- awm4, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20I think that the PS3 will be more like a foul ball.

Do you mean a grand slam with 3 men on base?
How do you screw up a baseball metaphor? - greatblackowl, on 10/12/2007, -11/+21This whole downfall of sony is sad. I have a sony shelf stereo system that absolutely rocks (and is several years old), I have a PS2 that is still kicking strong after 6 years (I got it the day it came out), but every pair of sony headphones I purchased within the last year have been godawful, and I just got the replacement for my Thinkpad battery that was recalled. Sony really does need a success.
"But coolness can be fleeting, as Sony has learned the hard way. Once, the company's name was synonymous with cutting-edge consumer electronics products. But Sony's image has taken a beating in recent years - along with its stock price."
Very true. - blaket, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I agree. Sony has had a solid place in my house over the years, but lately I've been shying away from them due to the issues that they have had. I wouldn't say it's sad, as you did, but more that it's deserved. They have allowed themselves to fail over and over again in the past couple of years, so they earned the reputation that they have now.
- bombadier337, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I just wish Sony didn't secure everything like they do. For example, if they had made writeable UMD's so you could burn your purchased video and audio files, that format would probably be doing better than it is now. And they didn't stop piracy by not doing this, just as many people pirate games by using memory sticks. It would have made the PSP a much more successful media device IMHO
- mandarin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Their new ad is creepy.
- CrimsonBlur, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Why is this comment being modded down? WTF? He's exactly right. Sony is having issues right now and it's obvious. They are getting bad press left and right and very little good press. The only products they are putting out right now that are of any quality are their Pro products and very high end consumer stuff. Everything else is so forgettably crap that, basically, no one is talking about it or buying it. The only time anything comes up about it lately is because something is either defective or broken.
It's sad because they were once a great company. They were once known for their quality products at reasonable prices. They aren't known for either of those now.
Compair this to a company like Apple, who does get some bad press here and there about scratches on iPods, etc., but as a whole they are getting positive press, positive buzz from consumers and profits are way, way up for them. - raindogmx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8"If it was all about price, then we'd all be driving Hyundais and we'd all be watching $199 TVs,"
I watch a $199 *SONY* tv.
...and i don't feel like connecting a ps3 to it anymore. boo sony! - ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7@ exobyte
A Grand Slam by Sony is already impossible
A Grand Slam with 2 men on, is not a Grand Slam, just 2 RBI + home run. In baseball it is still physically possible... just your terminology is wrong.
Way to try to cover up your stupidity by saying it was a joke. Well, we didn't laugh the first time. - Stonedonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"Isn't this what everyone was saying about Nintendo a few years ago?"
Nah, their handheld division has always been a juggernaut. It's supported them quite well through their lean console years. - cbiz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4These Ad guys are blowing themselves about what a great job they did selling PS2? Hate to be rude, but, ***** them PS2 did not need much help! If PS3 rocks the house it will not be because of these suits with a big TV ad budget. No digg.
- AssProphet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Heh... I first read the title as Sony needs to *Run Home* with the PS3.
To be honest, I like my reading better. - Evari, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3totally agree. I bought a ps2 for san andreas not because of some stupid ad
- WhereAmI, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2my PSP headphones are doing great, they have even been through the wash(just the headphones, not the PSP.)
- anagoge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I mean this in all serious and not in a sarcastic/cocky way at all, but what exactly does Sony/PS3 have going for it currently? Seriously, I'd like to know what you think.
Price - Everyone agrees it's steep
Release - Set back in Europe
Availability - Shortage of units
Slogan - "This is living" ('nuff said)
Advertising - "Play B3yond" advert (scary)
So, from a purely PR point of view, what would still make me buy a PS3 at this point over a 360 or Wii? I'd very much like to know. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7They need a home run, but they'll probably shoot an own-goal instead!
- badtz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3rootkit + exploding batteries
- michaelpe2051, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i loved SONY as a child. my first MW/UKW radio was a SONY and i have always baught their products for their quality but in the last couple of years. i just don't know whats happened to them. i think part of the reason they are failing so bad. is that they don't just focus on hardware anymore. i'll use my minidisc player as an example. great product! taken a drop more than once(i'm a klutz) but SONICSTAGE ,it's music management software, has made this product completly worthless. when the PS3 finally does come out. i hope they have good sales! In my opinion. SONY should go back to selling nothing but hardware. spinoff your their other businesses. with sonys rootkit fiasco last year and the mass recalls of their battery products. if the ps3 doesnt sell. i believe the effect on sony will border on disasterous.
- GatorLCA, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I still think Sony needs to throw all of it's eggs in the "Multiplayer" basket because playing solo has gone by the wayside. If you're a PC gamer (which most console gamers are or have been) then you'll know the best AI is a human itself. Yes AI is getting better but it still sucks and not all your friends have the same system and games are you do.
I'm holding off for a price drop (which will be never) and to see how the success of this so-called "free" online play is. - ratlhead, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I love how in less than a year, all the huge Playstation fanboys that were on here bashing the ***** out of the Xbox 360, have since, changed their minds.
- iluvatar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3and it's not like they weren't making a profit either. Sure, their market share could have been better, but they weren't hurting for cash.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They bunted....and it went foul.
- tmcdigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The big problem with SONY is they got too damn complacent in the marketplace. Did it with PS2, Walkmans, proprietary flops such as the mini-disc, and let's not forget beta-max! They've also RETREATED from some of their former core markets: vcrs, dvd, walkmans (and portable audio including digital audio players!), and most recently LCD/PLASMA TV's!
