- damonic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9When I was a lad, we had this thing called the Playground. Kids used to go and socialize TOGETHER! Good lord! What a concept! I wonder if I can patent it...
- carandol, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4When I were a lad, we had this thing called Usenet, where I met lots of interesting people all over the world and talked to them about all sorts of interesting things. Tell that to the young 'uns today, and they don't believe a word of it.
- flash200, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Nice article. Odd that a decent article about social networking, posted on one of the main social-networking websites (and itself mentioned in the article) wouldn't get much love on Digg.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to spend the rest of the day digging videos of people getting injured at home. Ooohh... that was a good one... he fell down! ;) - rocketdonkie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The author doesn't understand what a social network is. A social network is a network of connections between people. I am connected to Bob who is connected to Sally who is connected to Jim who is connected back to me. Bob, Sally, Jim and I all have connections to people that we know, and there is some overlap. Craig's list and Ebay are not social networks, they are communities with user-generated content. There is a difference in how people interact and how communities and how social networks grow and prosper. They are different entities altogether.
- GameNasty, on 03/24/2008, -0/+1http://www.zooped.com social network
- lukehh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2man, look at what they say Digg used to be....
- desirea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'd have to disagree with the idea that the social network idea started with Craig's list. It started where the internet allowed communication... look back to the IRC networks and Usenet to find the roots of online social networking.
- Four20, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2in essence wouldn't a 'forum' be a social network. lol
if so, then you would be right about decades ago, with dialup BBS. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Now if only craig would update his site to make it easier to use like social networking sites.
Craigslist is annoying stupid to navigate and lets not forget the scammers that can get away with pretty much anything there. - dailyearning, on 09/05/2009, -0/+1nice article

Providing opportunities for child predators to get what they really want, everyday - raada, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm waiting until the anti-social networks comes out. Networks for people who don't want to meet others.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The author needs to do some homework.
He needs to know about:
1- WEB 2.0
2- Social Network
3- Community
1- Web 2.0. Web where the users may contribute the most data for the content of the site. Web 2.0 sites are not Social Network. But Social Network is part of Web 2.0. Example of Web2.0 -> digg.com, craiglist, Wikipedia (it's not a social network). http://www.givemebeats.com/
2- Social Network, is a community of Web 2.0 where users contribute data, interact with each other by being friends, they are connected with each other. Example: myspace.com, youtube.com.
3- Community. The users have less power, and they only contribute in only few area of the site such as forums. But most contents are being added by the admin. Example: ebay.com (not fully community, they are shifting), amazon.
He mentionned Skype, Bittorent, and P2P programs, these are programs that let you do something (talk, download music :) ), but they are not social network. You barely know who is using it at the same time. You don't even make friends, since you can't know them. You don't contribute.
In conclusion, this article is whack. He just wanted to write something about Social Network, but failed to know what it is. - m3mn0n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can't believe he didn't mention http://www.wgamezone.com
- halavais, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2"It began with Craig's List, not long after the Internet itself became a phenomenon." Well, "social networking systems" may have begun then (though I seriously doubt it!). Social Networks, and Social Network Analysis has a history that runs--at a minimum--many decades longer.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2calling craigslist a social network is kinda like calling /b/ a social network
when everyone is anonymous, how can you be social? - Arifur1, on 09/10/2009, -0/+0hi friend ! how are you?
enjoy my new cartoon
here http://www.cartoonstudio.tk/ - misamiyo, on 06/13/2008, -0/+0it is somehow good to have social network, we meet the long lost friends, and meet new.
- arulprakashar, on 02/13/2009, -0/+0Niche social networks like http://indianbee.com are here to stay, If you want a website a social network which is the indian version of Facebook...and helps you learn something rather than spend most of your time wasting by sending useless application requests then head over to an exclusively Indian social network for learning
http://forums.indianbee.com - BlogCruiser, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2The person writing the article needed to do some homework before spouting so-called information about social networking etc. A lot of the material in the article was like stating Gore invented the internet.
- milomilomilo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1gore pressed for legislation that allowed the internet to become what it is.
So if you really want to pick nits..... - thepisstaker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Social networks are set up by business folk who have a brilliant ability to organise and hype and generate millions off of other people's backs.
Of course, as an original-thinking content creator with nothing to show for my hand-crafted contributions to Digg, I state this truism out of jealousy.!!!! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Skype isn't a SNS... The author of the article made a mistake.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Look at the bright side: At least I'm not gay!

What is Digg?
