I am now exiting this page permantly as our "discussion" is developing into a flame war.
- mephitix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Inspiring article. Regardless of what communism is/isn't, I hope many of you realize the scathing system of censors China employs, and the ultimate censoring of freedom that it touts. I hope in the future the Chinese government understands that people should be allowed to have a voice in anything that they believe.
- dwhitbeck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"Biggest difference between Cuba and the US? In Cuba, nobody goes hungry and nobody is homeless."
Cuba is just lucky to be located close enough to the equator. They can exist on a lower standard of living because they don't have to keep warm. - thexder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes it was a racist comment, but in cuban speech it is not as bad as it sounds in english. I do apologize if it was offensive.
- jwade1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like the "Tank Man" picture. You know your one bad mofo when you can stop four tanks.
- thexder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That sounds like an informed comment and I'm arguing the emotions conveyed to me by my family and those other families I have met in the exile community in Miami. I have not thoroughly studied the history of Cuba to speak with such authority as you have. I am backing down because I only have emotion on my side and you appear to have facts. I don't have any facts to counter with. I do this reluctantly as I feel I am letting my heritage down. I would prefer to argue from a base of facts than seem like a fool arguing stories conveyed to me throughout my childhood.
- luvkit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Funny how its failed EVERYWHERE it is tried."
I agree, but hasn't every system of government failed sometime during history? Just an observation. - Vector713, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this story is awesome
- mckone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0+digg. Good article, well-written and held my attention for all 4 pages, which is unusual for me on internet news articles. I hope whatever is happening in China is somehow improving people's lives, but I'm not sure this article, let alone heated arguments about the viability of socialism/communism, tells anybody anything about that.
- thexder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0stick that in babelfish and see if you can tell me what it means. Babelfish speaks Spanish from Spain not from Cuba.
- dhakbar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0China sucks ass.
- seacow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Thats what I get:
Now this gringo this saying to me that my family is of lie... ay God mio. Sight which I am going to say to you, I castrate is analfamicrosefalo mogotarupido. The handle snores to me. Your you do not know anything of as Cuba it were before I castrate. Your you think that something that your you learned by ayi is the truth. The truth is that Communismo is a great cake. And which I castrate like another one comemierda of Venezuela is ***** that rob everything what they can and they put those that oppose to them in carcel.
Ok, either:
A) You are bad at Spanish ( I do not speak Spanish)
B) You have a Spanish-Cuban translator. - thexder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wouldn't want to visit Cuba for two reasons. One because I wouldn't want to support the regime with my tourist dollars. - MrTea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I thought everyone knew that Babelfish doesn't speak the languages it translates too. I guess not.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You can't have an internet and censor information. China's government needs to decide. ;-)
- thexder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Okay now this white boy is telling me that I'm lying about my family...oh my god. Listen to what I'm going to tell you, Castro is a effin idiot. This really irks me. You have no idea of what Cuba was like before Castro. You think something you read somewhere in a a book is the truth. The truth is that Communism is a big pile of s#*t. And that Castro like that other idiot from Venezuela are wimps that steal everything they can and throw anyone who opposes them in jail"
- dwhitbeck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Castro wasn't even a good baseball player. He's a jackass.
- spingk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Theres a d across my hole screen that won't go away. No digg.
- Korvaras, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's pretty inspiring. It's interesting to see China change over the years. Eventually it will get better, but things like that take time. I remember when I was in middle school, I accidentally read a book on the Tianaman(sp?) Square Massacre (Didn't realize at first, that the book was about that), and I was rather chilled by it... but inspired by the courage of the students.
We live in interesting times folks. -
