- rgsteele, on 12/01/2008, -0/+153That I found out about this through a Twitter post says it all, really. Even with the file sharing features, they just never reached the critical mass necessary to make using it worthwhile.
- thorpus, on 12/01/2008, -0/+76So was this an acquisition or was Pownce just handed over? The blog post isn't clear.
- benologist, on 12/01/2008, -3/+65Six Apart were probably paid to take it.
- arielwaldman, on 12/01/2008, -3/+52For pro users, we'll be sending you an email shortly with instructions. Also, if you have additional questions or want to discuss this further, post on http://getsatisfaction.com/pownce !
- revrev, on 12/01/2008, -4/+47Goodbye Pownce. I barely knew thee. Thanks to all the devs and Ariel for everything.
- circa1978, on 12/01/2008, -1/+37Ha! Keep the servers up ... that is funny.
- laaabaseball, on 12/01/2008, -2/+37Ack! There's a Bug in our Codes! http://www.flickr.com/photos/laaabaseball/30748033 ...
- Scrappy1850, on 12/01/2008, -2/+35collectible dish rag!
- joshHighland, on 12/01/2008, -2/+35I guess my pownce shirt is a collectors item now
- kraftj, on 12/01/2008, -1/+32How can Pownce shut down before Twitter? I thought Pownce actually made money?
- TheRealPilchard, on 12/01/2008, -2/+32OK. For pro users (me), is it good news or bad news?
- BoneStamp, on 12/01/2008, -1/+29Kevin, hope you made some money on this deal bro.
- poorbusker, on 12/01/2008, -2/+27NO...NOT POWNCE
- inactive, on 12/01/2008, -4/+27I joined Pownce because I think Leah is cute, not because it has any practical use. Kind of like how Twitter doesn't have any practical use either.
- seandfeeney, on 12/01/2008, -2/+24I liked Pownce but, I kinda saw this coming. It just seemed like it wasn't catching on. Too bad because it was far more powerful than twitter. Keep up the good work and good luck on all your future endeavors Pownce Team!
- dfsjdkflasjk, on 12/01/2008, -2/+24What made anyone think they could take on Twitter?
- debaser19, on 12/02/2008, -0/+21inside sources say it was for 50 bucks and a smack on the ass...
sweet deal. - arielwaldman, on 12/01/2008, -1/+22We're also offering a refund as an option. You should receive an email shortly with instructions.
- sockpuppets, on 12/02/2008, -0/+20Thanks to Verdana and Helvetica, too!
- Barackalypse, on 12/01/2008, -10/+29Those of you who paid the $20 for a year of Pownce Pro should email and ask for a pro-rated refund, the service you paid for is being terminated in 2 weeks and they're giving you something different. If asking nicely doesn't get you a refund, inform them you will be contacting your credit company and asking for a chargeback, if that doesn't work then call your credit card company and actually file a charge back. If the credit card company cannot help because you are outside the charge back window, complain to http://www.consumerist.com and hope they publish the story and the negative press forces Six Apart to refund your money, and failing that file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and write your State attorney general.
- afidler, on 12/01/2008, -0/+16Same here. I liked the Pownce model, even if it was essentially the same thing as Twitter. It's still sad to see internet start-ups fail with so much potential.
- sockpuppets, on 12/02/2008, -0/+14Put it on your Shrine to Kevin Rose.
- crazlunatic, on 12/01/2008, -0/+14how does twitter even manage to stay up without any revenue stream? must cost thousands per month to keep the servers up
- mmalone, on 12/01/2008, -0/+14Not necessary. Pro users will have the option of either getting one year free on typepad (~$150 value) or receiving a pro rata refund. Emails will be sent out shortly with details.
- LumberjackBauer, on 12/01/2008, -5/+19Pownce was over hyped because Leah Culver and Kevin Rose were involved.
The service itself isn't really that great and this isn't all that surprising. - melonhedd, on 12/01/2008, -7/+21WHO_CARES Welcomes WHO_CARES
- benologist, on 12/01/2008, -0/+13The guy who owns twitter is the same guy who sold blogspot to Google.... for an undisclosed but probably ***** huge amount of money.
