- dtele, on 05/26/2008, -2/+12I think benefits/wins from sites like digg, reddit, fark etc. have actually been over-estimated.
Looking at figures/stats it's the same regular users who visit these social media sites, but there are still far more unique visitors who don't.
More concerning is the recent 'negative hype' concerning social media being controlled by a core group of submitters, and many people are now becoming aware that social media is just another form of media marketing. - Tartled, on 05/26/2008, -0/+7This article is about TRADITIONAL social networks, not Facebook and MySpace - you know, friends and relatives.
- chompysweat, on 05/26/2008, -2/+7Nepotism rules the world? Oh, yeah. Old news.
- dstz, on 05/26/2008, -0/+3If some people were willing to read the article, use the tittle, it is actually an hyper-link. Incredible, I know. Additional tip: don't stop at the first lines of the article.
- complicity, on 05/26/2008, -0/+3Uhuhuh, no one actually bothered to read the article...
- inactive, on 05/26/2008, -2/+4I think we should all eat less and then we need to start smoking. You in guys?
- Abomonog, on 05/26/2008, -0/+2I noticed that phenomenon here. There are a core group users here that can and will steal other peoples story and get their repost on the front page. They and their group will then proceed to bury any dissenters. Sad that such ***** can't be banned for such behavior.
However, social media has become a very effective political device. Effective enough that places like digg will most likely find themselves shut down quick if ever laws are passed restricting freedom on the web and eliminating net neutrality. - bowe, on 05/26/2008, -0/+2Hey everyone on digg, I just dyed my hair black and cut it so that it's sideways and covers up one of my eyes...kinda like a pirate. Just thought I'd let you know in case you want to try it out for yourselves.
- Chiphort, on 06/06/2008, -0/+1this video shows what people really think about having social networks

- blackturtleus, on 05/26/2008, -0/+1My guess is that the effects of video chat sites could be much greater than text chat sites. Not only are you able to engage in behavior that is highly similar to face-to-face behavior, but you can also see what the other person is doing and what they look like. Norms are often expressed non-verbally and so video oriented sites may be fairly powerful conduits for the spreading of social influence. Maybe people will be exercising together over the internet pretty soon! I'm sure some people already do!
- macewan, on 05/27/2008, -0/+1Some of these comments represent the "no influence" groups. As far as the article goes - big whoop. They needed a study to realize this? We don't need their acknowledgment.
- LightSpeed4, on 05/26/2008, -0/+1why is this in technology? buried.
- madwaxer, on 05/27/2008, -0/+1that doesn't even scratch the surface. even the MSMs are at the mercy of bloggers.
how often have they given a review on a film you've gone out to see. after which you swear you'd never go see it again based on their advice. only to realise it made record 'sales'. i would call those thefts. i saw cloverfeild and i want my money back. it was unbelievable crappy. even the featire length movie that was posted on Youtube was much better and original. cloverfeild had all the cliches of any other Alien monster movie.
-it attacks NY
-brings down skyscrapers sep eleven style
-the city gets wiped out with a big boy nukewhen all else fails
As far as bloggers go in the future they will be twittering during awful movies about how bad they are saving consumers the hassle of leaving their comfortable homes to do that. - chemdiva, on 05/26/2008, -0/+1Seriously? this is new how? Oh wait, they replaced "peer pressure" with "social network" - now i see.
- complicity, on 05/26/2008, -0/+0Peer pressure essentially, kinda disturbing though
- inactive, on 12/24/2008, -0/+0Marble mouth is a best entertaining site .Here share with more fun, finding friend, video, game and many more.
http://marblemouth.com/ - mastication, on 05/26/2008, -1/+1So ... who wants to gather an army?
- flubba, on 05/26/2008, -3/+3i think they mean OVERestimated...
- rosspok1, on 05/26/2008, -0/+0It seems that Tartled and I are the only ones who actually read the first paragraph carefully. The article acknowledges the power of social networks on websites, and then goes on to re-examine the effects of traditional, physical social networks ie people you hang out with, which is what the rest of the article is about.
I still think the article is stating the obvious for the most part, though the implications it mentions are interesting. - kc23266, on 05/26/2008, -2/+2Hey, where's the poke button for this article?
- botbotbot, on 05/26/2008, -3/+2i think this is another piece of research from the department of the bleedin' obvious
if you sit on a social netowrking site all day every day, its pretty obvious you're gonna gain some weight when you're not doing any exercise.
and i don't know about the rest of the world, but on sites like facebook and myspace, im only friends with people who are actually my friends. so if everybody decided to quit smoking at the same time, why would anyone want to be the one standing outside on their own still smoking?
this article more highlights people's conformity to social stances, rather than the influences of social networking sites. - diggerphelps, on 05/26/2008, -2/+1***** THING SUCKS!
- inactive, on 05/26/2008, -2/+1Go to hell CENTCOM *****.

What is Digg?
