- cwcheang, on 10/12/2007, -6/+122ohh.. myspace..
it will cause more deaths than any other terrorists attack if it was bombed - spengy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+98The loss of Myspace and its throng of grammatically challenged teenagers might not be a bad thing. A net gain for the internet!
- akinder, on 10/12/2007, -7/+90Ok it's time for a new joke, seriously
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+62I'd like to get next to that breaker box and accidentally flip the switch marked "MySpace."
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+56Holy *****.. THIS IS GEEK HEAVEN!!
- Warptera, on 10/12/2007, -0/+53My favorite part was with the giant fans. That guy practically lost an arm closing the door. :o
- _Caboose_, on 10/12/2007, -4/+54Nono, of course not... even Ted Stevens agrees the Internet isn't a big truck that you can just dump something on. It's obviously a series of... interconnected networks.

She basically says whatever she can remember of what the engineers try to explain to her, lol. - treelovinhippie, on 10/12/2007, -5/+41Why does the CNET video software suck so much.
I'm on a ***** connection so streaming is difficult... I press pause thinking it will continue downloading, but no. Damnit. - hriwo, on 10/12/2007, -8/+43You mean it's not a truck?
- mistercoffee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+29My old company's site was hosted at an Equinix facility. They're pretty cool places - they've got showers, lounges, offices, meeting rooms, video game rooms, and lab areas (where you can work on your own hardware if you need to). Also has a pretty neat fire suppression system that uses multiple stages to try to contain the fire and minimize damage to equipment.
Spent many the night/weekend at Equinix, working on servers... - Machismo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+31Fantastic video! Very informative, although the woman's knowledge of electrical systems was flawed on a couple minor points. I doubt she is really part of the technical or engineering staff of the facility.

No way! Internet tubes is the new "all your base are belong to us": no matter how much you hate hearing about it, it'll never go away.
Oh, and by the way, all your tubes are belong to Ted Stevens :) - bdub92, on 10/12/2007, -11/+37No tubes?? That is BS, this is so not real!
- steal_apps01, on 10/12/2007, -6/+31i'd love for myspace to go down, no more pediphiles and more bandwidth for important things like bittorrent and the p2p networks.
- geekdreams, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24Actually, they're just connected to an open WiFi network across the street.
- bobetr, on 11/27/2008, -2/+24literally! wow she likes saying that
regardless, if that facility were to be held hostage by terrorists they could one by one execute websites and companies or even groups at a time.
oh and one crazy person needs to try and drive a vw through one of those tubes, - cody50, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25That was, Literally, one of the coolest things ever.
- KriTenKs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22Wasn't the Digg CEO(Jay) the founder of Equinix? What happened, shouldn't he be really rich?
- frascellyboy273, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21wow, thats awesome, i wish they wouldve focused on something other than the power though...what about the amount of servers, or the amount of data maybe, well thats probably classified, no?
- evilelf2407, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21all i could think about the entire time was taking a wooden baseball bat to all the servers, and then logging on the internet to see what happened. that would be crazy.
- complex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Yes, he co-founded Equinix. http://www.equinix.com/press/press/2005/10_13_05.htm And who says he isn't really rich? ;)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Man, I could use the power meter as a fan!
- kampfy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17I regularly have to go to the Equinix in Dulles, VA to support a client of ours that has a cage there...the security is absolutely ridiculous and if it weren't for the obscene amount of physical exertion required (un-mounting a 180 pound storage array mounted 6 and a half feet in the air? uhhh, no thanks) then that would be by far the coolest part of my job.
- AbortedFetus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17It's really no secret how a datacenter runs. It's not like they went into IBM's section and explained how it is exactly laid out and such.
- cliffzdude, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20Huge Diesel Generators. ARR ARR ARR, more power.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20@JimXugle
I pride myself on using the 'spell checker'. - AceTracer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15I'm willing to bet this isn't on any of those terrorist target lists either, but it's ok because we have the petting zoo and roller rink covered.
