- shitfish, on 10/12/2007, -4/+45kevin is already a millionaire, he just hides it very well
- xLiKx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+30gah, making money from his blog? what a great life...
- unimatrixZxero, on 10/12/2007, -6/+29Who would hang around Prager if he was a millionaire. LOL
- oddball, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25So...The submitter is jealous and writes a blog about a successful blog spamer, and then blog spams Digg with his Blog story about a blog, so that he can also make a living spaming with links to his blog?
- tackle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24
"I design and build websites for a living - that doesn't make me a "professional web designer" by any means"
It actually does. Web designing is your profession. That makes you a professional web designer. - tonyhartfield, on 10/12/2007, -8/+26http://www.duggmirror.com/technology/Techcrunch.com_is_a_Millionaire/
- bramkok, on 07/02/2009, -14/+32That guy is an *****:
http://www.valleywag.com/tech/michael-arrington/designer-resigns-after-redesign-maligned-173970.php - Exedus, on 10/12/2007, -10/+26If you think that all Web design involves is "slapping some HTML together", then you sir are the one who needs a dose of reality. I work as a professional web developer for a living and idiotic, uneducated comments like that really piss me off. You obviously have no clue as to the amount of planning and work that are involved in putting together a decent website.
- chubbywookie, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17Ha. I'm a designer AND I used to work for Mike. He was actually one of my favorite bosses, once you take into account that he's only pushing you to get the best out of you. He knows what he wants and he doesn't take any sh*t, and that can be VERY hard for some designers to accept. A lot of designers are of the opinion that because they have a piece of paper hanging on their wall or "I designed suchandsuch.com" they can tell a client/boss what they need. Mike doesn't play that game. He'll listen to you, but if he doesn't agree, you're doing it his way. Judging by the fact that he is a Millionaire, he must be right some of the time! ...Outside of work he's probably one of the nicest people I've ever met. Always buys the beer.
- bramkok, on 07/02/2009, -9/+21Yeah right. That's probably why he still shares a house with friends (that's cool though).
- angelp, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16@chad78 - It's a little more complicated then that. The designer was hearing crap from the whole "blogosphere" about how crappy her design was. Then the Techcrunch guy posts another designer's improvements and comments that he'll be incorporating many of that designer's changes. It was basically a slap in the face to the original designer, in front of thousands of people.
That's a little different than a private exchange between you and the mechanics. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Talking about him makes you seem as giggly as a school girl.
- kidhero, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14Well gee.. let's see... almost every single one of his posts on his blog gets pimped and spammed on Digg endlessly.
Anyone else pointing to their blog for more info gets the shaft yet when Techcrunch is featured you idiots digg it up like it's 1999. - jasonzumd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9$30-$45k a month before expenses...still not bad though, but its not making > $1 million a year
- rtwolf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Heh, that's cute. I guess you're making ten million a year?
A million dollars can go a long way if you're intelligent in investing it. From index investing, to certain mutual funds, to certain mechanical investing techniques to intelligent value investing.
Also keep in mind that this is about a million bucks a year. If he keeps this up for a number of years, that's a number of million dollars.
Why yes, I have noticed inflation. However, a million dollars is still a lot of money today and right now. If you've got a million dollars sittin around, congratulations. But you're still talkin *****. - fishbert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Housing prices in San Fran being what they are, I'm not at all surprised that a millionaire would have to share a home with others.
- JasonPrini, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13Otto, Huge ego is a very good sign someone is NOT professional.
never, ever, hire an "UN-professional web designer" - dootisterhans, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I may be misinformed, but I think that if you have a million dollars you might not have to work anymore. Without putting in any effort, you can earn ~5% on your money. I don't know how taxes work, but before you have to pay them, that would be $50,000. In most parts of the country, that will allow you to live quite comfortably.
If it is enough money to not have to work anymore, then I think it is a lot. - fishbert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@bf01
My apologies... Cali cities were never my strong suit. - angelp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7It's a lot of money when you make it from writing blog posts.
- diggsterminator, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6i think he's pretty deserving. he delivers great news, all the time, better than most tech sites out there.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7"Guys, all you need to know is that the designer was a woman. Explains everything"
Damn, you beat me to making that observation. I just came to that not knowing anything about it previously, then I read the post where the designer says they're resigning and I thought "What kind of web designer is that freakin' catty and vendictive?" Then I scroll down and discover it's a woman and suddenly it all made sense. Now, I'm not sexist, but it's very much a general truth that women are more emotional than men and I believe this kind of situation is much less likely to happen with a male designer. - Xirto, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6How much you've made last year then?
- newdigg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Techcrunch is a great blog. He deserves it if that's true. I do agree, though, that the new theme is NASTY. Thank god for my feed reader.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yeah, hoofarted is full of *****. I know a former boss, a young guy is living extremely comfortable somewhere in Middle America after he took a buyout of under 3 million before the last tech bubble went burst. Sure he could work but instead he enjoys raising his kids and being a primary caregiver to a sick relative. He has investments setup carefully and doesn't get impulsive with money.
