http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Real_Alternative.htm - grantj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Would be cool but they went with RealNetworks. So you'll have to install RealPlayer and everything else that automagically gets installed with it.
- rotielover, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"All but the most tech-savy" can install a TV tuner card? In this age of technology, that is one of the simplest upgrades you can make. I would rather do that than install Real Player with all it's invasive software.
- linuxbox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Xvid! Xvid! Xvid! Xvid! Xvid! Xvid! Xvid! Apple. WMV and realplayer all suck.
- ,,|,_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hummm... You can get Time Warner broadband without paying for cable TV. I wonder if those people get free IPTV as well?
- Jiu-Jitsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is long overdue. It looks like it will be going over the net and not specifically just through the Time Warner cable. This means it wont be to long before there is a hack so everyone can watch cable offer the net. I don't think you should even have to pay to watch it since they force me to watch the commercials.
Think about it networks like ABC and NBC offer their signal for free if you can pick it up. They offset the cost through advertisements; if I pay to get FX network I should not have any commercials. That's just my 2 cents! - valan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"this is still a pretty cool and innovative idea. I'd use it for a small fee.. I'd say 50% of the regular cable price."
You'd actually pay 50% more to watch drm'd tv that you already subscribe to in a crappy player? You can already download hdtv with no commercials for free. - realnebby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I argee with grantj. RealPlayer is awful. I would love to see Apple work with content providers (NBC, ABC, Comedy Central, etc.) to provide this type of functionality in an iDVR box without having to use a cablebox or cablecard.
- DeVryGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lets hope to see it nationwide soon. Time Warner already offers the best DVR I've ever used, so it'd be cool to see them offer everyone this service as well.
- Jiu-Jitsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Real Player is a piece of crap
- dude3609, on 10/12/2007, -0/+09,000? pfft..
- brucebeh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is still a pretty cool and innovative idea. I'd use it for a small fee.. I'd say 50% of the regular cable price.
- SDNick484, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Time Warner in San Diego is a ridiculous ripoff (second most expensive provider in CA as of a year ago). Their minimum digital cable package costs more than my two room DirecTV with (dual tuner Tivo's in each) per month (and the only special they offer is 29.95 for like 3 months). Furthermore, it's fairly trivial to modify a DirecTV Tivo (well model dependent I guess, it's easy on my Philips 704) and throw on a larger HDD and FTP daemon. Going the modded Tivo route, you can get any chanel you want on your PC in higher quality.
- barbobot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I always thought something like this would be a good idea, but not streaming video, and not real, and not drm'd to death
- VictorV, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hope they spread it nation wide, because I have Time Warner cable.
- mrjasoncwood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Forget putting channels on the web for viewing. Put individual shows like systm and commandn. Let's pay for those, letting the good shows profit, the networks die, and crap disappear!!!!!
- Gavin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sounds good..
- JayFyve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Atlantic Canadians can also get 10 free digital channels for free with a subscription to Aliant's Ultra High Speed. It works pretty good, but only with IE.
- Doubtfulsalm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why don't you just get a TV tuner?
- Warpling, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm in San Diego and can't figure out how to sign up!!! and I have Timewarner!
- metamorphosis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It might help put cable in more houses, although I think wireless will take over cable and dsl in the future.
- MykeXX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree if we are paying for a channel then there should be no ads/commercials
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have a TV tuner card on my PC and can view only local channels 1-82 which is basic cable. Does anyonw know if there is any sotware for Pc's w/ cablecoax card that mimmic digital tuner boxes? If so would this give me the option to unlock more channels like a black box?
- plefno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Every story I read today seems to have something to do with Realplayer. bleh
- TKDWILSON, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0""""Don't like Real Player?

I got it. It doesn't work for everything. I wish it did. I refuse to download real player though. I just don't watch or listen to the content is real alternative doesn't do the trick.
Eric Wilson - motionblur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Atlantic Canadians can also get 10 free digital channels for free with a subscription to Aliant's Ultra High Speed. It works pretty good, but only with IE."
If it only works in IE then it doesn't work "pretty good". - CoconutKC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It'd be sweet if I could find out how to get it! =)
- valan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I bet real alternative won't even work with it, what with all the proprietary technology and drm
- goduke06, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0this is a dupe and its like 3 weeks old
