- MikeOSX, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14Wouldnt they have brought it to Alienware?
- HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Actually, Toshiba makes very few components in current iPods. They used to make all the hard drives. Sharp makes some number of displays.
TI only makes one chip in iPods now, and it's very minor.
Apple was very original here. Yes, all the parts existed before the iPod was made. No, no one put them together. Was Henry Ford not original because he didn't invent steel, only made cars from it? - jeff25624, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It's actually good to get an article without the usual pointless bickering about mp3 players these days, and also gain a good idea of what went into creating one of the most ubiquitous devices out there. Good Article.
- gravis86, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7GREAT article. This is definitely Dugg.
- HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The first mp3 jukebox was made by Compaq, the PJB-100.
Not Creative.
Honestly, even Archos beat Creative to the punch.
Not that any of this matters. Apple made the mp3 market what it is today. Apple sold more mp3 jukeboxes in the 2nd year of the iPods existence than Creative would even have imagined was possible between all manufacturers. - Ninjab3ar, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6maybe the stereotype they have on an alien's appearance offended them.
- cello, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3As everyone else has said about the article .... good read
- ersnyder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3And your vast resources proving it wrong have convinced me. Thanks be to you... {sarcasm}
Idiot. - vr1000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Cool article. Its interesting to read how many different companies were involved plus I am very impressed with the speed with which this product was brought to market.
- allanpat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I agree. I always wondered who came up with the "iPod" name, as it doesn't really describe the device. It's funny that it was just an old registered name for an Apple Internet Kiosk that they never used.
- elentar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They didn't mention one likely source for the interface design...
At the same time that Apple licensed the SoundJam software, they also licensed the Kerbango Tuning Service from Kerbango (later acquired by 3Com) and used it as the basis for the iTunes Radio feature.
Kerbango also was making a desktop radio that would play streaming content from anywhere in the world. It had an LCD display, some buttons and two big knobs on the front, and a hierarchical music tree that you could spin the knob to navigate with, and press the knob to select an item. You can see it still on the 3Com site here:

It's a shame the product wasn't sold for very long!

- krishenn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1DUGG! Great article. Didn't matter whether you are or are not a Mac fan - I thought it was just a very interesting piece.
- Solarux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nooo...Toshiba still makes about 40% of the iPod while Sharp has made pretty much all of the displays since inception. Under the hood, I'm willing to bet the Zune and iPod will be kissing cousins.
- r©ain, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Ohh hell... why not...
"CUPERTINO, California and SINGAPORE – August 23, 2006 – Apple® and Creative Technology, Ltd. today announced a broad settlement ending all legal disputes between the two companies. Apple will pay Creative $100 million for a paid-up license to use Creative's recently awarded patent in all Apple products. Apple can recoup a portion of its payment if Creative is successful in licensing this patent to others."
Thus my original post.
The Apple/Creative Settlement and the two timing cheating payout licensola crap I was making funny about.
But I was wrong to make funny.
I am funny in bars and meet lots of people in real life because I don't get trivial.
But here on Digg I do.
But that's my fault for not realizing the 5 second life-cycle of memory here.
I am a technologist and report to several boards.
That's different than most, granted. I report to boards because I see deep into trends.
That's what I do.
So my bad for not seeing Digg as not being as deep in tech depth as /. and others.
Alienware could have indeed had a chance at a handheld media player interface per the very factual and informative post made above,
If only it had been.
But because of the Zune arrangement, Apple gets some money back on that $100 million settlement poer the terms of said agreement.
Think about it. - r©ain, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Yeah, my sense of humor is indeed odd.
Because my humor hinges on insight and relevence.
http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2006/aug/23settlement.html
I was making a reference to the Creative/Apple settlement.
Of course, that took an ounce of thought.
Anyway.. forget all that.
ALIENWARE!
you know, I just call it as I see it.
And you know what?
The fact that you fail to see the irony in the fact that your comments are actually a recursive loop is utter hilarity. But that too takes thought, so I wont explain it.
But it's hella funny. - Ninjab3ar, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1""Digging you down for being a condescending turdbag with an odd sense of humor."
Ditto."
Ditto. - Virgule, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0"One of these myths is that the iPod has a father -- one man who conceived and nurtured the iconic device."
The iPod *have* a father and I know who it is.. The guy is feeling very challenged about unveiling the truth in all the glorious details. He is considering a phone call to Steve everyday and he almost got there (line on hold with the music and all that..) but hanged up on a sudden hand-shaking, heart-beating and sweat-pouring emotionnal attack. It is big stuff to him!! He know it is a rather weak behaviour, which is explanable by a social traumatism from back when still a yough man, but the fact he kindly gave this to them mean to him they should get to him.. He blindly hope Apple (Steve) will take his hand and..
I carefully filter my words here better not light a blaze of reactions and storm of interpretations....
I want your input, Diggers. Please help me help him as he is in fear. - r©ain, on 10/12/2007, -20/+16Well say what you will, but I *know* the Zune is the iPods little bastard brother.
You can tell because it has it's good-time Charlie of a daddies track pad. Yeah, that's some genes staring back at you right there.
Man... and with Creative coming in trying to claim paternity rights, I have to say that's the first time I've seen a two timing no good dead beat dad get paid by the mom while shes rearing the kid.
What a mess. So you know, talking about the "birth" of the iPod isn't exactly a pretty story. Unless you're into Soap Operas. :P - mississippiman, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2i did not know that
- HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Well, the articles are getting closer to the truth. But I recognized two different portions cribbed directly from the Wikipedia article. Both parts are, by the way, untrue.
I'm not sure why Apple doesn't just release the actual story. - encognito, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2"Digging you down for being a condescending turdbag with an odd sense of humor."
Ditto. - goffy59, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Creative made the Ipod, why does apple get credit for ***** they didn't even create..... Unix?, the first apple OS, the only reason they are alive (Microsoft).
- Solarux, on 10/12/2007, -9/+0A good foot up the ass for the fanboys who modded me down in previous comments for pointing out who actually makes the iPod components (Toshiba, Sharp and Ti). From the article, there are two things you can now shut the ***** up about and please refrain from mumbling:
1. Microsoft steals everyone else's ideas, Apple is 100% original
2. Zune sucks because it's made by Toshiba
Suck it, suck it hard and swallow.
Oh, and yea...good article. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1Apple is 100% Original? I think there are some Sun Employees that would disagree with you. There are also some Xerox employess that would disagree with you. You are nothing but a *****-Smoking Ignorant Fanboy with a Small Brain and an even Smaller Penis.
/rant - r©ain, on 10/12/2007, -21/+8The fact that the above post was so quick to get modded down really shows how there is no tolerance for creative expression or insight on Digg.
Was what I said a troll?
Was it inaccurate?
Was it offtopic?
Was it a flame?
No.
It merely wasn't a pedestrian comment.
A post saying "Wouldnt they have brought it to Alienware?" -- a completely inane statement with no merit or relevance or even humor gets modded up.
It truly seems that the crowd here is a bunch of plebians.
Well, ***** it, not that it matters. I'll still post and not lower the mentallity of my posts.
I just find it ironic that a site whose readers regard themselves as so superior to slashdot are so closed minded, pedestrian and expressedly dull wiitted.
So while you hit that thumbs down, because I don't say something you would have said and because I think differently than you, just remember... My middle finger is always up in the air for dumb ***** like you. - xxrazor, on 10/12/2007, -20/+3or maybe aliens brought the ipod+itunes to steve jobs and told him to dominate the earthling music market

What is Digg?
