- inactive, on 12/06/2007, -3/+74We ordered a Wii from them about 2 months ago and have yet to receive it. Their package invoice stated 12 lbs and included a Wii but when it arrived it was only 4lbs with no Wii inside. We tried filing a claim against the mail carrier but the carrier said we could not because CompUSA was the shipper. After numerous calls and emails, CompUSA will not take the necessary steps to file a claim for us because they state they shipped it with a Wii inside, therefore they are free from liability.
For two months it has been like pulling teeth trying to get someone from CompUSA to even talk to us- no response to emails or calls. When we do get someone to talk to us, it's always empty promises or "drop transfers".
It's looking like we are out of a Wii and the $257 too. At least we received the extra Wii-motes and accessories, but no Wii.
I know I'll never give my business to them again, and I'll make damn sure other people know how bad CompUSA too. - BigManOnCampus, on 12/06/2007, -2/+62Meh, Best Buy is no better. Frys electronics is the only thing left for me for quick in-and-out-I-know-what-I-want trips.
- rmw132, on 12/06/2007, -4/+63Not surprised.
- inactive, on 12/06/2007, -0/+49I used to work at that place. I learned there that I hated my job, people are stupid *****, rebates don't work, how to avoid getting yelled at, what NOT to do if I ever own my business, and how to be ethical by doing the exact opposite of what my bosses did.
- Error601, on 12/06/2007, -0/+44The last few times I went into one, the place looked trashed and empty. They also seem to be trying to re-merchandise to make it into a Best Buy and got rid of all the stuff I usually get there. They ditched a lot of professional gear a replaced it with cheap consumer stuff. It's pretty much mail order for anything high end these days.
- TheAngryMob, on 12/06/2007, -0/+43That's why you call your credit card company (the one with which you paid for the Wii) and explain it to them. They'll charge back the cost. That'll get CompUSA's attention.
- fixyourthinking, on 12/06/2007, -1/+43What they've been called over the years: The KMart Of Komputers / DumpUSA / NoComplimentsUSA /ComplaintsUSA
- pizza, on 12/06/2007, -0/+30Why the hell didn't you contest the charge with your credit card? It might be too late at this point...
- brentley, on 12/06/2007, -4/+28I love it when a plan comes together... :-)
- MikeBasinger, on 12/06/2007, -0/+23I stopped going there a couple of years ago for being called "stupid" by the check out clerk for refusing to purchase a extended warranty.
- luke123, on 12/06/2007, -0/+22The CompUSA's in our Boston area have already shut down.
- blackmage439, on 12/06/2007, -2/+23Frys' selection, inventory, and prices completely trump Worst Buy and Crap City. Their employees are still idiots, but how is that different from anywhere else?
- tendonut, on 12/06/2007, -0/+21That's pretty much the story of working at any retail store...I also learned while working at EB and Sam's Club that it doesn't pay to work hard. It just gives you more work than those who didn't work hard but for the same pay and higher expectations. Always do half-assed. Until retail stores learn to respect their employees, the trend of unhelpful employees who don't give a ***** about you will continue.
- NSMike, on 12/06/2007, -2/+22Me neither. They're like the EB Games of computer stores: overpriced merchandise, and not very diversified in their product base. They tried to turn into another circuit city for a little while there, but I think they fell victim to their store name.
- guinnessstout, on 12/06/2007, -0/+20Can't wait for the liquidation sales. 75% off everything!
- Nanite, on 12/06/2007, -0/+18Anyone know how I can be part of the inventory liquidation? Perhaps at ridiculous prices?
- Daugvolf, on 12/06/2007, -0/+16Sucks for us folks in Florida. With Comp USA gone, all we have for brick and mortar computer stores are Circuit City and Best Buy, which combined are ten times worse than Comp USA ever was. Damnit Frys, when are you going to open some Florida chains?!
- EXreaction, on 12/06/2007, -0/+16Even then you can probably buy the same thing off newegg for a lot less. :(
- TheAngryMob, on 12/06/2007, -0/+16I just wish they had those in more cities.