- BeBigs, on 12/01/2008, -1/+13Well now! That was incredibly convenient!
- shaunhey, on 12/01/2008, -4/+16What is Pownce? What is vox?
Meh. - BoneStamp, on 12/01/2008, -2/+13Wasn't it was his idea?
- inactive, on 12/02/2008, -0/+10The problem is they made it seem like they weren't taking on Twitter. They were trying to be some service exempt from competition when you and I knew their competition was Twitter. If they really tried to innovate and certain management was behind them 100% I think Pownce could have had a fighting chance. It's sad because every time I turned around Kevin was out pimping Twitter instead of Pownce. Pownce has had such a bad reputation that no one wanted to touch it. Their first task should have been to fix that then pushed forward in the field of what they were, a Twitter competitor.
- saskwatch, on 12/01/2008, -3/+13"I liked Pownce for the extra features. It was a great way to send larger files to a group or to an individual. Now, I have to go back to http://drop.io or something. Lastly, I am a paid Pownce member. I feel screwed in the deal because I do not want the free TypePad for a year offer. Why would I replace a microblog (with targeted file sharing) with a full on blog? That does not make sense."
- MattFromSeattle, on 12/01/2008, -0/+9"keep the servers up"
I see what you did there. - PaulMassive, on 12/01/2008, -0/+9As much as i respect the people bind pownce, and their amazing use of technology and design, i think it lacked a certain something to make it special. I think the web 2.0 bubble has burst.
- Sylenus, on 12/01/2008, -1/+10I have mixed feelings about this, I never got to fully use the service but really liked what it was trying to do
- snapplecap, on 12/01/2008, -0/+8It has been 100mb for a few months now.
- Syni, on 12/01/2008, -1/+9I've heard that Pro users are apparently offered a free year of TypePad. Laughable, if anything.
- Barackalypse, on 12/01/2008, -0/+8Every once in a while being a cynic means I am pleasantly surprised, this is one of those moments. Good job Six Apart.
- EnderMB, on 12/01/2008, -9/+17Now who didn't see that coming?
Pownce was a stupid idea and this is the best thing that could've happened to it. I respect those that worked on it, but they'd be liars if they were to admit that Pownce was worthy of mainstream use. - FredFredrickson, on 12/01/2008, -2/+9Pownce is still up?
- melikbilge, on 12/01/2008, -1/+8Pownce was an interesting new service for me. I'm sad to see it go, it had lots of potential.
- EnderMB, on 12/02/2008, -0/+7No wonder Leah left. Some of you guys are ***** freaks.
- BTMainframe, on 12/01/2008, -1/+8Pity - it was the second social networking site I used (after about a year of only Facebook). Pages always loaded too slowly for me though, compared to Twitter, hence my preference to the latter.
- Darkyuubi, on 12/01/2008, -0/+7...yeah? Hello?! Star-up 2.0 101 bud.
- mmx2000, on 12/01/2008, -4/+10Agreed, what the ***** is Pownce? Besides a stupid name for a Product? Get off my frontpage.
- EnderMB, on 12/01/2008, -1/+7Pownce? I'll pay $50 for one!
- juniorlikespie, on 12/01/2008, -0/+5anybody have any suggestions for a similar service?i liked pownce and the idea of being able to easily share files is what really set it apart from twitter at least in my book. it was so easy to share screenshots. music or just about anything i needed with my friends.
- xenlab, on 12/01/2008, -0/+5While it never seemed to catch on, I used my Pro account to send big files to friends. Mostly for being able to bounce pre-mastered wavs of tracks we were working on. I also used it to announce events. Both of these features will be sorely missed.
- jeremy.heslop, on 12/01/2008, -2/+7From article "For the Pownce Pro users, we would like to offer you a free TypePad account for a year." Seems like a lame trade to me since wordpress is free, but at least you get something if you went pro.
- deadbaby, on 12/01/2008, -0/+5The long standing 10mb attachment limit pretty much killed any unique value Pownce might have had. I understand storage/bandwidth is expensive but it was the one feature that made it stand out from the competition and it was crippled from day one.
