- danielrh9, on 10/12/2007, -3/+39Well, let's see...
1938 - "Tough is putting mildly the treatment your going to get!"
2006 - "Lolz, t0gh is mildly putt1ng how youre getin p0wned."
I think I'll take 1938, thank you very much. - marcME222, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20I never thought I'd ever get to read the first issue...
+digg. This is awesome. - palakt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13posting this in pdf would be appreciated.
- outlawed, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18That's kind of dumb to let everyone know what your address is, if you were serious.
- epheterson, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16Creepy! The address on the color-page contest is MINE! I live at that address, just in florida instead of NY.

- soogy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10No longer rare? May be a joke, but the reality is that it's in fact so rare, that it's the most valuable of any comic book to date.
It's valued at $375,000, but this guy offered a lot more:
http://collectibles.about.com/cs/comicbooks/a/blprcomic103103.htm - quicksilver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Well that saved me $375,000 to be able to read the the First Comic of Superman. Thx

(adjusted color, contrast, page alignment) - Mesach, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Yes, but if you look at the 3rd to the last frame of the comic you will see that it seemed to be very progressive for the time
- darkdaedra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Yes... 27... Now I am forever shamed for my nerd faux pas.
- BlindIrishman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Its called a scanner
- Maeser, on 10/12/2007, -10/+16Does anybody else find it amusing that an american icon was co-created by a Canadian?
//Not trying to flame, I swear - Kii666, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6A friend of mine has the original Superman cartoon on DVD, and it's loaded with WW2 propaganda. I think there was even an episode where Superman was beating up on Hilter.
- lukas88, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9no jczer, you don't belong on digg. This is clearly a nerd-worthy submission.
- Disease, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The contest on the back is great
"$25 Cash Prizes! A cash award of $1 will be paid to the best 25 pages submitted." - aahamedi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6made a pdf for any one who wants it http://www.filelodge.com/files/room21/557469/Superman%20%23%201.pdf and another host for it http://homepage.mac.com/WebObjects/FileSharing.woa/wa/default?user=aahamedi&templatefn=FileSharing9.html&xmlfn=TKDocument.9.xml&sitefn=RootSite.xml&aff=consumer&cty=US&lang=en
- drawkbox, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Yeh its definitely cool but I am much happier with the comics of today. It would be cool to have but how the hell did they think these things threatened society with writing like that?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7type "action comics #1" and .cbr or .cbz in google.
Comics are shared in renamed .rar or .zip formats, rather than .pdf - JFetch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6You are thinking of Captain America. Superman had red, yellow, and blue. comics were always used as war propaganda, and still are. that wasn't the original intent for Superman though.
- PDelahanty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Hadn't you heard? Superman's a dick.
Here's proof: http://www.superdickery.com/ - rolypolyman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Gussy it up all you want... Superman is still a dick.
http://www.superdickery.com/galleries.html - JFetch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I like how at first, he was just strong. He couldn't fly, he didn't have heat or xray vision. He just leapt everywhere he went. Do you think it would have lasted this long if they didn't add those powers?
- slickfire, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9classy
- DDRSkata, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Detective Comics 27, you mean.
- scheper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3His crayon broke.
- darkdaedra, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I remember one was sold for about $250k a couple of years ago.
- Quash, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The inventor or basketball was also Canadian. Superman and basketball is this least we could give to our American cousins, given that we steal all their hot women!
- elpayo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4But sadly, you can't spell 'wield' correctly.
- BlindIrishman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Why can't we have coloring contests nowadays? I'm not an artist or cartoonist but I know how to weild my crayons.
- Areku, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah, Superman's kind of a bastard in these. Pretty funny for the guy's first appearance ever...
- tobias1482, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Think bigger scope for the question. I had a friend that worked on a project that digitized copies of National Geographic. They literally cut the spine of off each issue that they digitized to run it through the scanners. There were issues that they didn't have on archive that they paid top dollar for ( $10,000) only to then cut them all to hell.
I think that this is a legitimate question. Especially, with only about 100 known copies of this comic in existence that are valued at $25,000 - $500,000 depending on the condition. I would hate to see that happen. - Alchemeron, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Superman actually started a few years earlier as a newspaper comic strip and Action Comics #1 is an adaptation of some of those early strips. In those, Superman was colored red... and his colors of blue, red, and yellow probably have more to do with the fact that those were the only colors available, rather than having anything to do with the American flag.
The "American Way" is a somewhat outdated notion, but Truth and Justice are worldly ideals with very little to do with politics and nationalism. - topher1078, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The character seems closer to the modern character of Batman than the standard notion of Superman - he seems like a big badass in this. Awesome find.
- Alchemeron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It's all about context. "Flying" didn't exist in 1938. If someone was levitating, it was a fantasy story about myth and magic. No one could fly or do anything of the things heros in comics do today without having some magic gem or a genie granting a wish... Superman of 1938 did all the amazing things that they could think of a reasonable explanation for. Thus the comparison to the same way an ant can lift an object many times its own body, so too can a Superman from an alien planet whose inhabitants were millions of years evolved beyond us -- just as we are millions and millions of years above a single-celled organism.
A little suspension of disbelief doesn't hurt, either, and is prerequisite for all the superheroes and stories that Superman helped inspire. - MiamiGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I was actually entertained by it. It made me chuckle.
- brandizzle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Even if he wasn't created to be propaganda he still would have reflected the times...and at that time everyone was very devoted to their country and believed in all the other propaganda.
- Presentlight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This comic is worth half a million or more on the market today...cha-ching.
- Trjn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The American flag (just like the French, British and a fair few others) doesn't feature yellow.
Anyhow, I didn't see mention of "truth, justice and the American way" in this one, which is what he was meant to be fighting for. Then again, Superman Returns cuts it off at "truth and justice" (as far as I recall from the trailers).
I prefer Superman in this form, for some reason, it's a lot easier to accept him without heat vision, xray vision, flight and any other powers that he now has that I forget. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3A scan-ner? Surely not. I'm sure it was some kind of "web-camera."
- wakasm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2actually - it only gives 25 $1 dollar prizes. So at least your odds are good ;)
- typecase, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2According to the new mythos, Superman has a tiny forcefield eminating around him that protects his suit.
- CamperBob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Midichlorians?
- spidoman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2haha that'a great, "FAINTED!"
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Superman was much more interesting in his original appearances. Back then, he was fighting corruption and helping the little guy, instead of being some douchebag facist with absurd powers and no weaknesses fighting crazy space aliens and *****. This is a great read, just to see how ***** up he's gotten.
- Rickler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow Superman is really violent and forceful there... breaking in homes, beating people up, smashing there cars, kidnapping them... lol.
- PunchMeIBleed, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4he seems like hes harrasing all those people, lol it looks really funny
- Badaudio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i cant believe i read it like a manga....i feel so stupid
- yahoofrom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Isn't superman supposed to be a good guy?
- samdu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Do this many people honestly have this little respect for the nation's past?