- joshhan, on 12/06/2007, -0/+15Don't worry. In a couple of months, consumers will have a choice of buying computers at compChina©.
Sad. I remember buying my very first DVD at CompUSA. Well, come to think of it, I don't remember buying much else since. - KingBabi, on 12/06/2007, -0/+15IF they all fail, go to a compUSA and take one and run.
- chroko, on 12/06/2007, -2/+16It'll always be CompUSSR to me.
- inactive, on 12/06/2007, -3/+17Ten years ago, a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn't commit. These men promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Los Angeles underground. Today, still wanted by the government, they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire... The A-Team.
- fonebone2, on 12/06/2007, -0/+14Call your state consumer protection agency.
- cirelo, on 12/06/2007, -3/+17comp who?
- Shawn4168, on 12/06/2007, -0/+13Also, be sure to contact the Better Business Bureau, your state's Attorney General office, etc.
- GhostFaced, on 12/06/2007, -1/+13Now if Circuit City would just go under for their ***** they pull with sales ads and all I'd be happy.
- sirbeta, on 12/06/2007, -0/+11I sent a rebate for an Samsung monitor I got about 4 years back. I made copies of everything, my receipts, my UPC code on the monolithic box, my warranty papers from Fry's, and anything else pertaining to the sale. Five weeks later, I get a letter telling me they can't verify my sale, and they will not be issuing me the rebate. So I mail in the copies I made this time, with every single piece of documentation of the sale, demanding that I get my rebate. Fry's even verified the sale. They mailed me again saying that there just wasn't any way for them to verify that I actually purchased the item and I would not be getting a rebate. - It's not just stupidity of the buyer. Mail-in rebates are borderline scams, and are very hit and miss.
- MikeCerm, on 12/06/2007, -0/+11I can't believe CompUSA has made it this far. Normal consumers don't go there, they go to Best Buy (or Walmart). Geeks don't go there, they get all their stuff online.
I also can't figure out how Circuit City has managed to stay in business either. In my area, the local Circuit City shares a parking lot with a Best Buy, and CC is always a ghost town. Maybe it's a regional thing. - damonic, on 12/06/2007, -0/+10Ummm, duh. Revenue tends to drop when you close more than half your stores.
- riverstyx, on 12/06/2007, -0/+10Yeah i remember compusa. They had a big store up the road from me which was extremely expensive and very limited on stock. 350w power supplies costed 60 bucks for the store-brand one, blank media dvd were 100 pack for 50 dollars, video games were limited and prices were terrible.
They had an in-store tech help desk, I didn't go there but they looked like geek-squad-school-dropouts.
But that wasn't the worst part, the worst part was their going out of business "sale". The prices they had on their closings were still more expensive then the Fry's electronics right down the road. A few months before officially closing, they hired transients to stand outside with "10-25% off closing sale" on every block within a 3 mile radius, paying them entirely in malt liquor to wave a sign and try not to look miserable. Most people waved back their middle fingers and I heard somebody painted one of them with a milkshake.
1 month before closing, those signs said "25%-30% off" and as time went on, those percentages increased. I went in the store every couple of weeks to see if they really were holding their end, but those signs turned out to be another lure.
Everything was for sale, even the light fixtures and the display racks and cases had a price tag on them. They hired a security guard (I guess compusa was imagining a huge crowd and wanted to prepare for the worst), and for some reason they had a lot of employees there standing around trying to deal out cell phone plans.
Oh, return policy and warranty: Non-existant. If you bought a piece of computer hardware and it didn't work, you were SOL and JWF. If you bought a movie and it was defective, they'd reach into their pockets and throw whatever change they had at you and tell you to call someone who cared. - kcfreels, on 12/06/2007, -0/+10No Fry's in Tennessee! I miss them from my time in California... Where else can you go to browse through motherboards?
