XM with 5+ million subscribers. and today they announced a deal with DirectTV to be the 'music' provider for those higher up channels. of the music channels provided, there will be 2 non-music channels. a sports show, and Opie and Anthony.
amount of DirectTV subscribers: about 14 million. - Punisher2K, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You pay for satellite to eliminate commericals and the FCC.
If you don't want to pay then enjoy your 2 songs to 10 commercials ratio and talk shows that can't actually talk because the FCC might shut them down.
Free speach is alive and well on XM Channel 202 - FatDreek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2this info is old. It doesn't even list that XM has MLB in the sports section and they have had it all year. They also now have the NHL instead of Sirius. Someone needs to update their "comparison"
I have XM and love it. - Khillian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this describes the situation exactly

o and a party rock! - jacabo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1xm has newer satellites. better end user hardware. opie and anthony. oh and Ron and Fez. The best radio show ever.
- POMP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Aflat, as of June 30, 2005 Sirius had 1,814,526 subscribers. Here's their press release (it's on page 8): http://www.shareholder.com/Common/Edgar/908937/950117-05-3073/05-00.pdf
There may be newer info, but their site is down. XM announced this week that they have topped 5 million subscribers.

Car reception is OK. My friend who has a portable XM receiver has no problems with reception in buildings...
I do think that the content on Sirius is better. The audio processing on XM is impressive - much more of a stereo surround feeling than Sirius... I may be switching soon. - p3ngu1n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this information has been out of date for a while
- ham_sammich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0man,egress. you are sooo intelligent. i applaud you for your well written and in-depth scrutinization of ***** you have no clue about.oh,by the way,ive heard enough of o&a to know they are ***** and have 0 ability...ive never heard any press release about d & a...im 29.....Stern is #1....i will stick with stern, thank you very much....you are a *****....and i dont like you either!! so go crawl back under your "party rock" with d&a,listen to them talk about hookers(since thats probably the only girls they know)...you could probably learn how to pick up a hooker yourself, and finally get laid, unless you look like your avatar, which you probably do!!anyway, eat ***** and die moron!!
STERN IS THA MAN BITCH,DONT EVER FORGET!!!;[
have a nice day :) - zelig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not in your wildest dreams is the audio on XM or Sirius "CD quality".
- sentai, on 09/06/2008, -0/+0http://www.be5.info Nice work man
- scotthfrey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"If an XM sat goes down, XM can launch the one of the two that are waiting to be launched that day."
baloney. It's just sitting on the launch pad waiting until until it is needed? No way. - schultzy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm a XM sub. Didn't know they had "NBL." They do on the other hand have MLB. Also I believe they dropped Discovery channel 'cause it was a POS.
- Swampthing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have both, and personally I prefer XM RADIO in my town because I kept losing the signal to SIRIUS when I drove underneath a bridge of any sort. XM RADIO never does this. So I ended up sticking with XM. But I've still got the remainder of my SIRIUS subscription onboard and will be joining Howard in January 2006.
Unfortunately The PLAYBOY CHANNEL was removed from XM RADIO about a month ago. It's no longer available.. sorry. - Bullitt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ham sammich, you need to listen to O&A a few more times. They truly are more funny than Stern, he's an old nothing. Fart jokes only go so far, have you heard what's on his channel right now? 24/7 fart noises. Now, why would anybody pay for that? Good question, I sure wouldn't.
To all else, XM has better over all comedy. The classic rock is not the best on XM but with O&A and Ron & Fez on XM cahnnel 202, who cares.
Your mom's box - jwalk81980, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The site needs to be updated. The prices are incorrect and the hardware is outdated.
- notman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How is O&A > Stern a fact? It's an opinion. Just because you group it with other popular opinions doesn't make it fact or any more true even.
The money Sirius offered up for Stern was an excellent investment. Those who don't think so obviously haven't been paying much attention to Sirius' business since it was announced that Stern was moving there. The stock did nothing but increase for monthes. Sales also picked up and their subscription rate has just about tripled. That sounds worth a $500,000 investment. - Timmothy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've had a Sirius subscription for 3 years. The programming is excellent. Also worth mentioning is the Sirius OutQ, XM does not have anything like that.