- Agret, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15MySpace have more than one datacenter.
- tastethevenom, on 10/12/2007, -8/+21But just hearing her talk... and point to major components of the Internet...
In a word: HOT! - scaper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13lol, I'm surprised they were allowed to have boxes on the floor in that one cage, Equinix usually ***** a brick if you have stuff like that laying around.
- jayadelson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I do.
- mrpizza, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Very cool...
Kevin visited this center back on the screensavers days I think... - mickaloha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10So now I know why cnet was there when I visited my cage on that day.
Scaper, you can have boxes in front of your cage as long as you are in your cage working and people and other equipment can get by. You can not leave the boxes unattended for days on end though.
As for security, this location is locked down. You have to hand scan just to get into the building, sign in at the front, then go through the corridor requires two (like a prison) and to get to the co-lo floor takes another and the final and fifth one is to enter your cage.
No food or drink is allowed on the co-lo floor. I wouldn't try to sneak any in either since there are cameras in each cage to see every angle. Need to scratch your butt? Better go to the bathroom because it will be picked up on camera.
Overall, it is a good facility. And as with most companies, you do not deal with just one co-lo. Most companies have disaster recovery sites in different parts of the country to prevent something like a major catastrophe from taking down their web sites. The particular co-lo is rated to sustain a 9.5 earthquake. - harmlessinc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Local Equinix center is the same way.
Elevator up to the pre-lobby (9 foot high all steel door) - into the lobby with the 2 inch thick glass protecting the security/admins. 5 doors leading out of that area, all man trap style, all pin number/hand scanner combo locks and that's just to get into the employee/contractor work area. More security to get into the actual cage areas.
Tons of fun. Still remember first time in there wondering whose idea it was to light the hallways with red and blue lights... heh - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Nah, it's ok, they don't mind showing big datacenters to the public, as long as they don't reveal the NSA's secret room snooping on your traffic.
- quietbob, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13this Internet feeds on our electricals
- LucasVB, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Oh crap, cnet! Their ***** flash player uses the flash steraming protocol, so it restarts downloading if you hit pause (meaning you can't let it buffer or find a way to download flv)
It's so annoying for us who have slow connections, and pretty much makes it unwatchable. ***** you cnet. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11i wanna marry that woman
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10If you really want it bad, maybe (not sure0 you could record whats happening on screen? Then crop the video..sort of ghetto, but it might work.
- kampfy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Well, there are only 24 drives in each server, so that accounts for only 50 pounds of the weight. The time taken by taking all the drives out and putting them back in isn't worth the amount of weight saved by using that method, because we're generally expected to have any maintenance done within 10 minutes.
I also read somewhere that the blue / red lights in dark areas is a security measure, so that people in one cage can't see the equipment being stored in adjacent cages. I could be mistaken, though. - perfectsquare, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I think this is one of my favorite stories/videos ever posted on digg. Good stuff.
- dgolding, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9She's the head of marketing for the company, and is at least as knowledgable as any of the sales engineers. She's a very smart person, but not an engineer. Some of the folks working for her are incredibly knowledgable engineers, however.
This is Equinix, so there's not so much of the "client IT guy" - they deal with pretty high-level network engineers and architects for major carriers and content providers who know whats up. - konno, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13I love it .... but not sure how happy IBM or News Corp would have been having thier infastructure aired in the open like this. Of course CNet would have asked first but strikes me as very unusual the customers allowed this info out.
- da233, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13I'm going to have to get one of those cooling fans for my rig...
- phatvolvo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12FTP knows the joke:
451 Transfer aborted. Broken pipe. - dgolding, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8There are literally hundreds of pairs of optical fibers running into Equinix facilities with multiple lit terrabits per second of capacity.
- Zhay, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9T1? I think the line would be a little faster than T1... and it probably wouldn't be one line.. we need a crew of ninjas!
- mancat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9You might think about taking some of the drives out. It's better than dropping the array and destroying most of them. Someone dropped a SAN array at my last job. That pretty much ruins your week.
