The challenge isn't the hardware, it is the software. Today we have NO clue how we could emulate human intelligence, let alone emotion (probably a harder problem). The best theories we have today are untested, and likely will be for more than 10 years. The brain is complex beyond comprehension.
I don't like it when people predict human intelligence in machines in the forseeable future because it just makes us AI people look bad ;) - DigiDave, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2For some more comments and photos

But the Wired story has a more complete vision of the conference.

That doesn't say much for their collision-avoidance AI, does it?
First rule of Robots: Keep the @#$%! out of my way. Even cats can figure that much out, after you step on their tails a few times they get the idea. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Factual content on the net? I must be using the wrong Internet :P

... Damned exciting. I'm just waiting until I can communicate with the AI directly. It can be like a very skilled, and informative version of "Dear Abby." - bedlam17, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You should look at the following video of Honda's ASIMO.

I have more of my background in experimental psychology, and it's funny how AI people and cog.sci people relate to the idea of true "thinking machines". Each side tends to view the one they don't work with as the oddball, and the one they do as overly mundane. - rm999, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"faster processors != more intelegent programs"
I disagree
"AI is still "stupid".. and will be for some time"
I agree. - bedlam17, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Ray Kurzweil says fast enough processors will allow for human brain simulation. IBM is working on a related project on a supercomputer, a Blue Gene.
- STDOUBT, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2"AI is 50 this summer...."
Please don't say silly stuff like that. True AI has not been
realized, and there are those among us who contend that
it may never be.
AI *research* may be 50 this summer, but *real* AI has yet to exist. - bedlam17, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0But we're finally getting processors near where they need to be. The field has only been in existence for 50 years.