Financial security & freedom = true wealth. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"The average 3 bedroom house in London costs you $650 000. "
Dude, the average condo in Manhattan is over 1mil. And 1 million a year is still a lot of money here.
You are retarded.
People take out 10,20,30 year mortgages, not 1 year payment plans.
"I don't earn a million dollars a year but I do earn well. I don't earn dollars, I earn pounds. Good GB pounds! "
A common digg phenomena is the more a digger tries to impress their salary upon other digg users, they less real money they actually earn.
Your money is worth LESS in the UK. Costs of living are higher on average. - forteller, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4No wonder he's making lots of money when almost every blogpost he ever writes gets dugg to the frontpage..
- DrewBlood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@hoofarted - Don't you think that's rather relative? As someone who claimed a piddly 15k last year, I'd be thrilled to make even a small percentage of what he does by writing. A million is a lot to someone who's never seen 25,000.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5The new Techcrunch.com looks like a Nascar uniform, when will there be cigarette or beer ads on his site?
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Its not much to survive for rest of life. But $1million/year is like 100 times minimum wage. Thats a lot of money.
I think it's funny that people believe that a million dollars isnt a lot of money these days. - Eddible, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Wooah I agree, the new design is no where near as nice as the old one.
- sert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2wait, so how is Michael Arrington at fault in any way shape or form here? for whatever reason (ok, whatever, most likely it was because of his bad instructions) the site basically turned out horrible. it's not his responsibilty to try to salvage her reputation by keeping the horrible current design. he didnt even call her out on it, just made it clear that he was considering getting it changed again.
I really just dont get it, this sounds similar to (random example) someone buying a garbage mp3 player from Creative then complaining about it (which he didnt directly do). how is this wrong... - vh1`, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6"Agreed. Though, I have to say, if Arrington really didn't like the final design, why did he let it go up that way? So not only did he ***** up on his own account, but he also makes a web designer look bad, and inept."
where does he say he didn't like the final design though?
all I see is a screenshot and him saying he likes SOME of the ideas. not "I can't wait to ditch this design" - sert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2llbbl, no need to sneak in the database, bottom of the page
- LordLucless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2A million dollars is a lot of money, if you're not going out and spending it. It's half my target for retirement; If I hit 2 million dollars, I can invest it even in a crappy term deposit, make sure it's indexed to keep up with inflation, and live off the interest at around $80,000 a year.
How much a million dollars is worth depends on your lifestyle, and whether you're going to go buy a new ferrari with it, or invest it sensibly. - sole, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3True. I wonder how much the hosting bill is.
- EpicSA, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8Good for him I say. Congratulations Mr. Arrington.
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I'm a millionaire...in pre-euro Italy.
- gburch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"I may be misinformed, but I think that if you have a million dollars you might not have to work anymore. Without putting in any effort, you can earn ~5% on your money. Well that's short sited - read up on something called inflation. You can take that 50,000 and subtract 4-8% a year. Also taxes will take a good chunk in short term gains. 1 million in the bank is not enough to just live off of. - julesp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1charges for the free advertising?
wtf? - topnotchnet, on 10/12/2007, -2/+31,000,000 divided by 2,000 = 500 divided by 12 = 41 years
which means 1million dollars is enough to spend $2,000 a month for approx 41 years
sounds like a lot to me but if ur the type that needs 80k foreign cars and lots of uneeded square footage to
keep up with the jones' then it may not be a lot, but for those that want to sit on their ass from 30 - 70 (black mans life expectancy)
years old in a modest dwelling and reliable transportaion sounds like a good year to me beats being someone slave till u get or dont get soc sec
feel free to donate any money my way that u dont want or think is worth anything - robdavy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Here here!
People seem pissed off that he's doing alright for himself - corewizard, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7Well, I can tell you one thing, he worked his ass off to get there, and I believe that Digg helped him a lot in that...
- sophiaperennis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1TechCrunch.com, together with GigaOm.com, are the golden standard for excellent and precise Web2.0 Technology news. Now all Mike has to do is remove the Radio-Active green from his re-designed site, I suspect it is Kryptonite.
- Superkid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1With everyone scrambling and trying to use the most tech acronyms in their applications and make it "buzz" word compliant, this really goes to show that those who keep ***** simple ... will really win in the end. This bastard is making millions of a damn weblog while others are struggling to find a business model.
Time to get back to the basics. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Um, and youtube is bleeding millions every month in bandwith.
- vh1`, on 10/12/2007, -10/+11why are all these comments getting modded down?
I design and develop for fun, so I will tell you first hand that there's more than "slapping HTML together", but I don't understand all the controversy between mike and rachel
all he did was post a screenshot someone sent him, AFTER complimenting rachel on being awesome, and saying everything good from the new design is her doing, and everything bad is his doing. then she quits? - angelp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2He updates almost every single day.....sometimes several times a day. What website are you looking at?
