- kevizzy37, on 12/12/2007, -0/+67Hey now... When the King of Nigeria is trying to liquidate his assets and the rest of you toss it off as "spam", I will be on my own yacht, sailing the Pacific with a limitless supply of Viagra...
- swordedge, on 12/12/2007, -3/+54Only 95%? I thought it was more like 99%
- fluxingtontheIV, on 12/12/2007, -1/+31It was probably spam
- chris4404, on 12/12/2007, -2/+30You still get spam the difference being you just don't see it.
- chucksmooth, on 12/12/2007, -0/+25if you still are @hotmail.com then you already know this
- inactive, on 12/12/2007, -2/+26OVER 9000!!!
- ppjsmith, on 12/12/2007, -2/+24So its about the same percentage rate now as snail mail. Wish I could put a spam filter on my post office mailbox.
- bahamutxd, on 12/12/2007, -0/+18.. and a shlong the size of a summer sausage - with a GREAT mortgage!
- Devan612, on 12/12/2007, -0/+17Yah, and it's all in my inbox.
The only time I give out my e-mail, is to pay bills online.
Is Cox or Edison Electric just handing that ***** out? - Todamont, on 12/12/2007, -0/+16It should be a crime to send spam, oh wait...
- lnxfi, on 12/12/2007, -0/+15Wasn't there an article on Digg a few days ago saying how spam mail was on the decline?
- liquisoft, on 12/12/2007, -0/+14Somehow Google manages to sift through all of this spam. I swear, I only see a spam mail sneak through maybe once every few months.
- McGrude, on 12/12/2007, -1/+15I monitor the SpamAssassin logs at work and 80 to 85 percent is spam during the week and 90 to 95 percent is on the weekends.
- dondara, on 12/12/2007, -0/+12and the Newest 2008 repl1ca watch3s collection!
- objectcode, on 12/12/2007, -0/+12unless you check your spam
- zspeed78, on 12/12/2007, -0/+11You can find both sides of everything on the internet...
- MindTrigger, on 12/12/2007, -2/+13Are you really that butthurt about a graph? Man, you need to unplug and go get some sun.
- Calcipher, on 12/12/2007, -0/+10It just takes a small percentage of people buying something form the spam to turn huge profits for the spammers.
- TypeEE, on 12/12/2007, -0/+10 V1agra?
and
V1a Gra? - rebelrogue995, on 12/12/2007, -1/+11What an awful graph. I'm not against bar charts, or Excel - but this is poor handling of data. The choice of graph, and the way the data was used to create this rather clunky chart fails to relay the idea. I'd choose an XY scatter or line graph, or not have one at all- it isn't necessary in order to drive the point home.
It just look unprofessional, and frustrates me. - drummerman109, on 12/12/2007, -0/+9I haven't seen spam in my inbox at all for a long time now, prolly a few months if not more. It's quite impressive considering the count in my spam box is currently at 2394 (i never check it, just let it auto-delete)
- umdigger, on 12/12/2007, -0/+9Forward your other accounts to gmail. :)
- saunders45, on 12/12/2007, -0/+8With a Russian mail order bride!!!
- gtlogic, on 12/12/2007, -0/+8I guess he's upset because they don't have gradients or 3d effects. You know, because those are required to make the graph readable.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 12/12/2007, -0/+7Yeah but you will have 1000 dead rich relatives you never knew about, by the time you hear all their Will readings you will be too old to enjoy the money.
- nedaf7, on 12/12/2007, -0/+7If you're talking about things like weekly advertisements from Amazon or something, unsubscribing works great. However, if they are really spam and you click "unsubscribe", you are basically verifying that there is someone on your end reading the e-mails, making you a larger target for spam.
- MindTrigger, on 12/12/2007, -0/+7Google has commented on this. They say the main things that help them combat spam so well are the users reporting spam using the "Report Spam" button, and because they are able to throw people at the problem at Google. In other words, they have a large staff of people dealing with spam.
I had to explain this to my client when they tried to compare their Exchange server to Google. They didn't get it. Very few companies can throw resources at a problem like Google can. - rdoger6424, on 12/12/2007, -0/+7dictionary attacks, I'd assume.
- rudy23, on 12/12/2007, -0/+7and a credit score of one hundred thousand millions
- keyme, on 12/12/2007, -0/+6My Gmail gets ~700 new messages a day, 690 of them are spam. The good thing is that Gmail treats spam the way it should, and unless the "Spam" figure on the left, I wouldn't know this at all.
- r00tus3r, on 12/12/2007, -0/+6Not to mention your Free Lotto winnings!
- scabbers, on 12/12/2007, -0/+6Either gmail is doing a good job of keeping me spam-free, or I'm not sharing my email address like a hooker.
- ladalang, on 12/12/2007, -0/+5Here's what I don't get, Most people don't read it and create rules to dump it in delete folder so why do they bother? It seems like a huge waste of time and resources. I never understood why anyone would use a marketing system that everyone hates and everyone disposes of and doesn't bother reading. That mean 95% of all spammers are idiots.
- TheRealAlzabo, on 12/12/2007, -0/+595% of spammer's *Clients* are idiots.
And should be beaten with tire rods till they stop this *****...... - Waterrat, on 12/12/2007, -0/+5 Yeah there sure was...
- Waterrat, on 12/12/2007, -0/+5 As do I...I get sick of all those glossy ads for useless stuff i don't want/need/care about.
- ubergeek09, on 12/12/2007, -0/+5His power is maximum!
- MindTrigger, on 12/12/2007, -0/+5Yeah, one of my clients has about 50 people on their network. Their antivirus/antispam package is blocking 55,000 spams per month on the exchange server. Their firewall also uses spam blacklists. People in there are still getting between 2-20 spams per day depending on how much they have used their company email address to sign up for ***** online. During xmas season it gets up to 65,000+ per month. Remember, that's for 50 people. lol.
- thejohnfloyd, on 12/12/2007, -0/+5You can reply as your others also!
- tempusrob, on 12/13/2007, -0/+4No you can't.
- zspeed78, on 12/12/2007, -0/+4I got pissed when I had a POBox and asked them to not deliver stuff that wasnt addressed directly to me. They wouldnt do it. Someone paid, it must be delivered I suppose.
- frostw, on 12/13/2007, -1/+5I'm getting a ***** load for replica watches.
- inactive, on 12/12/2007, -0/+4The last thing in this article you should be complaining about is graphic design. Happy? http://i17.tinypic.com/71d1205.png
- Adenosine, on 12/12/2007, -0/+4A line graph or a scatter plot would not be appropriate in these situations. Line graph's should only be used in continuous situations, so it would make sense for the "% of spam per year" graph but 4 points on a line graph is better represented by bars. An scatter plot should only be used to show a correlation between two variables. My problem with these graphs is the lack of labeling on the axes
- AxeSwinger, on 12/12/2007, -0/+4I know this to be true but I think the figure is low. 98% of the stuff my boss and coworkers send me is useless and I can just put in the trash...
- londubh, on 12/12/2007, -0/+4We need to stop spam at its source and keep it from being relayed. Just filtering it at the receiving end doesn't address bandwidth issues caused by spam.
- frostw, on 12/13/2007, -0/+4Personally, I'd rather the occasional spam slipping through the filter than completely missing potentially important emails from someone I forgot to whitelist.