F Jackie, and F YOU! o_o - joepoid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this website is old and outdated, but still shows some of the differences and similarities between both services
- wirelessguru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've had XM for over 3 years. Since getting an iPod shuffle and iTunes 4.9 started including Podcasts - I haven't listened to my XM Radio except for maybe 30 minutes per month. I think Podcasts are a serious threat to local and satellite radio.
P.S. "Podcasts" is not in the Digg dictionary ?? - MilitantRabbit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is too biased, can i UnDigg?
And Stern is just stripper interviews and fart humor. He's lost his edge, his passion, and his mind. "I INVENTED EVERYTHING!" We get it, you're insane. - blacklab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The most up to date sub numbers of both are as follows:
XM - 5 Million ( Sept 28, 2005 ) - Projected 6+ Million by end of 2005
Sirius - 2.08 Million ( Sept. 15, 2005 ) - Projected 3 million by end of 2005. But if you listen to Howard Stern's lies, Sirius has had 3 million subs months ago.. even the SEC filings by Sirius out the number at 2 million just a few weeks ago. Half a billion dollars for Howard is not a smart move and it will not turn things around like they want. - notman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm actually hoping they'll work out some deal to pick up local radio stations... but my guess is that won't happen. We have a pretty good morning show here that outperforms Howard (and many others that have tried) Them and one other talk show are all I listen to on the radio. After that, I listen to CDs, so I'll stay with my free radio for now.
I do have Sirius stock though. Waiting for the Howard transfer. So far I've more than doubled my money. - Seaton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I use XM and most of the time it sucks ass.
They are not commercial free as advertised.
If I hear one more GO2MYPC.COM commercial, I'm gonna throw the XM receiver out the window.
Listening to XM is like a DJ from hell. They play one or two really great songs to get you going and then one really ***** song that nobody could possibly want to hear.
Case in point- Earlier today I was listening to Top Tracks. I was doing some work outside and cranked the volume because they were cranking out the hits. Pink Floyd, Rush, Bad Company. All of the sudden something weird starts playing. Oh Jesus, it's Meatloaf. Not only Meatloaf, but Meatloaf's longest song. I wanted to vomit. How exactly does that fat talentless bastard qualify as a "Top Track"? - BuffaloBob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0maybe I'm wrong but I would say the whole O&A vs. Howard Stern argument is much like the IE vs. Firefox one.
I used to like Howard too, just like IE. Then I was introduced to Firefox / O&A. At first I thought, this is just an IE / Howard Stern ripoff, but the more you use / listen to the new one, the more you think to yourself, how did I ever live with IE / Howard Stern.
Facts are facts...
O&A > Howard Stern
Firefox > IE
Thunderbird > Outlook Express
Am I wrong? - Egress99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ham Samich:
Either you are 15 or 35, pick the age group. Either way, you come off sounding like a complete dolt. You did a great job in repeating the media and their painted picture of O&A.
You might have listened for 5 minutes, if ever at all.
Opie and Anthony are probably one of the most comically progressive acts in some time.
That Dopie and Asswipe line was great too! How did you think of something that witty? Genius i tell you, pure genius...Spoken like a true Stern fan.
You know what, on second thought, stick with Stern, he's right up your alley.
You stink and i dont like you.
(PS Opie was a nickname from childhood. His real name is Greg) - djdigital, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sirius Rocks.
http://www.sirius.com/gs/s50/ - juscuz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Bob and Tom are the kings of morning radio. I just wish they were on XM or Serius.
- stickyboot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sat radio is really dumnb. I was trying it out in this one rental car i was driving and it kept cutting out. Who would really want to pay for radio. Its like, you dont get less adds.
- Egress99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is quickly dwindeling to an O&A(and Ron and Fez) / Stern Battle.
To those who listened during the whole WNEW days (old talk radio station in the NYC area) know the clear winners.
oh, and Don and Mike = the ***** list. hacks - graphicNature, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've got XM. It came with the new truck I purchased about a year ago. Which is why XM has more subscribers than Sirius. I'm happy with the selection though it reminds me of digital cable where you have hundreds of channels but still find yourself using the same 2 or 3. I still don't mind paying the subscription fee to get rid of the commercials. That and my local stations completely suck.
