- jabbajabba, on 01/22/2009, -0/+63I am just happy to have a job at the moment.
- inactive, on 01/22/2009, -3/+60Working in IT is like getting kicked in the balls all day long.
- saleen761, on 01/22/2009, -1/+52As layoffs ensue, top talent gets raises. On the same note, top talent loses morale after getting blamed for everything that goes wrong.
- theNazz, on 01/22/2009, -3/+47Compared to the 40% drop in currency value since 2002, most people still took a big pay cut.
- Navicerts, on 01/22/2009, -0/+39I work IT and I got a raise.
On a related note there used to be TWO of us working IT :( - JasonCox, on 01/22/2009, -0/+32Can someone send this to my boss? I haven't seen a salary increase since 2007.
- fabkebab, on 01/22/2009, -0/+26That's probably because pay rises are issued in the first half of the year at most companies - I think you would have to be pretty optimistic to expect much of a raise in 2009
- JammoBlammo, on 01/22/2009, -0/+23IT degree != IT professional
- Navicerts, on 01/22/2009, -0/+18Don't let the nay sayers get you down. If that's what you want to do then more power to you, enjoy life :)
- blackinthmiddle, on 01/22/2009, -0/+15I know I'm wasting my time here, but how exactly are you an IT professional if you're working behind a counter in a gas station?
- Navicerts, on 01/22/2009, -0/+15Maybe he got a degree but decided he is happy with 18k/yr @ a gas station.... I see nothing wrong with that, I mean people need gas after all.
On second thought maybe I can automate his current job.... hmm... - dvpower, on 01/22/2009, -2/+17Not sure what a currency drop has to do with it, unless you earn your money in one currency and live in another currency area. Inflation maybe, so if inflation was more than 4.6% last year, then you have an effective pay cut.
- kylere, on 01/22/2009, -1/+15That is because every IS/IT department has cut half of its staff and expects those remaining to do three times as much work.
- jonathandyer, on 01/22/2009, -0/+14"more money is worth more" I think thats wrong. If everyone had more money then the price of goods would go up, making your more money worth less.
- PinkyTheWinky, on 01/22/2009, -1/+14I think he means he studied IT and then instead of working in IT he works behind a gas station counter.
- MacEnvy, on 01/22/2009, -2/+15That's why you should be a government contractor. We still get raises :)
- rytr23, on 01/22/2009, -2/+14Kudos for doing your own thing.. however, the fact that an educated, able bodied person with a valuable skill set went on welfare, voluntarily, is ***** irresponsible and embarrassing. Good luck with music though.
- dvpower, on 01/22/2009, -0/+12What is this 'salary increase' you speak of?
- dvpower, on 01/22/2009, -0/+11Or the english teachers.
- bram, on 01/22/2009, -0/+11It is probably because you are screwing around on digg when you should be working!
- rytr23, on 01/22/2009, -0/+11I think your forgot the /Sarcasm tag... I hope.
- Bloodwine, on 01/22/2009, -0/+10I'd say IT workers deserved it, as most of them work more than 40 hours a week. It's one of the higher stress and under appreciated fields. A lot of the IT people I know daydream about leaving the field entirely, so they can enjoy their tech passion as a hobby.
- dvpower, on 01/22/2009, -0/+10The figures quoted in the article are USD figures.
- qwertycopter, on 01/22/2009, -0/+10Also note they only list American cities and the WSJ is primarily an American publication (although there is a European edition). It's pretty clear the article is referring to American salaries.
- hoowahman, on 01/22/2009, -0/+9I have never heard the word plex used around in my IT department made up of 100+ employees. o_O
- MacEnvy, on 01/22/2009, -0/+9You have no idea what you're talking about. I've been in IT for 8 years, and I'm certainly not qualified to be a Senior Network Engineer. These are people with real responsibilities and advanced skill sets - which you clearly lack.
- inactive, on 01/22/2009, -3/+11America's bright future.
- SteaminTmann, on 01/22/2009, -1/+9That's what the managers at my company are telling unhappy employees.... It's just wrong
- RealmDown, on 01/22/2009, -4/+11Before you go go
Don't leave me buried in the comments so low
Digg me UP before you go go
Make a witty replyyyyy !
