- inactive, on 02/14/2008, -2/+29Nice submission, I wasn't aware of all of these. I am still stunned at how big the AOL / Time Warner deal really was, insane!
- mentor, on 02/14/2008, -0/+12But still, he doesn't know about Veritas?
- ZaNkY, on 02/14/2008, -0/+11I initially thought the same, but then did some research:
"May 1999 - [Veritas Software] Acquired the Network and Storage Management Group of Seagate Software. This included Backup Exec."
"On December 16, 2004, Veritas and Symantec announced their plans for a merger in a deal valued at $13.5 billion... On July 2, 2005, Symantec and Veritas finalized the merger and the resulting company has retained the name Symantec."
Wikipedia quotes 13.5 as opposed to 11.9 (billion, USD)

- whitenerdy92, on 02/14/2008, -0/+8I heard that too.
- intekra, on 02/14/2008, -0/+6Umm... You're thinking of Verisign.
Veritas BackupExec ring any bells? - davidwasman, on 02/14/2008, -2/+6Speaking of Giant Corporations; I'm growing weary of all these Gawker Media sites monopolizing Digg.
- JoshuaLowe, on 02/15/2008, -1/+4I don't think you understand how this works. Unless someone else comes up with a better offer, this is going to happen. Yahoo's board can bluster all they want, but the shareholders will ultimately decide what happens. Internally, Yahoo execs already admit that the deal is likely unstoppable, short of governmental interdiction in the USA or EU. Just like when Oracle forcefully bought out Peoplesoft, it was inevitable. MicroHoo is coming.
- shawnanigans, on 02/14/2008, -1/+4There was a company called Man's man?
- perryjp, on 02/14/2008, -0/+2Buried as inaccurate. This person apparently didn't do much research, there have been plenty of others that didn't make the list.
- geekchic, on 02/15/2008, -0/+2They inlcuded AOL which is a telco, so they could have included Vodafone.
- chris8535, on 02/14/2008, -1/+3I was at the JDS Uniphase trial.... the company went from one of the largest in the world, to single the biggest loss of market value in history.
I watched the CEO quake in his boots as he explained that he didn't exactly look into the billions going into these purchases.
oh, the .com boom days. - dagamer34, on 02/14/2008, -0/+2They couldn't have honestly thought dial-up was going to last forever, did they? I think they should have replaced their crystal ball.
- mysteryhead, on 02/14/2008, -0/+1Time Warner didn't regret that one I bet.... it's a good thing they have Harry Potter...
- ewagnerjr2000, on 02/14/2008, -3/+4I believe that yahoo declined microsoft's offer. No merger.
- ExSlashdotter, on 02/14/2008, -1/+2Symantec needs to just bid farewell to the veritas codebase and just start again. Backup Exec is really one of the worst products I've ever used, and its one of those products that you *should* be able to count on.
- intekra, on 02/14/2008, -1/+2Amen to that!
- perryjp, on 02/14/2008, -0/+1Buried as inaccurate... there are plenty more large mergers that this idiot doesn't even touch
- seandfeeney, on 02/14/2008, -1/+2Apparently, msaleem has never worked in the enterprise market to not have heard of most of these companies.
Where is EMC on this list? They have made some pretty big acquisitions like RSA and VMWare. Guess they didn't cost much and they were just smart. - sjbdallas, on 02/14/2008, -0/+1Kind of surprised that microsoft doesn't show up more on there. Oh and that TimeWarner deal makes me giggle at how much of a waste that was.
- bwolmarans, on 02/14/2008, -0/+1buried, just for missing Cisco's strategic acquisition of Arrowpoint (which they promptly killed after acquiring it) which forced Nortel to acquire Alteon, problem was, Cisco had the cash Nortel had to borrow the money, and Nortel immediately started to sink to bottomless depths and will never again climb out of debt.
- geekchic, on 02/15/2008, -0/+1Then why include AOL - which is a telecom firm.
- inactive, on 02/15/2008, -0/+1Anyone who dugg you down, probably hasn't used it. +
- inactive, on 02/15/2008, -0/+1No one in their right might admits to any knowledge of BackupExec.
And if so, only long enough to upsell a manager to Netbackup. - jlgolson, on 02/15/2008, -0/+1Tech mergers. No Telecom or industrial. This data is directly from Thomson Financial.
- jessechan, on 02/15/2008, -0/+1How many of those mergers and acquisitions were successful?
- jlgolson, on 02/15/2008, -0/+1Tech mergers. No Telecom or industrial. This data is directly from Thomson Financial.

http://www.saudiy.net - phr0s7b1tt3n, on 02/14/2008, -1/+1wow, i would have thought there were more. but then again $40+ billion is a lot.
so with the USD down, how does the 1998 dollar compare to the 2008 dollar? - techresearcher, on 02/14/2008, -1/+1Do phone companies really count as "tech"? I mean hardcore blog tech?
- Artemisian, on 02/14/2008, -2/+2***** that is a lot of dollars. I'm a little dazzled.
- 1310nm, on 02/14/2008, -2/+2Saw a comment on TA, JDS Uniphase makes telecom test equipment, mostly optical testing stuff up to 40gb/s. Had this gone back to 97, there would be the Worldcom/MCI merger for $37 billion, and almost a buyout of Sprint for $129 billion (denied by antitrust regulators mostly, and EU regulators).

- Dartanion, on 02/15/2008, -0/+0I logged in just to post about how bad an investment Backup Exec was. I'd have rather spent the time at this point with Bacula, or the money on something else.
- geekchic, on 02/14/2008, -3/+3Umm, what about the Vodafone takeover of Mannesmann - worth (at the dollar rate at the time) US$185 billion, which puts it ahead of fellow telco AOLs merger with Time Warner.
- jlgolson, on 02/15/2008, -1/+1Tech mergers. No Telecom or industrial. This data is directly from Thomson Financial.
- taupeng, on 02/15/2008, -1/+0Just for not knowing JDS Uniphase...this digg should be buried. Come on...JDS U is pretty darn big in Silicon Valley.

- bluegene, on 02/14/2008, -6/+2Seagate buys veritas for $17.7 billion dollars...OK
Symantec buys veritas for $11.9 billion dollars...wait a minute something went wrong here! - explnx, on 04/27/2009, -5/+1It is plastered on every website that takes credit cards.
- m4dy, on 02/14/2008, -5/+0Had been waiting for a list like this one since Microsoft made their bid for Yahoo
