- scarpaman, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17NetGear released this product nearly a month ago at Amazon.com for $50 bucks less http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000F76W78/ref=sr_11_1/104-9194611-3120763?%5Fencoding=UTF8 Price is $249.00 plus Free Shipping. No delivery until July.nn
- atdigg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Not really useful now, it's worthy only in cities that have good public (free) WiFi coverage. It will be an big thing in couple of years. Mobile operators be afraid, really afraid!
- matrox212, on 10/12/2007, -8/+19You can buy a pocket pc with a wi-fi card, put skype on there and do a lot more with it than you could with that phone for the same price.
- mstar, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13Not quite...
"This item will be released on June 30, 2006" - Amazon site - canyonblue, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9"Not quite...
"This item will be released on June 30, 2006" - Amazon site"
Not quite...
which means even with 1 day delivery you will get it in July, just like the original poster said. ;-) - mstar, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10It would still be useful when you have Wifi at home...
- foxhoundadmin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6netgear and high-quality in the same sentence? lol!
- JohnboiWaltune, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It needs to have GSM as well, for when WiFi is not available. Then they would have a winner IMO. Skype at home/in the office, GSM when out and about.nnI have a SonyEricsson T630, and it looks extremely similar to the NetGear Skype phone.
- TheFightForGood, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6well although it may be illegal...
i know my town, which is rather small, has pretty good coverage due to no one knowing how to secure their routers. if i had 300$ to throw away I would get one of these cause they look sweet. - febryle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"So long skype keeps their calling any phone from US and Canada for free"
Does anyone really think they're going to continue offering SkypeOut for free? Come on... - snubber, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6just wait till they port skype to the DS :D
- JPhilipson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Dupe, and old news I posted this a loooong time ago.
http://digg.com/hardware/Netgear_Skype_Phone_Available_for_Pre-Order_ - NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I'd use it at home more than anywhere else. Portable telecom is for my cell phone. This could be my home phone replacement.
- ant1532, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3this would be an awesome 50 bucks buy... but 300!?! it will be down next year for sure
- djdole, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The point of this phone is it uses Skype, and so allows calling for pretty much free after the initial phone purchase.
Do the math and compare it to the average low-end cell phone contract.
Cell phone: $30 * 12months = $360 + federal & state fees and taxes every year.
Skype Phone: $300 one time = $300 once.
They aren't claiming that this is a cell phone killer.
If you want wide coverage NOW, get a cheap cell phone.
Even then you may find areas where there is little or no coverage (inside many buildings for example).
Besides, nowadays most BKs have free wifi. Granted Burger King isn't as widespread as McDonalds, but I'd say that free wifi is definitely becoming more prevalent. - ddfall, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I agree that this is cool and all and I will probably buy one but it's old news (at least for me) as it's been on netgears site for months, on skype's site for quite some time, and on engadget and gizmodo.com already. I know that not everyone goes to these sites and a lot of people may have missed it but still. I may get rated down but this should not be front page. Either way, it's still cool to be PC-less and be able to use skype now that it's free.
- tavisjohn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I just use Skype on my Treo600 & LifeDrive! LifeDrive is FULLL WIFI! so all over the house. My Treo600 let's me call canada via Skype for FREE!!!*
*(3rd party app required to do this, Skype does not officially support Palm OS platforms) - fatchuck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Nice product I suppose, but you can buy any PocketPC-compatible PDA with 801.11b/g that will do a lot more than this phone for either the same price or a little bit more. Dell Axims are one example.
- foxhoundadmin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3why did kevin rose digg this!? didn't he get a wifi phone for FREE and then sold it on ebay? lol!
- dan90251, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I've been waiting for this phone since last year... It's gonna be £140 in the UK. I have an Ipaq with Skype already but the whole experience just isn't the same. My mothers getting one and so's my aunt. She didn't understand the ipaq and she couldn't be bothered to wait while the PC started up so this is the perfect inbetween.
- nzl10, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2can you use skype on the Nokia770?
- weiran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It looks like it's based off a Sony Ericsson shell to me.
The white reminds me of the T630... - triikan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Go on ebay and you can get the Dell Axim x51v (the highest end one) for $300 (or at dell's website for like $374). Install skype pocketpc and boom.
- mfalkon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2makes me wish I wasn't in a 2 yr contract with my VOIP provider
- radu79, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Turn "echo cancelation" on.
- avsa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"it's the interface stupid"
of course you can do it now. What matters is: will it be easy? will it be worth the trouble? will it be sexy? Or will it be just a big nerdy phone? - GloriousNight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1duplicate story. +digg anyway =)
- TKDWILSON, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Who would want this for this price? I bet within a year Google will have something that does the same thing through GTalk. I can see them selling a phone too for very cheep that perhaps displays ads or maybe you listen to a 30 second ad before making a call or something?
