Swedish Record Labels See Filesharing as Virtue
torrentfreak.com — While the RIAA sues its customers, and blames filesharing for the decrease in record sales, a coalition of seven independent Swedish record labels explores alternatives that make use of the Internet and filesharing technology.

4. PROFIT- dsmx, on 02/28/2008, -1/+2South Park will forever be remembered for that bit.
- nekochan, on 02/28/2008, -0/+4the bit will probably be remembered even longer than south park.
- Antyrael, on 02/28/2008, -0/+8That bit came from South Park?
- dsmx, on 02/29/2008, -0/+3See Underpants knomes south park episode.
- insurgente, on 02/29/2008, -0/+1Hopefully we can get rid of the profit stage, once we get there, we have arrived.
- dsmx, on 02/28/2008, -1/+2South Park will forever be remembered for that bit.
- fkr3, on 02/28/2008, -10/+3And TorrentFreak's made of garbage carefully engineered to get diggs. First paragraph plays that tired old argument about how people "would" pay if [conditions] were met. Those conditions have been met time and again without success because people just want to take, they don't want to pay unless they've exhausted every other possibility.
The only thing the label said was 'great' about filesharing is that you can upload your tracks the day you get the masters instead of waiting for an album to be cut, marketed and distributed, and that's a general argument for using the internet as a distribution method - which most labels are doing already - rather than the pro-piracy argument you guys want to hear.- mickhead, on 02/28/2008, -2/+4The conditions that need to be met are reasonable prices. These conditions have not been met.
- fkr3, on 02/28/2008, -3/+189 cents at Amazon. If that's too much buy one less cup of coffee this week and you can afford 4 or 5 songs instead.
- Antimatter3009, on 02/28/2008, -0/+2I don't know, the conditions were met for me me with Amazon. I was one of the ones who said and felt that I would buy if there was no DRM and the prices were reasonable. Amazon is DRM-free and a bit pricey for single songs (IMO), but I exclusively buy full albums, for which I feel the prices are fair. So, since Amazon started I haven't acquired any album I could find there in any other way. I still come across the odd artist that doesn't have their music there, but it's become pretty rare.
- mickhead, on 02/28/2008, -2/+4The conditions that need to be met are reasonable prices. These conditions have not been met.
- TheReport, on 02/28/2008, -3/+15I love Sweden. Their women are beautiful, their music is great, and their views on filesharing are absolutely brilliant

- cvh™, on 02/28/2008, -0/+7The reason why swedes love to pirate is that it takes a ***** of time for things to reach Europe...
I would buy allot more games if they just ***** Germany, France, Spain and Italy in the pooper and gave me the game the same time as the Americans. I don't want do wait for the translators to masturbate themselves to sleep.- Tenoq, on 02/29/2008, -0/+2Dugg for masturbate themselves to sleep.

- AFrei, on 02/28/2008, -6/+31***** the RIAA!
- Audacitor, on 02/28/2008, -2/+23Simply awesome. I expect we Americans will be the last to adopt the new model.
- Nillerus, on 02/29/2008, -0/+1Nah, Denmark mate. We're actually a lot worse off here, at least you have judges making sane rulings. Blast, I remember Denmark as being way cooler than it is now... I blame reality TV!
- canuck102, on 02/28/2008, -2/+15Finally, some common sense.
- Senn, on 02/28/2008, -2/+16Hey UK Government, you're reading this, right?
- dbrisinda, on 02/28/2008, -1/+9Common sense speaks about the lawsuits the RIAA has started against music fans:
“It’s insane. It can only have bad consequences. I don’t see how they can think antagonizing the listeners will help them secure any of their much desired income.” - XmenArt, on 02/28/2008, -2/+4It's encouraging to see legal torrent sites like http://www.wortharchiving.com and legittorrents.info working to distribute free content, sadly I think the RIAA will continue to do what it does best, kill all competition no matter what form it comes in.
If torrents mean that record companies lose money, legal or not they're gonna fight it. Look at the ridiculous lawsuit they lodged against the RIO when the first MP3 player came out. Remember the fuss they made when cassette tapes could be copied? They seem to believe that every new form of content distribution will bankrupt them. - shinigami052, on 02/28/2008, -2/+11Hey at least someone gets it. Don't fight P2P it's in your best interest to work with it. Keep your friends close but your enemies closer. LISTEN UP RIAA! Take a lesson from Sweden.
- bryceman111, on 02/28/2008, -2/+10Double ***** the RIAA!
- Jamnajar, on 02/28/2008, -1/+4I wish the RIAA would get their head out of their @ss and see the world for what it is!
- Depthfunction, on 02/28/2008, -1/+4Swedish music rocks, btw.