- kenplaysviola, on 12/06/2007, -1/+10I'm willing to bet that those employees get a commission for every extended warranty they can sell. Since you hit him or her in the pocket books, he or she is pissed off at you.
- proliance, on 12/06/2007, -0/+9File a case in small claims court. They will have to choose between settling out of court or sending one of their high priced corporate lawyers which cost much more than a Wii.
- tendonut, on 12/06/2007, -1/+10The only reason I object to the closing of my local CompUSA is I was always able to buy there what no other store seemed to carry when I wasn't able to order something online (like my CPU heatsink fan when it seizes up and I need a new one NOW)....their customer service still sucked ass though. You better go in knowing exactly what you want and where it is. The dumb ***** there wouldn't be able to point you to a Socket 939 heatsink and fan if their lives depended on it. It's a shame local computer stores can't manage to stay open more than 6 months without gross overpricing on everything
- turbopro, on 12/06/2007, -0/+9I worked there for about a month after working for Best buy. I though Best buy wanted me to sell warranties and accessories. Not compared to Comp. They can honestly care less about what you buy there, so long as you buy the warranty. Hell, if they could sell warranty on a product that came with a lifetime warranty, they would, and probably do. Goes to show how much they really do care about the customers.
- inactive, on 12/06/2007, -1/+9Bad salesman, bad! Selling worthless rebates is how you earn your commission at CompUSA!
- inactive, on 12/06/2007, -2/+10All large market stores shutdown about a year ago.
- shadash, on 12/06/2007, -1/+8At least Fry's has cheap prices
- eggyacid, on 12/06/2007, -0/+7as a rep working closely with CompUSA here in Texas..... their inventory level and store traffic is definitely lower than last year
- EmperorAwesome, on 12/06/2007, -0/+7Just for comparison, worst Best Buy moment:
"Excuse me, where are the ethernet switches?"
"What?"
"Switches, they're kinda like routers, but simpler"
*Goes to ask his supervisor*
"Wow man, I have no idea what you're talking about, there's no such thing as that"
I walked over a couple aisles (where his supervisor was), and before I could say anything I saw, right beneath the routers, an entire row labeled "switches". - jdpeek0, on 12/06/2007, -0/+7I have worked at comp for the past 3 years, and there have been rumors that if we didnt do well during this holiday season we could be shutting down soon. This coming from middle management
- Forum, on 12/06/2007, -1/+8Where will I buy cases of Bawls then...
- mateo60, on 12/06/2007, -0/+7I'm surprised I haven't heard anyone mention this. If your city is large enough to have a CompUSA, it's probably likely to have several small independent computer retailers. Here in my area, there are several with knowledgeable staff who actually WANT your business, not just some $6/hr idiot.
Granted, there are a couple of independents around here that I wouldn't spend a dime in, but take the time and find a good place. Having a helpful, knowledgeable staff is so underrated these days. We get so mad at the Best Buy idiots, but we still spend our money there and ignore the other guys who charge $1 more, but actually have people who know about computers. - lonnieh, on 12/06/2007, -1/+8my worst frys moment:
"hey, do you have any pc card bluetooth adapters?"
"nope. they don't make those" and then the fathead turns around and walks away. wonderful service. - dafragsta, on 12/06/2007, -0/+6I <3 Fry's.
- mywhitenoise, on 12/06/2007, -1/+7UK
- tendonut, on 12/06/2007, -0/+6Dude, I completely forgot about that...Every 20-man LAN I have at my place always involves me becoming the repairman (man, man. man, man...) for every machine that takes a dump, so I was forced to run to CompUSA to buy them what they needed to continue playing (at their expense of course..I am not loaded). When I saw the stacks of cases of Bawls, I nearly wet myself..after that day, the ritualistic drive to compusa for Bawls became a staple at the Tendonut LANs.
- nickerbocker, on 12/06/2007, -0/+6One time the cashier at Best Buy tried to sell me an extended warranty on a $12 keyboard that I bought as a replacement until my keyboard that came with my computer was warranty replaced. I looked at her like she was stupid.
