- midlifecrisis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12The best company to work for is your own.
- deadapostle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4#100 - Nike. Except if you work in one of their asian factories. Classy list.
- tagiam, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Please, don't put much faith in this list. I have worked for two of the companies on this list and I can tell you...neither was a picnic. Please remember that the companies on this list pay Fortune to be considered and then choose the employees that complete the survey.
You've been warned. - loveandrockets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3My brother works at Genentech. One day they gave everybody ipod nanos for no reason. It's that good.
- AynRandwasright, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2About Google, it's nothing but a sweatshop for bright people
- jarva, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3i dunno about this list, i mean where's IBM/AMD/Google?
- Macam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hot Topic?? What happens if you do well there? You get time off to go to a Hoobastank concert, along with a free complimentary Care Bears black t-shirt and cape?
- rolandog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Interestingly enough, neither Appler or Google were mentioned in the top 100... but Microsoft was...
- DogHumpsMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I guess the cashiers at Wegmans will have to to switch out their "We're Number 1!" pins for "We're Number 2!" pins this year.
- blue9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2In the USA, not the top 100 for the world !!
- andocom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"i dunno about this list, i mean where's IBM/AMD/Google?"
I'm a bit suprised about google not being on the list, huge growth, own project time, free lunch etc, but IBM WTF? Have you been living under a rock, they have class action lawsuits over pensions, refusal to pay overtime, even back to the carcinogenic chemicals lawsuits from a few years back. I wouldn't hold my breath for them to make the list anytime soon. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why should Google be #1? Have you worked there?
Jesus, the fanboyism is sick and pathetic. - bertwagner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Google hasn't been around long enough to qualify as a 100 Best Companies to Work for candidate; Apple declined to participate in the survey."
- adiosjefe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why does Google have to be in this list? Just because you like Google doesn't mean it needs to be in this list. Other than free lunches why should Google be one of top 100 companies to work for? Free lunch??? Who cares!!! Why do you people think Google can do no wrong??? Have you seen Google video???
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Please, don't put much faith in this list. I have worked for two of the companies on this list and I can tell you...neither was a picnic. NO, NO, NO, completely wrong, this person has no idea what he or she is talking about. The list itself has nothing to do with Fortune, it's created by Great Place to Work Inc. in San Francisco (full disclosure: I interned there a few years ago). Companies are invited to submit application packets and employee culture surveys, NO MONEY exchanges hands. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Hmm really lame of Yahoo not to put Google on the list, just because they're competers"
rofl...competers? computers? competitors? - quietk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2What about google? From what i have seen that looks like a great place to work.
- delete600, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love how people keep saying... "oh see Yahoo on the list but not Google, coincidence???"
If you notice the list is just on the Yahoo website linked, but it was completed by Fortune magazine - quaker120, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Keep in mind also that this list only includes public corporations."
Man, RTFA, flattmeister. The very fitst line of the Wegman's profile is "Work really is a family affair at this privately held grocery chain." - brhad56, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Starbucks? Sure..If you like $6 an hour and no vacation
- link_36p, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1no digg cuz my fav search engine isnt on there!
Think about the free lunches people :) - Bandito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm surprised that "Initech" isn't on the list.... mmm. yeah.
- dpk87, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm calling BS. I know people who work at alot of these places, and they are nothing special...
Starbucks... C'mon, All you get is free coffee. Cool for a teenager yes... a carreer? Give me a break.
QuikTrip? Yes, working at a gas station is my dream job.
and so The list goes on with more bad jobs.. - jason_h, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is a bunch of garbage. In order to make this list, Fortune asks the company to poll a certain number of its employees about certain aspects of thier jobs. But get this - it doesn't have to be random. The companies can cherry-pick the employees that they want to take the polls. What's more, the companies have the opportunity to screen the completed polls after they have been taken, giving them the opportunity to "weed out" the bad ones. Pure garbage.
- dilbert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Path-E-Tech should be number one....
- grislygus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"no digg cuz my fav search engine isnt on there!"
Step right up, Ladies and Gentlemen, meet the bottom drudges of the internet gene pool. - cmrick23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was surprised to see a lot of companies listed that primarily offer lower-paying jobs. e.g. Wegman's, Starbucks, QuikTrip. Maybe they should have two lists?
- princess_apple, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1According to Fortune
"About 1,500 companies contacted us or were recruited to participate; of them, 466 finished the exhaustive survey process."
So really the survey should be called
THE TOP 100 COMPANIES OUT OF THE 466 WHO APPLIED. - concreteclam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I worked at Wegmans for a year and a half as a cashier... it was pure hell. My dad's been working there for 15-ish years and has hated pretty much all of it (he can't leave because he has to support our family). Corrupt stuff going on in the background.
I could imagine there's definitely worse places to work, but Wegmans doesn't deserve to be the #2 on that list. - scottso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Keep in mind also that this list only includes public corporations. The vast majority of businesses are not in fact incorporated."
Uhh flattmeister, there are several *privately owned* companies on the list, like Wegmans (#2), SC Johnson (#10), and SAS (#30). And virtually ALL companies, 10 employees or 100,000, are incorporated - the clue is when you see "Inc." after their name. I bet your company is indeed incorporated -- either that, or the owner is paying you straight out of his own pocket, in which case the company is getting raked over the coals in taxes on any profits it earns. - Metal_Hurlant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0w00t. The company I work for is on that list, *and* I happen to be happy at my job.
