- RealmDown, on 10/09/2008, -2/+28What would be really cool is a university, on behalf of a 20,000+ student body, filing a counter suit.
- enantiodromia, on 10/09/2008, -2/+23hell yeah. go go santa cruz banana slugs.
- diggduggDOOM, on 10/09/2008, -2/+17Go Go Fightin' Banana Slugs!
- cjsan, on 10/09/2008, -0/+13I'm a student at UCSC and this is news to me...they threatened us not to download and said they would cooperate with the RIAA.
- vtnerd, on 10/09/2008, -1/+13umm no. I would try to get actual proof. Wireless access points and even dorm ethernet jacks can be broken into and swapped, respectively.
The owner of an IP address is not automatically the guilty party because a file was shared using their connection.
Furthermore, even if you can prove a certain computer used a certain IP address at a certain time (you can't really do this, but I'll indulge you) shared something. You still can't prove who was at that computer at the time the sharing occurred. I'm not guilty if you steal my gun and go kill someone unless it can be proven that I knew ahead of time that I knew about the theft and about your plans. I'm also not guilty if you do something illegal with my computer or internet connection because I didn't actually do anything except own a computer or an internet connection.
The RIAA should only be going after people it can absolutely prove are guilty. Unless BitTorrent is going to start hacking into your webcam and taking your picture while you share stuff (this could be forged as well) there is no way to prove who is guilty. Hence, the RIAA should do the responsible thing and quit suing people that it knows it cannot prove did anything wrong. - cadmiumpaint, on 10/09/2008, -3/+13big surprise that people in Santa Cruz are revolting against the man.
- flannerus, on 10/09/2008, -1/+11I'm chilling at UCSC right now, and also a frequent downloader; ***** kudos to us Slugs for this stand. Sometimes it might seem like there's not much legitimate protest going on in modern times (or maybe that the effectiveness is diminished) but rather than saving three trees in a parking lot, lets stand for something that actually makes a difference across the country, eh?
- glucoseboy, on 10/09/2008, -2/+12Good for them. Go Slugs!
- schoi, on 10/09/2008, -1/+11Wow, what's really cool about this is that UCSC is using a Federal law, so if it is upheld, any university (or educational institution) in the whole country might use it as a precedent.
Unlike the case involving UPenn (mentioned later in the story) which applies only to Eastern Pennsylvania ...
Good going Banana Slugs! - mttmcgrgr, on 10/09/2008, -1/+11As a UCSC alum, I can say that just about everything gets protested there, but its nice when that attitude gets applied to things like this.
- slug007, on 10/09/2008, -3/+12Hopefully the Chancellor wont commit suicide over this.
- antoniuk, on 10/09/2008, -0/+7dugg for slug!
- vsujohn2, on 10/09/2008, -1/+8Who said slugs have no spine? HA!
- bbliss17, on 10/09/2008, -1/+8Santa Cruz University = my hero
- TTT1, on 10/09/2008, -0/+6I have not heard any of this on KZSC, or on campus for that matter.
It would be great if the word got out. It's something that I think a lot of students would be totally into.
First Rain...4/20...painting of the sea lion...F- The RIAA Day?
You never know. - rsimms, on 10/09/2008, -0/+6Saqer said "I hope every single guilty person gets what's coming. I ***** don't believe you hypocrites who sit here and babble about the RIAA but if you were in the RIAA's position you'd have done the same exact thing. Welcome to capitalism you dumbasses."
Welcome to America. Where you are presumed innocent until proven guilty. The RIAA has no proof that these particular people did anything wrong and it is up to them (the accuser) to provide actual evidence. - sbusta, on 10/09/2008, -0/+5I'm with the other SC students, this is news to me. I even work for ResNet, our residential network support for on campus students. And this is where they go when they get caught. And haven't heard a word about this. I hope this gets out into the open more, more people will be happy to hear about this protest instead of the people in the trees protest... damn hippies...