- BuffaloBob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Stern has been phoning it in for a while now. I feel bad for the people that are going to rush out and buy Sirius expecting to hear Howard 5 days / week, when he's only going to be on 4, not to mention Artie has already announced that he doesn't plan to move to satellite with the crew.
Artie is the last bit of funny on Stern, after he's gone, the only reason to listen to Stern will be to see what the O&A pests do to his show.
Also, someone asked why anyone would pay for radio....
No commercials is the most obvious reason, but here's mine.
Since I picked up XM, I've not only heard a bunch of songs that totally rocked and would never EVER be played on terrestrial, but you also get to hear old songs. Songs that I haven't heard for years and perhaps wouldn't have remembered if I didn't hear it on XM.
O&A PARTY ROCK!!!
Happy Birthday lil' Jimmy - Egress99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey Stickyboot, saying "sat radio is really dumb" is akin to saying cable tv was a bad idea, or highspeed internet isnt really needed.
Way to write it off.
This whole internet thing is really dumb too, right? - Egress99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0TO THE ***** REPEATING THE BEETLEJUICE SONG:
HOW IS THAT COMICAL IN ANY WAY?
SORRY, IT'S JUST A LITTLE DIFFICULT TO LAUGH AT SOMETHING SO HACKY, I'M TOO BUSY LISTENING TO JIMMY NORTON TALKING ABOUT ***** HOOKERS IN GREAT DETAIL, AND A PUNCHLINE TO BOOT. - paddler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0NASCAR radio?? That must be highly entertaining. Maybe XM will counter with the Bob Ross channel...
"He's dipping his brush.... not a sound coming from the audience, the anticipation is palatable ... Wow, did you see that Dave? What a color! A brillint stroke of muted crimson now makes the sunset appear to jump off thecanvas!" - nuclearpenguins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Until Infinity/Westwood1/ClearChannel/PremierRadioNetworks/Etc get onboard with satalite radio I wont bother. I happen to like a lot of the shows that these companies offer and why should I switch to a service (That I'd have to pay for) that doesn't carry any of the shows I like?
That and until they put The Don & Mike Show on it I won't bother. Screw O&A, Don and Mike are where it's at! - aznboi04k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i wish the article would mention which service is better overall. still hard to choose which the service comparison.
- dgstinner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have XM and I love it. I wish I could hear NFL on it but I still get the scores on the bottom of my XM receiver. They really need to do something similar to cable TV where XM and Sirius would be like HBO and Showtime. Then you would subscribe to them through another company. That way you could get the best of both. I could listen to O&A, NFL, NHL, MLB, and a show I haven't heard in a while, the Radio Chick.
- teamparadox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Im getting Sirius for one reason, Stern. I had XM for a while and wasnt a big fan, they had nothing for me.
- spacecowboy1880, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0what about all the big 10 college football that xm has?
xm wins. stern is overrated. - Dolemack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ron and Fez are on XM. Go with XM.
- clancywiggum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well I think that people dont know about XM's deal with WorldSpace - thats europe's sat radio. http://www.xmradio.com/newsroom/screen/pr_2005_07_19.html thats a good link.
- Zeush8su, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sirius or XM it doesn't matter as long as you can listen to music instead of commercials on regular radio it freaking rocks.By the way I've had Sirius since its launch date...
- veneric, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is beeetle!! he's the baddest cat and he knows that he's the best!
Stern all the way. The guy is hilarious and the new show will be even better. - ProAm500, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If Surius can get a device to replace my beloved MyFi, then MAYBE Ill think about switching...until then the MyFi is what keeps me...
- bobtimmons, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Couple things - as many have said, the site it outdated and I agree with bvaughn, it seems to be biased toward Sirius. It's not worth the Digg in my opinion.
If I were a programmer (which I am not) I'd conclude:
if fan="Stern"
goto Sirius
if fan="O&A"
goto XM
else stick with terrestrial
end - Egress99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0To the Stern fans, I have a question? Where did you guys find the time machine to blast back to 1992 to find anything he says funny?
Fact Sheet to Fact Sheet, XM is the far better company. Musically and Financially.
That being said...
...O AND A PARTY ROCK! - lauridsd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0XM has the Playboy Channel $2.99 /month?? WTF? What exactly is this broadcast?
- ViperDKM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have both, and both are much better than the FCC controlled terrestrial radio.
