- NiLeS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Just FYI:
Ver. 1.2.0.18 for all sorts of distros (released in Oct 05)
http://skype.com/products/skype/linux/ - elitheeli, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2What percent of people who actually talk to other people use Linux as their primary operating system? There's no incentive for Skype to release another Linux release. They'll get another hundred thousand downloads or so, but honestly I don't think it is worth their time or effort.

I thought the Linux crowd would make their own? And better? - dragonflight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Used to use Skype...no complaints with the quality (of service) but its just not convenient unless all your frequent contacts use it reliably.
Can't knock the price though: free. Great uses for overseas calling, even if they use skypeout to call a US number its half the price of a India-America landline connection with the cheapest carrier. - havaloc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Don't forget about standards based Gizmo Project.
- LouisC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd use Gizmo but the bastards decided to provide packages instead of a tarball or something people with non-rpm and non-debian distros could use.
Either that or make ebuilds for gentoo (AMD64 too) :-) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like Google Talk.

Too Funny - pcgeek101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Skype is awesome ... I bought a bluetooth usb adapter and headset to work with it. I *never* touch my house phone.
- skyshark88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I use Ubuntu and I have skype......
- DewayneSmith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, Skype did a total resource rape of my computer... *uninstalls Skype*

You know, I'd completely forgotten that Skype annoyance too, since I've been using my i386 laptop, instead of my AMD64 desktop, a lot recently... The complete lack there too of support for arches other than i386 for Linux. Especially as I find any new systems I look at are decidedly not running Intel, and I want to take full advantage of the fact that the CPU's 64-bit... I hadn't looked enough at Gizmo to even notice, as the last I looked, the linux package was still being developed. - robinstar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've started using Skype quite a lot now, calling friends across the world. I find the quality far superior to yahoo or gtalk. I'm hooked!
- pcgeek101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0With the release of Skype 2.0, it'll certainly rack up their download numbers ... people will catch on quickly to video conferencing for free, from a service that rivals Yahoo and MSN's (terrible).
- raster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'll take another look at Skype when it becomes non-proprietary and uses standards, and allows for third party clients...
- NiLeS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"when was the last Lin* release? Oct. '72"
Skype has been around that long?!? - ipstacks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I use Ubuntu and Skype is nice since Google Talk doesn't have a client for Linux. The interface of the Linux Skype client could be a lot better. Some of the "forms" or fields in the windows won't resize, but the window itself will. The worst part of that is I can't make the window big enough to see all of its content . . . like the ok button to save any changes on the given page. Anyway it works, but I had higher expectations than this. The other thing is it takes a good 45 seconds to load with no indication it is doing anything. I am thinking that could be something I did though.
- aforonda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Gizmo is better, free voicemail plus more none of this dinging you for little crap.

Lol, i love you. Best comment, ever. - LexisNexis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Horrible tagline
- diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I absolutely hate the new sounds they added in Skype 2.0

hehe - 1ivewire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would really like to see some real video conferencing instead of just one-to-one video calling.
- jimbo92107, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just had a 3-way teleconference with one guy on a Mac, one on a Linux box, and me using XP. Skype can work on all platforms, if you know what you're doing.

Stonekeeper, if you read up on Skype before using it, you will in fact see that this is how Skype works ... and they do disclose this, just not in a super obvious way (poor wording in their disclosure). And please, check out WikiPedia's profile on Skype. There is tons more there including many referenced articles about bandwidth issues etc... - buck09, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just started using Skype for in-company video conferencing. It's pretty damn cool. I also liked the fact that they have documentation specifically for network admins.
- ncraig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Gizmo all the way
- kwick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sorry Dan.
http://www.digg.com/technology/Using_Skype_Be_Afraid_ - nazzdeq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0On OS X I got a bunch of echo and noise using Skype. I'll just stick to iChat.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The latest is that Skype may be blocked by ISPs if hackers start to use it to launch denial of service attacks - according to Cambridge professor Jon Crowcroft at least

when was the last Lin* release? Oct. '72 - emag, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I agree an updated Linux client sure would be nice. I've had to downgrade just to keep sound quality at barely-acceptable levels, and keep it working really at all. And this annoys me greatly because I've not only purchased a slew of SkypeOut minutes, but also have a SkypeIn number, with the idea of being able to get calls anywhere I have a network connection, as well as the claimed encryption.
At the time I started using Skype, it looked like their priorities were, in order, Windows, Linux, and MacOSX. Since that time, both the Windows and MacOSX clients have progressed in leaps and bounds, while the Linux client has languished, with not even long-standing issues even addressed (sound, the OSS system, the idiotic already-fixed-by-users .deb dependencies, etc).
Every time a new release comes out with no updates for Linux, I get that much closer to asking for my money back, as their continued actions are continually demonstrating to me that, despite my financially supporting them, they apparently have no interest in supporting me, and so I'll have very few qualms about moving to a product such as Gizmo that does want to do something to earn my money. - pcgeek101, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0^^^ chouch, lol ... despite the flame, you're right.
- simX, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0It's "Mac OS X", not "MacOSX".
