- tumples, on 07/28/2008, -7/+409I was waiting for them to say books, and was so glad when it didn't come up.
I like books. - richman241, on 07/28/2008, -10/+322ipods are not dead...the sales are dropping because everyone already has one
- elemenohpe, on 07/28/2008, -7/+194"There are still some places you don't want to take a laptop, like to the beach or the *****"
Wait, what? Who hasn't honestly taken theirs to the *****... - nolesfan247, on 07/28/2008, -30/+205"There are just some things you can't do with a credit card."
- Nicksname1, on 07/28/2008, -12/+185I disagree with more than half of these.
- hackiavelli, on 07/28/2008, -1/+145Oh my god! I read that in the article too!
- Mabx86, on 07/28/2008, -7/+139Probably the greatest last line to any cracked article
- Antz0rz, on 07/28/2008, -2/+123Well. Phonebooks are pretty worthless. Unless you're using them for hitting people. But then you'd have to live in a fairly large city for it to be effective.
- SolidBones, on 07/28/2008, -9/+113This article should be called "***** paper and discs, we have the internet."
And am I the only one who sees/uses this stuff all the time? I mean, a phone book is still usually faster than pulling up yellowpages.com as long as you know the alphabet. - homestarjay, on 07/28/2008, -1/+103What?? No Fax machine? Just die already you stupid machine. Nobody likes you!!
I still can't believe we've had the interwebs for so long and some companies still insist on using fax machines (believe me, there are lots of them). - tehhowch, on 07/28/2008, -7/+107I'm not so sure that some of these are 'technologies.'
- necromancer, on 07/28/2008, -2/+91I used the phonebook the other day to call Comcast because I had no internet.
- orangefly, on 07/28/2008, -3/+75first thing i did with my first wireless....
- mikinurbook, on 07/28/2008, -0/+68If you ever needed a reason not to buy a used laptop...
- brstilson, on 07/28/2008, -3/+61Phone Books - yes I'll agree with that
MP3 Players - Hardly, the only decent music player/phone combination is the iPhone, and that is only available on one carrier. Until everybody has realistic access (i.e. more than one carrier) to an iPhone or at least to something as decent as one, then no, MP3 players aren't going anywhere
DVDs - DVDs are hardly obsolete. Cracked seems to think that because there are some fairly decent download services available, everybody in the world has switched to them. Additionally, downloaded movies still look like ***** on an HDTV. With a DVD and an upscaling player, you can make it look pretty decent. With Blu-Ray it's even better. People aren't going to buy all these big HD sets so they can buy a set top box and download piss-poor-quality movies that pause every 30 seconds to buffer because their ISP's network is bogged down with all the OTHER people trying to download movies.
Magazines, Catalogs, and Newspapers - I'll agree with that, too. Newspapers are getting really pushy these days. They'll call you up assuming you want the subscription, then when you tell them no they act so flabbergasted that you would DARE refuse a newspaper subscription and what the hell kind of person are you anyway? I guess it's their job to act like the internet doesn't offer everything a newspaper does, only cheaper, and better.
Video Games on Disc - See here we go again. A few game developers offer game downloads so Cracked assumes everybody does, and why the hell are we still using discs. The vast majority of games still come on physical media. I'd like to know where we're going to get all this bandwidth to deliver all these terabytes of games and movies. I can see it now, mom's surfing the internet on her laptop in the other room while the kids are trying to watch a movie, only the movie stops to buffer every thirty seconds because mom's downloading music. We don't have the bandwidth to sustain a mass adoption of downloaded movies and games and still maintain decent quality, we just don't.
Cash - I have to admit, I'm a debit card junkie. I rarely carry cash. But I'm reconsidering my position. With the banks crashing and all this financial mess along with the rise in identity theft, keeping my money stored at a bank is becoming less and less attractive. Plus, cash speaks in ways plastic never could. I know someone that bought a piece of land that was selling at $45,000 for $29,000. Why? because he had $29,000 in cash in bank bags that he plopped on the desk. Seeing that much cash does something to a person. Cash is tangible, it's real. You can touch it, feel it. Cash is instant gratification. There are no banks involved, no interest. The money is there, right there, and after the deal is done, it's yours, now. Until cash loses that effect, it'll be around. - blacksteve0, on 07/28/2008, -2/+59Cash will always be around, how else can you buy drugs?
- h4mx0r, on 07/28/2008, -2/+53The last three books I read sucked. One bit my hand, the other tried to suck me into another dimension, and the last one raised the army of the dead.
Would not read again. - IHaveIssues, on 07/28/2008, -3/+53Ever try to transfer music to a Sony/Ericsson phone? It's slow and painful.
- inactive, on 07/28/2008, -3/+51i'm gonna buy soul calibur 4 tomorrow on disc because if i don't love it i'll sell it after a month, can't do that with a downloaded game
- Spire3660, on 07/28/2008, -1/+48NO. The self checkouts are great for small quick purchases, but anything bulky, or requiring age checks or high quantity orders are just a pain in the ass.
- shredswithpiks, on 07/28/2008, -2/+49Your criteria for classifying technology as technology is how long it's been around? That's interesting...
- Herrohkitteh, on 07/28/2008, -4/+48Let me be the first to say.. Checkout clerks should be on that list!
That's right, Walmart checkout guy. Your days are numbered. Everybody likes the do-it-yourself machines more. Your technology has been rendered obsolete.
Welcome to the future. - ttam, on 07/28/2008, -2/+45I call ***** for not including the Fax Machine
- necromancer, on 07/28/2008, -2/+38No kidding... MP3 players, DVDs, Video games on disc, Cash... wtf.