Eric Wilson - chad78, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3The comment in the headline that says "Totally worth it, so long skype keeps their calling any phone from US and Canada for free." - well, that's just until the end of the year. So, if it's worth $300 to have a cell phone until Christmas, then, it's worth it.
- nexionly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So In cities that are considering installing free wifi access for free, and apparently there are many cities that have looked into this and are considering it, this phone could easily replace cell phones very quickly, world wide wi fi access isn't that far off, and with stuff like this, cell phones are going to change very quickly. Im excited
- shout, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This thing looks sweet. It's about time a really good wifi phone makes it. I know that I'm gonna accidentally leave the house with this badboy instead of my cellphone.
- canyonblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1resonable price for what it is now free calling.
- dusting, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No browser built-in so if your thinking of using it in a hotel while traveling you are out of luck.
- llbbl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hey I was just looking at this on their website yesturday. :) I should have submited it digg.
- ChileanGoD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1YES. I tried it with family from Chile and they could not called me. :( It tells them to pay for SkypeOut time.
- XStatic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The downside is Skype doesn't use SIP so you are stuck with Skype only...
- spacebar14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Does skype really track that whether you are calling from US or Canada?"
Is the sky really blue?
Of course they do.... otherwise people would be calling from all over the world and costing them way more money. - modifiedbears, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0looks like someone got their wired too
- geekee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"Totally worth it, so long skype keeps their calling any phone from US and Canada for free."
RTFA:
"NETGEAR's WiFi Phone for Skype (SPH101) is the world's first wireless Internet phone that can make free calls to other Skype users anywhere in the world, anytime you have WiFi access, without a PC... You can even make calls to ordinary phones using Skype-Out for just pennies a minute and no monthly fees." - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2looks like the "Apple iPhone"
- ivachen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I read else where that this thing doesn't work on encrypted network, totally kills the deal, no digg.
- fatchuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I have a question, may be off topic. Does skype really track that whether you are calling from US or Canada?"
To answer your question, probably, but I do know the NSA does, so I'd suggest calling their customer support line at 1-800-SPYSRUS for more information. ;-) - Wahttehhog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"The only condition is that we have said free SkypeOut within the US and Canada is guaranteed to last until the end of this year — that is, until December 31, 2006. We’re not quite sure yet what we will do after that. Maybe we extend the free period, maybe not. You’ll hear more about this towards the end of the year. Until then, happy calling."
- G0dzzilla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0With Broadvoice you will have a WiFi phone for $99.95
http://www.broadvoice.com/wifi_voip_phone.html - hazard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Though you could technically replace your cell phone one day with something like this, its really a step up from your cell phone. If you dont have family or friends in other countries then it's not as great but to be able to speak to relatives via Skype any (Wifi enabled) area you go, for FREE, is amazing, and $300 isnt bad considering how many other Skype phones there are out there. Locally, the more free wifi and the more people that jump on this the better it gets. Not bad when you consider NOT having a cell phone bill to pay anymore.
- leoclark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hi everyone,
i really believe this is good but i am going for the dell axim X51v and skype.
i live in brazil and cell phone company charges more than international call costs for local mobile calls.
it is absurd.
i even started using voipdiscount.com because it was free, but it is not as good as skype and not free anymore.
one good thing i believe is the fon.com revolution. share your wifi network and roam the world for free.
i read that both skype and google put money in it.
anyway, i am really interested in all this. the voip / wifi combo to end cell phones fast.
all the best,
leo - Adrnshw6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This seems pretty cool, but I don't think it will catch on yet. Maybe it will catch on in cities, but even in large towns and very small cities wifi is not always available.
- gatorrock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I really think people are thinking too small here... what makes this phone (or any wifi phone that can use Skype) so great is if you have family/friends overseas.
If you read through Skype they have the great system of SkypeIn (http://www.skype.com/products/skypein/). Meaning you can buy a phone number in any other country they offer and a normal phone call can then be directed to your new Skype phone which is always on whether you are at your computer or not. Meaning anyone can get a hold of you when they want!
That's why this is so great, not the free out going calls, but the "free for friends" incoming calls. You pay under $40 a year and they can reach you when ever they feel like...
Basically my best friend is moving to Ireland in September for 2 years. Her family and her husband's family are wanting a cheap way to talk to them. $40 a year for a number in the US that will reach them for unlimited free calling in Ireland? Yeah I'd say this is great.
And as a side to JPhilipson... if you added "Wifi" to your title people might have thought more about your version of this, it's all about how you sell your story! - glintingember, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For $400 I bought a Verizon XV6700 that has built in wifi 802.11b and the ability to use 128 bit WEP. It works great with skype over my home wifi network or any given hotspot... for $100 more I have a smart phone that can do a ton more things. :o)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've been doing this for almost a year with my Ipaq and Skype. Very cool its free now.
I use www.ORb.com to stream my cable TV, movies, and music to my Ipaq too -