- kdepa, on 10/09/2008, -0/+4I go to UCSC as well - good to hear that we're finally taking a stand against the RIAA - surprised this hasn't happened earlier

and ***** em all for the dmca! - NZN444, on 10/09/2008, -2/+6Hope you all have muskets in your closets... your freedoms have price tags. Some of them may eventually cost you your life.
In a socio-economic universe...there is only ONE condition more powerful than freedom... ownership.
What do you own?
Do you own your own identity?
Do you own your own money?
Do you own your own country?
*****... on the other side of Napster was a marketing system... but first you have to own something before you can commence trading from the position of an owner. Suppliers vs Consumers is the oldest game in the books. 70% of our economy is consumer driven. What do you own as a consumer? Do you own your marketplace? Do you own the connection that the market is distributed through? Do you own your attention? Do you own your own mind and body and the decisions that emanates from their combining?
We can not distribute digital property effectively in the long-term because "free" is always a possibility, "free" does not pay salaries, and there is only one thing better than "free"... and that is ownership. Slaves dont think they can own the plantation... they just want to be employed by it.
You can own the plantation. We all can.
America, Inc.
Universally Distributed Private Ownership.
Start thinking.... - drex8, on 10/09/2008, -0/+4%u2013 THE RIAA!!
- dondara, on 10/09/2008, -1/+4***** you bootlicker.
- inactive, on 10/09/2008, -2/+5RIAA can eat some chocolate starfish.
- vtnerd, on 10/09/2008, -1/+4Too bad the pussies here at Virginia Tech won't stand up to them.
Not that it matters to me personally; I stopped pirating, by and large, when Metallica killed the good Napster and I don't live on campus. - saisumimen, on 10/10/2008, -0/+3Think about it; if they released the news early that they were going to fight back, students would've leaked the news all over the web, giving the RIAA more time to prepare.
- raintheory, on 10/09/2008, -0/+3whats with the image?! do the RIAA now send riot police?
- machobullshit, on 10/10/2008, -0/+3Hell yeah! Now I don't have to feel bad for running Bittorrent while digging here on my dorm room here at UCSC!
- UglyBunny, on 10/10/2008, -0/+2I lol'd.
- thegameguru2, on 10/10/2008, -0/+2Banana Slugs for the win!
- CatsAreGods, on 10/09/2008, -0/+2Er, I thought it was up to the police to provide actual evidence. Since when does the RIAA have legal standing to run its own investigations and present them to the court? What is this, Jennifer Government or something?
- compu73rg33k, on 10/10/2008, -0/+2No known predators either! RIAA = first?
- NZN444, on 10/10/2008, -0/+2nuf said.
- socalftw, on 10/09/2008, -2/+4lol mp3 police...i wouldn't be surprised if the picture was real. the riaa will pull anything out of their ass to scare people into settling.
- juliohm, on 10/10/2008, -0/+2I just noticed now, but it's funny how you never read any piece of news anywhere on the web in favor of the RIAA, MPAA or the entertainment industry... Wherever you read about it, it's always bad publicity for them. They are always the bad guys, even though they (theoretically) they use all legal means necessary to protect what's rightfully...
awh, ***** it... i can't even pretend to like them anymore :( - mt4055, on 10/10/2008, -0/+2Say what?
- scarredup, on 10/09/2008, -0/+2Now if only my school could grow a spine and realize that the word of the RIAA isn't law. They are just a lobbying group with a lot of money for hiring lawyers.
- boneit, on 10/09/2008, -0/+2And they still don't have the bottle to try this ***** on with Harvard. Can't think why...
- LilRabbitFooFoo, on 10/10/2008, -0/+2Those contractors in Iraq are going to need work soon enough...

- BobCock, on 10/09/2008, -0/+2wonder if they're talking about this on KZSC
- bowlesman11, on 10/10/2008, -0/+2Yeah, go banana slugs!
- kirado4, on 10/09/2008, -1/+3@ saqer.. just remember you are guilty until proven innocent.. go to jail..
- 7aji, on 10/10/2008, -0/+2I know, usually they just smoke pot and talk crap all the time.
- kirado4, on 10/09/2008, -0/+2that's why saqer is a ***** idiot.. misses the point entirely as usual.. it happens to people who are greedy..
- lamejoketeller, on 10/09/2008, -0/+2Finally the heads of my university do something I approve of, instead of ***** like cutting down tree 9 to build a chemical weapons research facility.
- geniusNOTatWORK, on 10/09/2008, -0/+1From RA training, it was my understanding that FERPA was only used for those crazy, over protective parents who haven't talked to little Jimmy for 2 hours and are frantically calling the Residential Service Office trying to contact him because they're afraid he's finally trying "college." Glad to see FERPA can be used against the RIAA as well.