- Triplastic, on 07/28/2008, -1/+37They should have put toilet paper (if money is a technology then so is TP!) on this list.... Everyone uses the 3 sea shells now, don't they?? DON'T THEY!!??!
- catcher6250, on 07/28/2008, -29/+64This article fails in so many ways. Phonebooks are still extremely useful, especially when you don't have access to the internet. iPods??? wtf, are you kidding me, those are going to be around forever (or just built into your phone, but they are still mp3 players none the less). then DVDs???? yeah, when they start making blue-ray PC compatible then we'll talk. Magazines??? Well, I guess we can just assume that everyone has access to a broadband connection and finds it faster to connect to the internet while waiting for their appointment than just picking up a magazine and reading it... and newspapers too rofl, sure... Video games on disc... wow this author is out of ideas now... and cash, you know what, as long as their is organized crime there will be cash. but this maybe the only one i agree with.
- kingmanic, on 07/28/2008, -2/+36"yeah, when they start making blue-ray PC compatible then we'll talk."

So what do you want to talk about? - intregus, on 07/28/2008, -2/+29I think if people want a phone book, they should have to buy it. I haven't cracked one open in years.
- skyteria, on 07/28/2008, -2/+29I'm on one write now, as I type.
- jamangold, on 07/28/2008, -3/+29I didn't agree with a lot of the article, but I did get a good laugh from the line "Selling someone an iPod now is like selling a feces gun to a monkey; he doesn't need it." Say what you want about Cracked.com, they got some damn good comedy writers.
- serif69, on 07/28/2008, -4/+30Call me a Luddite, but I find every single one of these things useful. And I even have broadband internet access that could replace most of these. There is something that is just more satisfying about using analog media like magazines, catalogs, phone books, and cash. I even use *gasp* notebooks to write notes!
- Asrrin29, on 07/28/2008, -7/+32Not if you are Quagmire, GIGGITY!
- WhiskeyLemur, on 06/30/2009, -1/+25My husband bought an e-reader a few months ago.... Start with the fact the fact that 95% of the stuff I want to read isn't available for it - modern sci fi (read: anything more recent than Isaac Asimov) is pretty much non-existent in that format, aside from an absolutely haphazard selection of Anne McCaffrey and Ursula Le Guinn.
I did find a bunch of classics I liked, so despite a distinct paucity of material, I did get a chance to sit down and read. Once you get past the "omg I've got a data-pad" coolness factor, however, it just doesn't have the same cozy feel as reading a book. I can see taking it on a trans-continental flight, because taking one slip gadget beats bringing half the library, but other than that? Give me dead trees any day. - TheUngod, on 07/28/2008, -0/+24Just because there are better ways to get something doesn't mean their predecessor is dead. The masses are slow at adopting new technology, which is why DVD's, magazines, MP3 players, etc. will be around for a much longer time.
- josephbloseph, on 07/28/2008, -0/+24Putting together and marketing an album worth of material is an accomplishment, the media is arbitrary.
dick - DiggzDE, on 07/28/2008, -2/+25I think the correct term is bookworm. And I've always found that term to be endearing.

- scarwars, on 07/28/2008, -0/+21let me tell you a little secret,
yes they are. - ripter, on 07/28/2008, -0/+20When I have a cart full of food, I'm not scanning and bagging all that ***** myself, let the boy do it.
- JonTheGoose, on 07/28/2008, -0/+19I think it's a bit early to call most of these things on this list dead. Instead of cash though, checks should be on the list. Every time I'm standing behind someone in a checkout line and they whip out a ***** checkbook and pen I want to punch them in the head.
- FiendishMuffin, on 07/28/2008, -0/+19I used a fax machine for the first time when I started working for my current employer. I have to have someone show me how to use it. Nothing brought more joy to my 50 year old boss than to show the hot ***** tech savvy kid how to use the fax machine.
- DiggzDE, on 07/28/2008, -0/+18I'm sorry sir, but you have been declined.
- Snakedal337, on 07/28/2008, -1/+19I just had to send a fax the other day, NO ONE HAS THESE MACHINES ANY MORE! I ended up going to office max and receiving it there. I don't understand why something can't be emailed if it can be faxed. Scan it into a PDF and send it on its way!
- matroska1, on 07/28/2008, -0/+18Easy there killer.. sometimes we just didn't hit the bank recently and stopped by to get gas and other things. More importantly, they probably get some benefit from their rewards program for making credit purchases vs nothing for cash. Surely you can appreciate getting something or nothing? Not to mention getting more change to keep track of is annoying.
Still, I disagree with the article and hope cash never gets phased out. It just feels good to open your wallet and look down on those green bills. - antler, on 07/28/2008, -0/+17Perhaps you should leave your bear outside next time?
- darkphenox, on 07/28/2008, -0/+16because the music portion of the phone usually drains its battery and leaves the phone useless, well thats what I find.
- cdigioia, on 07/28/2008, -2/+18"Who hasn't honestly taken theirs to the *****..."
Those of us without constipation? - KesshoRyu, on 07/28/2008, -0/+15How do you own an EMP? "See that pulse there? It's mine. I payed for it."
All you need is a nice Faraday cage and you will be fine. - voyvf, on 07/28/2008, -1/+16You know, calling someone a nerd via an internet forum is rather silly; like the pot calling the kettle black.
Not that there's anything wrong with being a nerd. We typically make more money, for one thing. :D -