- JQP123, on 02/28/2008, -7/+1"But please don’t for a second think that it will go away or that you can solve it like it is a problem."
I think I can solve it:
Step 1: Stop selling CDs. The main reason piracy is rampant is because the content is so easily obtained anonymously.
Step 2: Move to a subscription only model like cable TV or satellite radio. Music is only available as a streamed service to an approved device.
Step 3: Work out arrangements with the telecommunication companies to use cell phone towers as distribution points. Include music subscription as an option with cell phone service.
There --- problem solved. Next!- freezerburn819, on 02/29/2008, -0/+1step 4: PROFIT!!!!!
- JQP123, on 02/29/2008, -1/+1Ok, so people don't like my solution because; a) they think it won't work or; b) they think it might work but they don't like the outcome?
- ichserbe, on 02/28/2008, -0/+3Finally a little logic, and "old dinosaurs" for the record companies trying to hold onto the old days is right. It is like someone 15 years ago trying to resist the transition from cassette tapes to CDs.
- scribat, on 02/28/2008, -0/+4It's about ***** time. When will all the other record labels realise that people will stop pirating their music when they stop charging us through the nose for CDs so their fatass company directors can get their outrageous bonuses?
- johanm, on 02/28/2008, -7/+1I dare anyone to name one of the artists on these record labels
- alpha94, on 02/28/2008, -1/+11Well it would probably help TO BE SWEDISH. Geez.
- bzkt, on 02/28/2008, -0/+1Good intiative, but these are small record labels. All major record labels in Sweden are strongly against file sharing.
- insurgente, on 02/29/2008, -1/+1Major record labels don't release too much good music anyway, so the loss isn't great.
- fkr3, on 02/29/2008, -0/+1.... I think you somehow confused major and small's meanings.
- insurgente, on 02/29/2008, -1/+1Major record labels don't release too much good music anyway, so the loss isn't great.
- ultraJesus, on 02/28/2008, -1/+1I would love to pay for music, but there is just too much riaa style ***** and the cds are way too expensive. As much as I love a band I really can't justify spending up to 25 dollars on a cd.
- accelleron, on 02/28/2008, -2/+19Dear Sweden:
Please invade the United States, conquer us, and restore sanity to our government. And bring some Swedish blondes.
Thank you.- Radan, on 02/28/2008, -0/+6We'll send a couple of longships right away. However, we demand a lifetime supply of mead and a cheese sandwich.
- cvh™, on 02/28/2008, -0/+4när åker vi?
- insurgente, on 02/29/2008, -0/+2Ingvar Kamprad already invaded the US with his culturally imperialist corporation IKEA.
- Radan, on 02/28/2008, -0/+6We'll send a couple of longships right away. However, we demand a lifetime supply of mead and a cheese sandwich.
- heystoopid, on 02/28/2008, -0/+1Well , the big three mafia music conglomerates were warned about the consequences back last century that ultimately their own greed will be their downfall !
- MnKoolaid, on 02/28/2008, -0/+2Canada is doing something similar. They use a tracking system to record the number of downloads and the government pays a stipend to the record labels. It's not perfect but it is a good start.
- Supurcell, on 02/29/2008, -1/+2That's a terrible plan.
- rentacow, on 02/29/2008, -1/+0That's an excellent complete thought. Please don't hesitate to kill yourself if the though ever comes to mind.
- Supurcell, on 02/29/2008, -1/+2That's a terrible plan.
- sponeil, on 02/28/2008, -2/+2I'm sure I'll get Dugg down into oblivion for this one, and I'm definitely opposed to the RIAA lawsuits, but isn't it true that bands that no one has ever heard of benefit the most from bootleg or pirated copies of their music? It doesn't sound like they're doing this out of altruism, but because most of the rest of the world doesn't listen to their music.
Sorry guys, but my faith in human nature is pretty weak (not for specific people, but in general).- sponeil, on 02/28/2008, -2/+2I forgot to mention that my faith is even weaker any time money is involved. The more money involved, the weaker the faith.
- ArandiaT, on 02/29/2008, -0/+2While their motivations are almost certainly not altruistic, in the end it'll be them and us the consumers who win.
Does it really matter why they're doing/saying it, so long as everyone's better off? (Except the RIAA, of course... but ***** them)
- SuspicionVandit, on 02/28/2008, -5/+1who cares? Christian Bale and Terminator 4 FTW
- icutcheese, on 02/28/2008, -4/+0Jeffe, could it be that once again the swedes just play crappy music that no one will buy anyway?
- bdbr, on 02/28/2008, -0/+3American independent record labels have also acknowledged that file sharing has been a boon for them. Its free advertising, basically. Despite all the dire news about record labels "dying", independent labels are GROWING in the current environment, and now make up about 30% of total record sales. They succeed because they develop a relationship between band and listener; the RIAA labels just want to be pushers of inane pop.
- lhughett, on 02/28/2008, -0/+0there's no real plan here.
it's just pro P2P.- stratosonic, on 02/29/2008, -0/+0It isn't about a plan. It's about adopting a new ideology that the stuffy old model of record labels and the RIAGAY are unwilling to adopt due to greed. they didn't say they have all the answers just the right idea and i back them on that...Sweden, you're OK by me!
- lhughett, on 02/29/2008, -0/+0maybe they shouldn't have called it "The Swedish Model" then, as that makes it sound like a business model (or a tall hot blonde)... why not "The Swedish Ideology"? or "Swedish Record Labels are O.K. with File Sharing!" or "We haven't figured out a way to incorporate file-sharing into a business plan, but until then we'll just say that we like file sharing to pander to the kids who steal our records and hate the RIAA"? but that's a bit long.
