- scanman20, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21The good news is, your can of beer will always be frosty cold. The bad news is, your can of beer now costs $87.
- blackb0x, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15mmMM.....LED Beer
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15What is this "can" of beer of which they speak of. Beer comes in bottles!
http://www.joshwillis.net/gallery2/v/beer - brianegge, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14This will be perfect for the military. They can afford the price tag, and have long needed instant beer to go along with their MRE's (Meal Ready to Eat).
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14mmm less fluid for more money, just what I wanted... oh wait.
It's a nice concept though. - TugsMcgroin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Wait till the case modders get their hands on one. Soon we will have LED display showing us the exact temperature of the beer inside.
- abbtech, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Starting a bar tab will now require a credit check :)

Guess I should have put beer in the tittle. :P - ThatsUnpossible, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I think the point is you would use this type of can when you aren't near a fridge...
- Eliminator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4What is this bottle you speak of? Beer comes in kegs, served under the pressure provided from CO2 or hand, in a glass.
- petomni, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4there is a big difference between cooling 30 degrees F and the actual temperature of 30 degrees, i'm sorry but you didnt look at that close enough
- celeb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Yeah, who spends more than 5 minutes with a can of beer anyways? Where's my sponsor:) haha
- diggenerate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3this news is about 2 years old...watch the discovery channel from time to time.
- nork, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4so, if I crush this thing on my forhead, will I get cancer?
- SpacemanSpiff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The coldest beer I ever drank came out of an Iron City Beer aluminum bottle...
http://images.ihatemycubicle.com/aluminumbeerbottles.jpg - Kitsune818, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I actually saw this on Mr. Wizard in ~1986 (although it was a soda can). This is pretty old news.
- tavisjohn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Hmm.... I could do that... OR I could fill a cooler with ice, water, and salt, and have a nice cool 16oz beer in about 5 minutes! (And so could all my friends.)
- sandwichpants, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Darn right beer comes in a bottle! And then it goes in a glass, if you ask me, which no one did, but I say so anyway.
That's a gallery of fine brews there, I've had many of them myself. Unfortunately not much of the west coast (stone, avery) stuff makes it out here to Michigan.
Another tip for getting beer somewhat cold to start out with is to run it under cold tap water for a few minutes (showers work well for this). It might not get really cold, but the convection of all that cold water moving over it will cool it quite quickly.
I just keep my beer in a special minifridge just for beer, modified to stay at about 50°F, but I drink fancypants beer and I age lots of it before I drink it. American lagers like to be colder... - bejurin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Good beer doesn't get put in a can, just the fizzy yellow industrial crap.
- fr0z3nph03n1x, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This is cool, but if its 90 degrees F out and you get it, your drink is only gonna be 60ish degrees F, aka WARM. : (
- clownguyx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4It's about time. I was sick of seeing this medical breakthroughs involving AIDS and Cancer. Finally, something important.
- lazerdave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Not true! I took 10 cases of Newcastle in cans to Burning Man this last year. You won't believe how happy people were to be handed an ice cold can of that.
Mmmmmmmm ice cold brown ale on the playa.......... - goatrandy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3landstander - Ice ruins it. It gets all melty*, and then your beer is watered down. :)
* Yes, I just made that word up. Deal. - goatrandy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You sir, are an idiot. The link you posted is to THIS digg. I just can't believe people bought it. F00.
- mayhemt, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9put a normal beer can in damn freezer for 3 mins in between ice ...u will get the same thing...
- pmcall221, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This was on Beyond Tomorrow awhile back too. Maybe I should start submitting stories I see on "beyond tomorrow".
- Alaerus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy."
--Benjamin Franklin - goatrandy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, there is. The one in the top left corner is the prototype. Also on the linked site there are more.
- fallscrape, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Actually the best beer comes out of my secondary fermenting barrel... and so cheap at 30p a pint...
- aposter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2goatrandy,
And with many beeers you would notice how? - Sell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Now nerds have something else to drink besides Zima
- damonlab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Mythbusters had a special on the fastest way to chill an unopened beer. The fastest least expensive option was to put it in salty ice water. The salt lowers the melting point of the ice. The beer will go from room temperature to cold in under five minutes.
- goatrandy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2wastern - Some of us can't afford good beer. I only get them on special occasions. :(
Unless you're buying... - wastern, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3stop drinking cheap crap beer and you'll notice
- chigaze, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"When activated, the all natural desiccant contained within a vacuum draws the heat from the beverage through the evaporator"
So what's the desiccant? They make claims it's safe but they don't identify what it is. Also, are the cans going be recyclable or this going direct a whole lot of aluminum to the landfill?
(Oh and beer comes in bottles) :) - alf86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Did they really make a bigger can that holds less?
- GabeDiaz, on 11/27/2008, -1/+2can i still recycle it for pennies?
man imagine the bum wars over these cans if you could get $.25 fo reach can!! - papageorgio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Nicely put. Another way to cool your beverage down (in a cooler) is to put some salt in with the ice. Saw it on Mythbusters.
- honkerdown, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I think this is old news. I seem to recall seeing this same thing several years ago.
- Crazyguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yeah, how are they going to dispose of these cans?
- menos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Only 30 degrees? The only place I can see this idea working is out, away from civilization. If the air temp is 90F the tech is only going to get the drink down to 60F... Thats not that cold at all.....
- petomni, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2how about thermodynamics? Two things seem very likely (unless there is some kind of chemical reaction I'm not seeing here) , If it cools in 3 minutes it will likely heat back up in 3 minutes and secondly, one side of the can will get 30 degrees hotter.
- itchyfeet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The Japanese did this several years ago...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I submitted this 242 days ago. I guess I win. Hooray for lame duplicate posts.
http://digg.com/links/The_Self-Chilling_Beer_Can - JeffBoyaredi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Like many, many other digg users, I wasn't on Digg 242 days ago-- so I thank goatrandy for this post.
I suggest you focus all your "lame dupe" angst toward finding new stories to post. - matrixclown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1its what they use to dry flowers and clovers and all that scrap booking junk... it isnt toxic.... i hope. owell it tasted good
- rabiddogma, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Too bad most beer that comes in a can tastes like ***** no matter how cold it is.
Not to mention just about the wost thing you can do to beer--other than waste it--is to let it get warm and cool it again. - loker269, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I seen these on the science channel a month or two ago it is awesome!
they had the host try it and they said it worked really well....and that it should only cost a couple of pennies more per can.....so who knows maybe this will catch on..... - dasch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This may just be the best article ever seen on digg!