So it must all be true.
Take that, circumstancial evidence-using nay-sayers! - txwrestler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"#100 - Nike. Except if you work in one of their asian factories. Classy list"
Good Point - jason_h, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ipugh, I worked for QuikTrip and was involved in the process. Fortune's guidelines might say one thing, but there is no enforcement in place to ensure that it happens that way.
- scottso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0flattmeister: No bubble burst. You can be a privately held company and still be incorporated. The way your company is set up, in fact, it's required -- sounds like it may be a LLP or LLC -- both of which are incorporated, in one way or another.
If a company is an entity other than a proprietorship, it's incorporated, for all intents and purposes. You need to file Articles of Incorporation with the state.
I think you're getting private vs. public companies mixed up. Yeah, most companies are small and not traded on a public exchange, but they ARE incorporated.
Take a look: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Incorporation_%28business%29 and
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Types_of_companies - loveandrockets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Man, if more companies treated their employees like Genentech, we (the workers) would be lucky. This list is not made up.
As I said before, my brother works at Genentech and he gets insane pay, lots of vacation, sabbaticals, freedom, flexible hours, cool coworkers who know they have a good thing and therefore are loyal to the company. Damn, I wish I could get in ther. - JayRod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Genentech sounds like a cool company to work for. Nearest facility to my house is 1 1/2 drive away. (Oceanside) Too bad I need more education. AA doesn't cut it.
- osbjmg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As a rule: smaller is better and remember the grass isn't always greener.
- flattmeister, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Scottso, I hate to burst your bubble but virtually all companies are not incorporated. Take an entry level business course and you will find out that there are several different ways for a company to be organized and being incorporated is only one of them. My company, as an example, makes $160 million a year in profits and is not a corporation. We are owned by a conglomeration of oil companies, who serve on the board. So we do have shareholders, the oil company owners, but the shareholders are not the public. There is no stock that is traded on any of the exchanges. If you do the research you will find that the vast majority of companies are in fact considered small businesses and are in fact not incorporated. Yes the inc in their name is a clue, but most companies don't have that distinction. Read these two pages on my company's page and you will see how my company is organized. Good call though on the private companies in the list. I stand corrected.

http://www.colpipe.com/ab_oc.asp - Kericr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A great example of a garbage company on this list is Publix. They report 12% turnover and have a rediculous discrepency between the most common salaried job (store mgr at 100k) and most common hourly job (deli clerk at 23k). Furthermore, if deli clerks are the most common hourly job, this also means that they don't hire a staff of full time cashiers and other store-front customer service personnel, since grocery stores consider working in the deli a promotion.
- EEBaum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The fact that they're all over 1000 people puts none of them on my list.
- Griffen37, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This list is a joke. Law firms are on the list because of the number of pro bono hours and stints at legal aide? Heads up folks -- pro bono hours = hours that usually don't count towards billables but are expected anyway, meaning you work just as hard, aren't compensated, and are still expected to meet your billable targets. It is a real nice thing to do, but that sure as s**t doesn't make it a good place to work.
- Akuinnen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Last time I saw one of these it was when I worked for Sears in IT. Sears was ranked #3 and it claimed Sears gave their IT employees laptops, good pay etc etc. It was so far from the truth I was shocked. The best thing I did was leave that job.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Genentech is a real company?! I thought that was from OfficeSpace or something.
And of course Cisco is on the list. They encourage use of LSD. :) - kohno214, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like being my own boss!
- dimatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0geez, $5000 bonus for a perfect driving year at the Container Store?!? I can't see it being a really interesting job though :p
- panique, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cool Starbucks is on the list. It's reassuring to think that many of the diggsheep around here will now be able to find a job.
- egger_please, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Companies pay to be on this list. I used to work for one of these companies. While it was a very good company to work for, those who had been around a while always joked around when this list came out. Many companies are great to work for and are not on this list. Some are probably better to work at than those on the list.
- bonlebon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0correction M$ is in the top 100, seems their benefits haven't gone down the toilet like the rest.
- MicroBerto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I work for one of those companies, been on that list year in and year out. It's one of the best recruiting tools there are.
Not EVERYTHING is peaches and cream, but I'll tell you, after being at some companies that are horrible to its employees, the difference is absolutely incredible. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"My brother works at Genentech. One day they gave everybody ipod nanos for no reason. It's that good."
They give them away at my company, too. Of course, there are about 45,000 employees. But about 100 of them get ipod nanos every year. They are chosen by nominations from fellow employees and then out of that bunch, random management people that nobody knows picks which ones win. It's rare that you have a clue who the managers or the winners/employees are when you see their names. But I guess 100 free ipod nanos for 45,000 people isn't quite the same as "everyone in the company".
We did get free company-published motivational books about what our "mission" and "goal" is though. Yay. Mine had a nice gluey smell. I loved it. Of course, the ONLY photo in the ENTIRE book was a rather offensive one taking about technology.. it had a black kid living in some foreign slum wearing a torn and dirty yellow shirt with a number on it and no shoes holding a cell-phone shaped rock or piece of dung to his ear.
Maybe it's not offensive. I dunno. I sure found it so, though. -
