- plasticmind, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9I think perhaps the most interesting discussion will be focused on the practical consequences of this type of technology. It's true, all of your data is out there, floating around, decentralized; being able to bring it all together in one machine-readable format is not only powerful, it's a little frightening. I think it's a wise move for Six Apart to make this open. Better to get it out and make everyone aware of it than to keep it bottled up and maintain a facade of privacy.
- leesherman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7the biggest challenge to the opening up of the social graph will be social networks like Facebook who have a vested interested in keeping the data locked down. Today, you can export portions of the newsfeed as RSS but the majority of the data (everything you actually do on Facebook) is locked behind the walled garden.
- anildash, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Sorry to hear you're upset about the stats tracking on LJ. Just so you know, the stats app we're using is Omniture, which is just like Google Analytics or Hitbox, which millions of sites use. It's tracking information like your browser size and screen resolution, and unlike nearly every other site which uses these tools, we let you opt out. And we announced both the stats system and how to opt out on the community dedicated to announcing our business decisions. While I am sympathetic to the concerns you have here, I'm pretty confident we're head and shoulders above *any* community in terms of disclosure and user control here, and I'd love feedback if you've found a community that's doing more to inform users about these issues, so that we can do even better.
- plasticmind, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yeah, but instead of putting your head in the sand, Six Apart is trying to raise awareness and let people take control of it. It's not like they're creating this information, they're just creating ways of letting you monitor and manage it.
- smacksaw, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4I'm suspicious. I don't trust LJ/6A at all. They're going to be putting tracking cookies on LJ users to know where you go outside of LJ. That is spooky. And to opt-out, it's buried deep in an obscure announcement:

Forgive me if I don't think there's some sort of benevolent reason here for opening this up. - jessechan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1What happens if a social graph is compromised? http://fishtrain.com/2007/09/28/what-happens-when- ...
- vault, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1what do you mean?
- darthdusty, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1hey coffee why don't you stop spamming before we give your ass a virus you'll never forget
- b_flats, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2I for one welcome our new overlords at 6A. ;-)
I've opted out on LJ. - kushiel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Christ, I'm sick and tired of people not knowing what the hell web stats are. LJ isn't tracking your Herry/Draco smut habit, they just want to know if, say, the Support link is in a prominent enough place (can people find it?), and if enough people are using a screen res high enough to support higher res layouts.
I can understand this from non-techie people on LJ, but on Digg? Feh. - mhmdkhamis, on 12/18/2007, -0/+0http://games.free-software.cc/