WHAM! What an 80's moment. I'm better now. - blqysmg, on 01/22/2009, -0/+7The company I work for stopped giving annual raises in 2002, making the normal raise period 18 months, and has now suspended any raise increases or bonuses for at least the year 2009. Even though I've been promoted twice, and get good reviews, I've only gotten three raises since 2002, and none of them over 4.5%. My team has been cut in half, and there is a public plan to cut American and European workers by many thousands.
Times are hard, I'm happy to have a job at all. For those who have gotten a raise in the last year or will get one this year, count yourself among the lucky. - kayfouroh, on 01/22/2009, -2/+9Funny, I lost 7% in 2008.
***** economy. - dvpower, on 01/22/2009, -0/+7Yes you did.
- clockdist, on 01/22/2009, -0/+7What's a "plex?"
- slantyeyed, on 01/22/2009, -0/+7it's not even a raise if it's not more than inflation.
- JWin, on 01/22/2009, -3/+9Since November last year, I've had to cut 3 positions and freeze salary increases until further notice. Can't say my employees were at all happy.
- anon4031, on 01/22/2009, -0/+6less than 90k in DC for a net engineering. thats not that great for that skill set. I'm a sr net eng in DC and make 115k. I'm surprised the salary rates for high cost of living areas.
- FearisFailure, on 01/22/2009, -0/+6You and me both even if I am getting ***** on.
- melonhedd, on 01/22/2009, -0/+6Computer janitors for the loss.
- blackinthmiddle, on 01/22/2009, -0/+5That was the case for me. I got a 3% raise, but it was like in March of '08. Now...I'm just happy I'm still working.
- inactive, on 01/22/2009, -0/+5That must be why my company refuses to hire enough of them.
- ThsGuyRightHere, on 01/22/2009, -0/+5Note that it's the average IT worker who's still employed who got a raise. If the survey took into account those who were employed last year but not employed this year, that number would be much different.
- carlosos, on 01/22/2009, -0/+5Like BadAsh71 said you have to get a better job with that pay. I make about the same amount of money even with a Master degree (even 4.0 GPA) and CCNA but I only work half time. The job market sucks but you might have to move to a different city. That is what I did after I didn't find any IT jobs within a 40 miles radius from me for 4 months.
At the moment I read about Microsoft Exchange because it seems like every company only uses that and don't want to hire someone without Exchange skills. - genericdigger, on 01/22/2009, -0/+5Holy *****, I almost make 1/7th of that
- jonathandyer, on 01/22/2009, -0/+5I get one every 6 months, ahhh I love working IT for the government.
- SuperVepr308, on 01/22/2009, -1/+6I have averaged anywhere from 4% to 10% in my years as an I/T dude. I expect this year will be in the 4% range though. The key is to not compartmentalize yourself and learn a bit of everything. I have learned everything from Windows, Novell, CISCO to Avaya, Intermec, etc, etc over the years and it helps keep you needed. Never focus on just one thing (those are the guys I have seen come and go over the last 15 years).
- pcpimpster, on 01/22/2009, -0/+4Hey spydy, I'm sure anon is doing something a little more advanced then setting up a pre-configured netgear router for his mammal.
Now go wipe the snot off your nose. I hear the cashier bell at Geek Squad dinging. - frostbyt, on 01/22/2009, -1/+5So true.
- dvpower, on 01/22/2009, -0/+4Yeah, but what about the stuff you are forgetting. I'm forgetting more than I learn these days.
- td001, on 01/22/2009, -0/+4Every year, for the last 8 I've seen a minimum of 5% increase in compensation, watched my insurance costs far exceed that ratio, and this year we're told NO increase. btw. THIS years insurance premiums are up 20%!!!
I guess I should happy to still have an IT job... but it DOESN't mean i have to like it!!! - 1773nium, on 01/22/2009, -0/+4Yes and No, it's from the Office and is Dwight Schrutes title. You probably don't know about it because you are busy being an excellent employee and getting your 39% raise.
Whatever you are doing keep up the good work. -
