- alwaysdeparting, on 06/28/2008, -6/+145In Soviet Russia, you don't search the internet - internet searches you.
Oh wait, they do that here in the U.S. too. - theaceoffire, on 06/29/2008, -1/+38Am I the only one who googled Yandex?
- inactive, on 06/29/2008, -1/+30Cool, a global search engine fight.
- groo68, on 06/29/2008, -0/+27You can probably use google language tools to translate it for you.
- inactive, on 06/29/2008, -1/+25Yandex is much more convenient than google as far as search in RU-net is concerned... is has also some original and very useful features like showing where traffic jams in Moscow are....
However today Google has launched a huge Ad campaign in Moscow so I think that soon Google to beat Yandex - YoWhatDaFuxUp, on 06/29/2008, -4/+26Обновите свой браузер! Firefox 3 особенно хорош с Яндекс.Баром

- wrathchilde, on 06/29/2008, -1/+16Don't be evil.
- beartamer, on 06/29/2008, -0/+10go http://ya.ru for a simplified search input
- CaviMike, on 06/29/2008, -1/+10I yandex'd google.
- aladrin, on 06/29/2008, -0/+9Your review of a search only includes looking at the front page? Cripes.
- z987k, on 06/29/2008, -3/+12while I can't read Russian, I can say this, the front page is littered with annoying *****. Banner ad, text of who knows what, hat even if it did intrest me I don't want it there. That's one beauty about Google's main page. Simple.
- beabis, on 06/29/2008, -3/+11Now I can Yandex all those wives they never shipped me.
- twtmc, on 06/29/2008, -4/+12Check out Yandex's site. It looks like a pretty good search engine. Just on the front page I see soccer scores and a banner promoting Firefox 3.
- Prodigyman, on 06/29/2008, -0/+7Guilty as charged
- Farmer77, on 06/29/2008, -1/+8I like how Yandex list the favicon next to each site on their serps.
- aguynamedjoe36, on 06/29/2008, -0/+7I would not want to go to Amsterdam and wake up regretful after getting "googled" the night before either.
- alexkorova, on 06/29/2008, -0/+7Sure, that's true, but don't kid yourself, the same thing happens in most countries to various degrees. The US is pretty good at it too (sometimes *very* good).
- life38, on 06/29/2008, -10/+16Russia is always set up to allow its own companies to get a leg up, using the same ideas of the USA companies.
- atlquaker, on 06/29/2008, -2/+8I asked Yandex what happens when you look into Putin's eyes. It replied "when you look into the eyes of Putin, you are able to get a sense of his soul."
- inactive, on 06/29/2008, -0/+5I googled your mom all night long.
- Temo1, on 06/29/2008, -1/+6In china they use baidu as their main search engine, while in Japan yahoo has a much larger market share than Google does here (still less than google). In fact, google in general does not enjoy as much dominance in non-US/UK markets. Luckily for them, most of the revenue is in the US market.
- julianrod, on 06/30/2008, -0/+4Dugg for the twist... Mr. Shyamalan.
- nurriz, on 06/29/2008, -0/+4I think there's as much a chance the US government snooping as there is the russian.
- burjzyntski, on 06/29/2008, -0/+4Yandex does have a "lite" version, for those of you/us who prefer a Google-esque, no-ads-on-the-site, plain Russian search engine.
http://www.ya.ru/ - peaceninja, on 06/29/2008, -1/+5can anyone post the english version of yandex? or is there not an english version?
- inactive, on 06/29/2008, -4/+8mmmm...borscht!
- twtmc, on 06/30/2008, -0/+4Well what else am I supposed to review a Russian language search engine on? It's not that easy to just put in some words and search and make my decisions based on that, because I don't know what Russian sites are popular.
- sunnytar, on 06/29/2008, -0/+3Well, while it's true, this is not an example of that.
Russian language is very complex, and Google is just not good enough with it. - 32bytes, on 06/29/2008, -1/+4At least it looks slightly less cluttered than Yahoo.
- EvilCleric, on 06/30/2008, -0/+3/Sigh
Just googled for my dentist in Moscow (Профессорская стоматология), the school I graduated from (Школа 123 при МПС СССР), the Navy unit I served in (sorry, classified ;), a beautiful lake in Murmansk, Russia (озеро Семёновское), my friend (a professor at an established university in Moscow)
... No results.
Conducted the same search in Yandex - plenty of info on all the listed subjects, including maps, addresses, pics, etc.
While it seems "stupid patriotism of the Brutal Russian Bear" comments still remain a vogue among Americans and "Soviets" alike, Yandex definitely deserves much credit for providing IMHO the best search engine for ru-net AND so far successfully withstanding the onslaught of Google .
Just don't try to use Yandex on the rest of the internets though :) - anthortic, on 06/30/2008, -0/+3all competitive country's all over the world do that, including the USA and my dear sweet UK, and why is it a problem?
- nirvaorg, on 06/30/2008, -0/+3borsh is ukrainian. not russian.
- nurriz, on 06/29/2008, -0/+3That's actually a neat presentation.
- beartamer, on 06/29/2008, -0/+3ya.ru goes for a simplified interface.. and it's much simpler than google
- ne0codex, on 06/29/2008, -0/+3we have that in America too...
- inactive, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2Do you think that being good have anything to do with it? Don't be silly! Do you think things would be any different in America if MSN or Yahoo! had a better algorithm than Google? They may have it right now but things won't change, is just the way things are. Market inertia...
- Eddiecoaster, on 06/29/2008, -0/+2i like that simple interface
- Pundan, on 06/30/2008, -1/+3You sir are an extremely funny person! Good Luck with your further adventures on the internets.
- polumrak, on 06/29/2008, -0/+2http://ya.ru
- mohamedmansour, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2Not really ... Even simpler than google homepage is Yandex homepage ..., Russians are familiar with .ru more than .com, and ya is simpler than google to remember and type. Hence, http://ya.ru
See how simple the leading search engine is for russia? Simpler than Google ... Google has a hard fight! - Insane40k, on 06/29/2008, -4/+6I'm Russian and I hate Yandex since it sucks in one field - search. Results on their search page completely suck, even in russian language. Yes, it has a lot of features, but most of them are edgy soulless "metoo" copies of popular global services.
The only reason they're still popular is stupid patriotism. - preved, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1I have no clue why people digg this comment down. It states simple facts, which almost every Russian has experienced.
Yandex indeed finds things better in Russian segment of internet. - iticu, on 06/30/2008, -0/+1Obligatory; "What ads?" comment.
- craterburnsu, on 06/29/2008, -0/+1Really? I kinda would, sounds sexy.
- mohamedmansour, on 06/30/2008, -2/+3Same ideas of USA Companies? What I recall, USA companies buy many smaller international companies and take ideas from them. USA is even trying to remove freedom from those countries, for instance, Sweden download laws, International foreign policy. So don't give me this bs and say other countries copying ideas that are coming from USA.