They also have taken advantage of the consumer by FORCING LIMITED PRODUCTION of products to boost price points, which-- mark my words: WILL COME BACK TO BURN THEM this time-around! For once, I'm willing to bet money that the xbox360 kicks the ps3's ass! (and that's from someone who doesn't care too much that m/s's products these days)
Long gone are the days when SONY was equated with value and quality control and "made in Japan" actually meant something. They've cheapened the brand and quality control by shipping production to china.. and over the years leads to shorter lifespans of products. SONY got suckered into the game of making quick, out the door cheap products and quality suffers... as will be with the PS3 even though the XBOX360 beat them to the punch. Now, Sony will be the laughing stock of the electronics industry when the PS3 flops:
slowly developed, crappy products at a higher than average price... spells doom and gloom for SONY. Hope they have to file bankruptcy before too long!! - sarusa, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3They let the overwhelming success of the PSX (which led to the overwhelming success of the PS2 even though it was the least powerful console of the last gen) go right to their head. I don't know how else you could explain the sort of comments that have been coming out of Sony execs for past year other than as the ravings of power-drunk *****. They desperately need to take a fall here and learn from their mistakes, like Nintendo finally did.
- JimXugle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2So... I'll be getting a PS3 when sony is being liquidated.
- Evari, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2well like it says in the article, it doesn't matter whether u like the ad or hate it, their goal was to get people talking about it... and we are... D'oh!
- hchaudh1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1BTW, found this:
http://ps3.ign.com/articles/614/614682p1.html - wwwdot1jesdotus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@ raindogmx -
I hate to say it dude but Sony doesn't make a $199 TV. - hchaudh1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2- I would say the PS2 and 360 had similar problems with price, supply, overheating etc. when they launched.
- If you like Nintendo games, there is no reason for you to buy a PS3 or a 360.
- The choice of a console depends on the games. If you like PS3 games(exclusives), you will buy a PS3. If you like 360 games, buy a 360.
That being said, the 360 runs on commodity processors. I don't think its in for the long haul. MS will need to upgrade the processors in 2-3 years. I think Sony's processor architecture is more powerful, and more importantly, scalable. If you like high def graphics, I would say go for the PS3 after a year after the initial problems have been sorted out.
I, personally, am holding out for a PS3 for a few reasons:
- I am one of the "anything but Microsoft" crowd
- I will be able to run YellowDog
- I think the PS3 will come with USB ports, so in goes a keyboard, mouse, external HDD etc., install Myth TV and I have a Media center
- Blu-Ray
- - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Not just new formats, but rather new, more expensive, less capable, and generally ***** formats!
- Mithrander, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Isn't this what everyone was saying about Nintendo a few years ago? Now you never hear anything about Nintendo being in trouble because everyone and their mom wants two Wiis.
Maybe there is room in the market for three major consoles. - BamB00, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1A grand slam means bringing the $600 price tag, Blue-ray and Sony as a quality name brand to the home plate. I doubt PS3 will deliver the hit, most likely will be a strike out.
I like competition, but I'm sick of Sony keep bringing new formats to the market, things like M2, BR, UMD, Pro Duo, ATRAC...? - linkboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Did the count have two strikes?
- somnus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Even if they had released a Sony DVD player/UMD writer that writes only Sony Movies to only Sony DVDs, that would be great. You will always have the people who take ti apart or hack it, but at least you got the DVD player and UMD media sale out of them. Hell, charge $50 for each writable UMD. It'd still be great to have the freedom to write movies to it automagically from your DVD player.
- exobyte, on 10/12/2007, -9/+8@awm4: no, didn't screw it up. The joke was that what Sony needs isn't possible.
I'm feeling a digg down here... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Lame topic... I don't buy into the all or nothing argument.
Look, the PS3 has plenty of horsepower for developers to take advantage of. It also has the mindshare of the Japanese-- which translates into titles. Finally, all prices come down, so that problem will fix itself.
I think all in all it will be a good system, and BlueRay will eventually be the main selling point. Since it has longer legs than both the XBox 360 and Wii (i.e. more powerful out of the box), it's shelf life should be significantly longer. Also, once 1080p gaming comes full steam, it should be better positioned to pump out more frames per second than other current systems. - Paramour, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2QUICK! Bash Sony before everyone realizes that the Playstation 3 will be a huge success!!!
- fanboydcs, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3wii for the win
- ZenMojo, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Sony's got more money than most industrial countries. The success of the PS3 will determine the success of the PS3 and the PS3 alone. There seems to be a focus on what Sony's failures are and no one pays attention to their successes. This is interesting because Sony more than most companies takes far more chances. Maybe that's the problem with their public view, they take so many chances that their failures are highlighted, their inexplicable successes are a fluke, and their failures are seen as the end of everything.
- cheato, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0I can't imagine how much the seat would be worth to whoever they hit the home run to...probably as much as $600.
But seriously, I'm sticking to just watching both Sony and Nintendo. Time will tell how things turn out for them. - hchaudh1, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2Duh....
- exobyte, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3Umm, I think I read that on digg.
- Raian, on 10/12/2007, -13/+3A Foul ball the bounces off a pole, and hits Sony in the face-- then while mincing in agony, Sony will somehow also manage to swallow and subsequently choke on the ball-- where it will die in a pool of investors blood and sweat.
- exobyte, on 10/12/2007, -14/+4I just realized this is the first time digg has seen sports metaphors.
- aaron032778, on 10/12/2007, -16/+3Obviously there is a reason people here don't use sports metaphors. A grand slam automatically means that there are 3 people on base.
- exobyte, on 10/12/2007, -21/+4More like Sony needs a grand slam with 2 men on base and PS3 up at bat.

What is Digg?
